  • Recently, a study is conducting to image collection and auto detection of attribute information using mobile mapping system. The road sign attribute information detection is difficult because of various size and placement, interference of other facilities like trees. In this study, a text detection method that does not rely on a Korean character template is required to successfully detect the target text when a variety of differently sized texts are present near the target texts. To overcome this, the method of incremental right-to-left blob projection (IRBP) was suggested as a solution; the potential and improvement of the method was also assessed. To assess the performance improvement of the IRBP that was developed, the IRBP method was compared to the existing method that uses Korean templates through the 60 videos of street signs that were used. It was verified that text detection can be improved with the IRBP method.

  • The automatic traffic sign detection and recognition has been one of the highly researched and an important component of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). They are designed especially to warn the drivers of imminent dangers such as sharp curves, under construction zone, etc. This paper presents a traffic sign recognition (TSR) system using morphological operations and multiple descriptors. The TSR system is realized in three stages: segmentation, shape classification and recognition stage. The system is designed to attain maximum accuracy at the segmentation stage with the inclusion of morphological operations and boost the computation time at the shape classification stage using MB-LBP descriptor. The proposed system is tested on the German traffic sign recognition benchmark (GTSRB) and on Korean traffic sign dataset.

  • Traffic sign recognition plays an important role in solving traffic-related problems. Traffic sign recognition and classification systems are key components for traffic safety, traffic monitoring, autonomous driving services, and autonomous vehicles. A lightweight model, applicable to portable devices, is an essential aspect of the design agenda. We suggest a lightweight convolutional neural network model with residual blocks for traffic sign recognition systems. The proposed model shows very competitive results on publicly available benchmark data.

  • Deaf people who use sign language as their first language sometimes have difficulty communicating because they do not know spoken Korean. Deaf people are also members of society, so we must support to create a society where everyone can live together. In this paper, we present a method to increase the recognition rate of Korean sign language using a CNN model. When the original image was used as input to the CNN model, the accuracy was 0.96, and when the image corresponding to the skin area in the YCbCr color space was used as input, the accuracy was 0.72. It was confirmed that inserting the original image itself would lead to better results. In other studies, the accuracy of the combined Conv1d and LSTM model was 0.92, and the accuracy of the AlexNet model was 0.92. The CNN model proposed in this paper is 0.96 and is proven to be helpful in recognizing Korean sign language.

  • For sign languages are main communication means among hearing-impaired people, there are communication difficulties between speaking-oriented people and sign-language-oriented people. Automated sign-language recognition may resolve these communication problems. In sign languages, finger spelling is used to spell names and words that are not listed in the dictionary. There have been research activities for gesture and posture recognition using glove-based devices. However, these devices are often expensive, cumbersome, and inadequate for recognizing elaborate finger spelling. Use of colored patches or gloves also cause uneasiness. In this paper, a vision-based finger spelling recognition system is introduced. In our method, captured hand region images were separated from the background using a skin detection algorithm assuming that there are no skin-colored objects in the background. Then, hand postures were recognized using a two-dimensional grid analysis method. Our recognition system is not sensitive to the size or the rotation of the input posture images. By optimizing the weights of the posture features using a genetic algorithm, our system achieved high accuracy that matches other systems using devices or colored gloves. We applied our posture recognition system for detecting Korean Sign Language, achieving better than $93\%$ accuracy.

  • Sign language spotting is the task of detecting and recognizing the signs in a signed utterance. The difficulty of sign language spotting is that the occurrences of signs vary in both motion and shape. Moreover, the signs appear within a continuous gesture stream, interspersed with transitional movements between signs in a vocabulary and non-sign patterns(which include out-of-vocabulary signs, epentheses, and other movements that do not correspond to signs). In this paper, a novel method for designing a threshold model in a conditional random field(CRF) model is proposed. The proposed model performs an adaptive threshold for distinguishing between signs in the vocabulary and non-sign patterns. A hand appearance-based sign verification method, a short-sign detector, and a subsign reasoning method are included to further improve sign language spotting accuracy. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect signs from continuous data with an 88% spotting rate and can recognize signs from isolated data with a 94% recognition rate, versus 74% and 90% respectively for CRFs without a threshold model, short-sign detector, subsign reasoning, and hand appearance-based sign verification.

  • In the research for driver assistance systems, traffic sign information to the driver must be a very important information. Therefore, the detection system of traffic signs located on the road should be able to handel real-time. To detect the traffic signs, color and shape of traffic signs is to use the information after images obtained using the CCD camera. In the road environment, however, using color information to detect traffic sings will cause many problems due to changes of weather and environmental factors. In this paper, to solve it, the candidate traffic sign regions are detected from road images obtained in a variety of the illumination changes using the HSI eign-color model. And then, using the invariant moment-based SVM classifier to detect traffic signs are proposed. Experimental results show that, traffic sign detection rate is 91%, and the processing time per frame is 0.38sec. Proposed method is useful for real-time intelligent traffic guidance systems can be applied.

  • For future autonomous cars, it is necessary to recognize various surrounding environments such as lanes, traffic lights, and vehicles. This paper presents a method of speed sign recognition from a single image in automatic driving assistance systems. The detection step with the proposed method emphasizes the color attributes in modified YUV color space because speed sign area is affected by color. The proposed method is further improved by extracting the digits from the highlighted circle region. A sequential cascade AdaBoost classifier is then used in the recognition step for real-time processing. Experimental results show the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to that of conventional algorithms for various speed signs and real-world conditions.

  • This paper proposes an enhanced scheme adding a sign detector at the front of the correlator in STDR (sequence time domain reflectometry) system. We have executed simulations to show the improvement of detection performance in two fault types and various fault locations. Consequently, it can be shown that the proposed scheme improves the detection performance of the location of far-fault without increasing the computational complexity.

  • The traffic sign on the road should be easy to distinguishable even from far, and should be recognized in a short time. As traffic sign is a very important object which provides important information for the drivers to enhance safety, it has to attract human's attention among any other objects on the road. This paper proposes a new method of detecting the area of traffic sign, which uses attention module on the assumption that we attention our gaze on the traffic sign at first among other objects when we drive a car. In this paper, we analyze the previous studies of psycophysical and physiological results to get what kind of features are used in the process of human's object recognition, especially color processing, and with these results we detected the area of traffic sign. Various kinds of traffic sign images were tested, and the results showed good quality(average 97.8% success).
