Antimicrobial actions of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) derived from products of NADPH oxidase and inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase in host phagocytes inactivate various bacterial macromolecules. To cope with these cytotoxic radicals, pathogenic bacteria have evolved to conserve systems necessary for detoxifying ROS/RNS and repairing damages caused by their actions. In response to these stresses, bacteria also induce expression of molecular chaperones to aid in ameliorating protein misfolding. In this study, we explored the function of a newly identified chaperone Spy, that is localized exclusively in the periplasm when bacteria exposed to conditions causing spheroplast formation, in the resistance of Salmonella Typhimurium to ROS/RNS. A spy deletion mutant was constructed in S. Typhimurium by a PCR-mediated method of one-step gene inactivation with ${\lambda}$ Red recombinase, and subjected to ROS/RNS stresses. The spy mutant Salmonella showed a modest decrease in growth rate in NO-producing cultures, and no detectable difference of growth rate in $H_2O_2$ containing cultures, compared with that of wild type Salmonella. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that spy mRNA levels were similar regardless of both stresses, but were increased considerably in Salmonella mutants lacking the flavohemoglobin Hmp, which are incapable of NO detoxification, and lacking an alternative sigma factor RpoS, conferring hypersusceptibility to $H_2O_2$. Results demonstrate that Spy expression can be induced under extreme conditions of both stresses, and suggest that the protein may have supportive roles in maintaining proteostasis in the periplasm where various chaperones may act in concert with Spy, thereby protecting bacteria against toxicities of ROS/RNS.

Electro-mechanical actuator installed on aircraft consists of a decelerator which magnifies the torque in order to rotate an axis connected with aircraft control surface, a control section which controls the motor assembly through receiving orders from cockpit and a motor assembly which rotates the decelerator. Electro-mechanical actuator controls aircraft altitude, position, landing, takeoff, etc. It is an important part of a aircraft. Aircraft maneuvering causes vibrations to electro-mechanical actuator. Vibrations may result in structural fatigue. For that reason, it is necessary to analyze the system structural safety. In order to analyze the system structural safety. It is needed reasonable finite element model and structural response stress closed to real value. In this paper, analytic model is derived by using the simplified finite element model, and damping ratio which is closely related to response stress is derived by using modal test. So, we developed analytic model in less than 10 % error rate, compared with modal test. Vibration response stress close to real value was estimated from analytic model modified with modal experimental damping ratio. Estimation method for damping ratio with empirical formula was suggested partly. Finally, It was proved that electro-mechanical actuator had reasonable structure margin of safety at environmental random $3{\sigma}$ stress during life cycle.

The discovery of dark energy from Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) is based on the implicit assumption that the look-back time evolution of SN Ia luminosity, after light-curve corrections, would be negligible. A strong support for this assumption was the apparent insensitivity of SN Ia distances across the host galaxy morphologies. However, Hicken et al. 2009 (H09) shows a systematic difference in the Hubble residual (HR) of $0.144{\pm}0.070$ mag between the E-S0 and Scd/Sd/Irr galaxies, after light-curve corrections. If true, this indicates that the light-curve fitters used by the SN Ia community can not correct for the population age (and therefore the evolution) effect. In order to confirm this, we have combined nearby SN Ia samples and the first-year SDSS-II SN Survey. The SNANA package was used for analyzing SN Ia light-curve, both for the MLCS2k2 and SALT2 fitters. We find a systematic difference in the HR of $0.10-0.13{\pm}0.030$ mag between E-S0 and Scd/Sd/Irr galaxies, which is in agreement with the result of H09, but now at the 3-5 ${\sigma}$ level. Considering the significant difference in the mean age of stellar population between these morphological types, the difference in the HR reported here suggests that the evolution effect of SN Ia luminosity should be considered in the cosmological application of SN Ia data.

The buckling assessment of plate panels described in common structural rules (CSR) is to be determined according to the buckling utilization factor with hull girder stresses calculated on net hull girder sectional properties. As the thickness requirement for the buckling assessment of plate panels is not explicitly given in CSR, a lot of time is spent to find the proper thickness of plate panels until reaching to an allowable buckling utilization factor. In this study, in order to reduce time and cost, the thickness requirement of plate panels satisfying buckling assessment was derived. The structural design system included with the thickness requirement for buckling assessment was developed. The system is called as Oil-tanker Automated Structural Investigation System (OASIS). The design result of longitudinal strength members using OASIS was verified by Nauticus Hull which is the rule scantling software of DNV. Finally, optimum design of a double hull tanker for the minimum weight using OASIS was presented.

We present GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies (~26 per cent) show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these (~15 per cent) show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. These are objects with either exceptionally intense and localised NUV fluxes or blue UV-optical colours throughout. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular Hbeta absorption higher than expected for a quiescent population and a higher CO detection rate. This suggests that residual star formation is more common in early-type galaxies than we are used to believe. NUV-blue galaxies are generally drawn from the lower stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_e <200 km/s) and thus lower dynamical mass part of the sample. We have also constructed the first UV Fundamental Planes and show that NUV blue galaxies bias the slopes and increase the scatters. If they are eliminated the fits get closer to expectations from the virial theorem. Although our analysis is based on a limited sample, it seems that a dominant fraction of the tilt and scatter of the UV Fundamental Planes is due to the presence of young stars in preferentially low-mass early-type galaxies.

The effect of specimen geometry on the bending and tensile strengths of dissimilar joints ($\beta-Si_3N_4/S45C$) with copper interlayers was evaluated. The average bending strength of specimens with circular cross sections was higher than that of specimens with rectangular cross sections. The crack initiation stress ($\sigma_i$) was successfully determined by the acoustic emission (AE) method and was approximately 60~80% of the bending strength. The residual stresses near the interfaces on the ceramic side were measured by X-ray diffraction before conducting the bending test. The bending strength and the crack initiation stress decreased with an increase in the residual stresses. The effect of the bending strain component was evaluated by the tensile testing; the tensile strength decreased with an increase in the bending strain component and was approximately 80% of the bending strength.
The galactic magnetic field (GMF) and the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) affect the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) from the source to us. Here we examine the influences of the GMF/IGFM and the dependence of their sky distribution on galactic latitude, b. We analyze the correlation between the arrival direction (AD) of UHECRs observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the large-scale structure of the universe in regions of sky divided by b. Specifically, we compare the AD distribution of observed UHECRs to that of mock UHECRs generated from a source model constructed with active galactic nuclei. Our source model has the smearing angle as a free parameter that reflects the deflection angle of UHECRs from the source. The results show that larger smearing angles are required for the observed distribution of UHECRs in lower galactic latitude regions. We obtain, for instance, a $1{\sigma}$ credible interval for smearing angle of $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}_s{\leq}72^{\circ}$ at high galactic latitudes, $60^{\circ}$ < $\left|{b}\right|{\leq}90^{\circ}$, and of $75^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}_s{\leq}180^{\circ}$, $-30^{\circ}{\leq}b{\leq}30^{\circ}$, at low galactic latitudes, respectively. The results show that the influence of the GMF is stronger than that of the IGMF. In addition, we can estimate the strength of GMFs by these values; if we assume that UHECRs would have heavier nuclei, the estimated strengths of GMF are consistent with the observational value of a few ${\mu}G$. More data from the future experiments may make UHECR astronomy possible.

If we use the microwave of SAR, we can observe ocean in spite of severe weather or night time. The sea surface image of SAR has numerous information about atmospheric phenomena related to surface wind field. The extracted wind information from SAR can be used diversely. In order to extract sea wind speed from SAR image, a generated wind direction from SAR and sigma nought should be input into wind model. Therefore, wind speed can be obtained by input wind direction into CMOD5 Model. Azimuth angle using CMOD5 Model is generated by added $90^{\circ}$ to Look angle which is extracted from SAR data file. A gained wind direction spectrum from SAR image has $180^{\circ}$ ambiguity because of 2D-FFT. This ambiguity should decide to use the location of land, wind direction in field or the result of numerical model. Consequently, wind direction using 2D-FFT is $3^{\circ}{\sim}7^{\circ}$ differences with actual surveying data. Wind speed by CMOD5 model is similar to actual surveying data as below 2m/s.

The aim of this study was to analyze high temperature deformation stability and properties of duplex stainless steels(DSS) according to annealing temperature. In order to analyze high temperature deformation stability, a number of compression tests were carried out with a stain rate of $10^{-2}s^{-1}{\sim}10s^{-1}$ up to a compression ratio of 50% in a temperature range of $950^{\circ}C-1300^{\circ}C$. The analysis of high temperature deformation stability of DSS was performed based on the Ziegler model. In order to analyze the high temperature properties of DSS, annealing treatments were conducted by isothermal holding for 1 hr at $950^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$ with $50^{\circ}C$ intervals followed by water cooling. The hardness and tensile tests were performed on specimens with different volume fractions of constituent phases, such as austenite, ferrite and sigma. The hardness and tensile strength of 2507 according to the annealing temperature are better than those of 2205. The strain rate sensitivity and Ziegler parameter are higher in 2205 than in 2507 as a whole, which implies that 2205 is better than 2507 in terms of forgeability at high temperature.
In the present study, we investigated the overexpression and characterization of bovine pancreatic (bp)- DNase I in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia pastoris. The bp-DNase I gene was fused in frame with the GAL10 promoter, $MF{\alpha}$, and GAL7 terminator sequences, resulting in the plasmid, pGAL-$MF{\alpha}$-DNaseI (6.4 kb). Also, the bp-DNase I gene was fused in frame with the AOX1 promoter, $MF{\alpha}$, and AOX1 terminator sequences, resulting in the plasmid, pPEXI (8.8 kb). The recombinant plasmids, pGAL-$MF{\alpha}$-DNaseI and pPEXI were introduced into S. cerevisiae and P. pastoris host cells, respectively. When the transformed yeast cells were cultured at $30^{\circ}C$ for 48 h in galactose or methanol medium, bp-DNase I was overexpressed and the most of activity was found in the extracellular fraction. P. pastoris transformant activity showed 45.5 unit/mL in the culture medium at 48 h cultivation, whereas S. cerevisiae transformant revealed 37.7 unit/mL in the extracellular fraction at 48 h cultivation. The enzymatic characteristics, such as DNA cleavage and half life were investigated. Treatment of the recombinant DNase I from P. pastoris induced degradation of the calf thymus DNA within 1 minute, and this DNA degradation rate was higher than that of commercial bp-DNase I (SIGMA) and the recombinant DNase I from S. cerevisiae.
