  • This study was deal with blow-out and buoyancy stability evaluation method for slurry shield TBM. When applying a slurry shield TBM for the construction of a shallow tunnel under river or sea, the stability of slurry blow-out and segment lining buoyancy should be evaluated. However, there is a problem in that the currently applied theoretical formula is somewhat complicated, making it inconvenient to calculate in practice. In this study, some simple charts were proposed to easily evaluate the stability of slurry blow-out and segment lining buoyancy. In addition, the buoyancy safety factor of segment lining using the strength reduction method was evaluated and compared with the buoyancy safety factor based on the theoretical formula. The buoyancy safety factor by the theoretical formula was evaluated to be rather small, and it was confirmed that it was on the safe side. The simplified charts for the evaluation of slurry blow-out and buoyancy stability presented in this study are expected to be usefully utilized in the planning and design of undersea tunnels.

  • This paper contains experimental study for the development and performance of TBM backfill material with thixotropic properties. The LW backfill material is widely applied to fill the cavity on the back side of the shield TBM excavation, but has disadvantages such as settlement caused by strength reduction, material separation by groundwater, and reduced plasticity. In this paper, laboratory tests and a model test were conducted to assess the performance of inorganic thixotropic backfill material proposed to improve these problems. The results of laboratory tests show that 1 hr-uniaxial compressive strength of ITB was 12 times higher than LW, and the rate of bleeding of 20 hr was 8.3 times lower, and the result of flow table test was more than 27 times higher. This result indicated that the inorganic thixotropic backfill material has superior properties to LW backfill in terms of strength reduction, material separation, and thixotropy. In the model experiment, a model injection device tester was manufactured and the injection performance and filling rate were verified. When material was injected in the water, it was visually checked whether material separation occurred, and it was confirmed that the filling rate was 96% or more. Comparison results with the test of LW and ITB materials was concluded that ITB can reduce the material separation by groundwater and the occurrence of tunnel cavity.

  • This paper describes on the distribution of the vibration and the noise produced on a skipjack pole and line training ship M/S Pusan 403 (243GT, 1,000ps) under the cruising or drifting condition. The vibration and the noise level were measured by use of protable vibration analyzer (B and K 3513) and sound level meter (B and K 2205), and so the vibration level was converted into dB unit. The check points were set through every decks and around important places of the ship. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The vibration and the noise level 1) On the main deck, both the vibration and the noise level were highest at the vertically above the main engine, whereas the vibration level was the lowest in the bow store and the noise level beneath the bridge. 2) Under cruising condition, the vibration level around the cylinder head of main engine, port side of the engine room, on the shaft tunnel was 80, 67, 65 dB and the noise level 104, 87, 86 dB, respectively. 3) The vibration level on the vertical line passing through the bridge was the highest at the orlop deck with 60 dB and the lowest on the bridge deck with 55 dB, whereas the noise level the highest at the compass deck with 75 dB and the lowest at the orlop deck with 53 dB. 4) The vibration and the noise level on the open decks were the highest with 65 dB and 84 dB on the boat deck, whereas the vibration level was the lowest at the lecture room with 51 dB and the noise level the lowest at the fore castle deck with 57 dB. 5) On the orlop decks, both the vibration and the noise level were the highest at the engine room with 65 dB and 85 dB, and the lowest at bow store with 54 dB and 52 dB, respectively. Comparing with the vibration level and the noise level, the vibration level was higher than the noise level in the bow part and it was contrary in the stern part of the ship. 2. Vibration analysis 1) The vibration displacement and the vibration velocity were the greatest at the cylinder head of main engine with 100μm and 11mm/sec, and were the smallest at the compass deck with 3μm and 0.07mm/sec. They were also attenuated rapidly around the frequency of 100Hz and over. 2) The vibration acceleration was the greatest at the cylinder head with the main frequency of 1KHz and the acceleration of 1.1mm/sec super(2), and the smallest at the compass deck with 30KHz and 0.05mm/sec super(2).

  • Purpose : The majority of PCL deficient knees have some intact remnant PCL bundles. In these cases, the remnant PCL bundles were removed fur easy passage of graft(especially in bone-patellar tendon-bone graft). The purpose of study is to report the results of PCL reconstruction by posterior transseptal portal technique and by preserving the remnant posterior cruciate ligament bundles. Materials & Methods : From November 1993 to June 1999, 44 arthroscopic posterior cruciate ligament reconstructions have been performed by one surgeon. We studied 37 knees those were followed up over 1 year among them. The mean age($14\~56$ years) was 31.8 years. The average follow-up period was 17.8 months($12\~61$ months). The graft materials were 29 double-loop hamstring autografts, 4 double-loop hamstring allografts and 4 Achilles tendon-bone allograft. Results : There are significant improvement of the preoperative subjective symptoms. The last follow-up shows that the average Lysholm knee score was markedly improved from 59.8 pre-operation to 89.2 post-operation and the average KT 2000 side difference was decreased from 11.1mm pre-operation to 2.3 mm post-operation. Follow-up MRI showed that the graft was healed with remnant posterior cruciate ligament bundles as one ligament. Conclusion : The posterior trans-septal portal makes it possible to locate the exact tibial tunnel. The arthroscopic PCL reconstruction preserving the remnant of original PCL bundles seems to provide the good result.
