A Study on the Design and Measurement of Pin Press-Fit Device for Fastening Differential Gear Case and Pinion Shaft (Differential gear case와 피니언 샤프트 체결을 위한 핀 압입 장치설계 및 측정에 관한 연구)

  • The differential gear system is a device designed to distribute the driving force of both vehicle wheels and control the rotational speed when the vehicle turns on a curve. The differential device consists of a differential gear case, a ring gear, and a pressure ring. A differential pinion gear and side gear are mounted on the differential pinion shaft inside the differential gear case. In this study, a pin press-fitting device that mounts the pinier gear and side gear to the differential pinion shaft in the differential gear case was designed, and a jig device for pin press-fitting using servo press was developed. In addition, by precisely measuring the pin press-in load and press-in distance according to the pin hole diameter of the differential gear shaft, the optimization of the pin pressin process was established.

  • The hydraulic LSD which uses the principle of gear pump is packed with viscous oil in tight container. When a slip occurs on one wheel, the hydraulic LSD generates torque caused by high oil pressure in the container. In this study, two dimensional(2-D) side pinion gear model was developed for hydraulic LSD. Using that model the flow analysis was conducted to preestimate pressure distributions of the side pinion gear according to the variations in the design factors such as oil viscosity, gear gap and rpm. Then, applying the obtained pressure distributions on the side pinion gear, finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate the torque characteristics. From the analysis results, the torque characteristics according to the design factor variations were evaluated.

  • A vehicle's differential gear is a device designed to allow the vehicle's outer wheels to turn faster than the inner wheels when turning on a curve. The differential gear case is the main component of the differential gear system, which is composed of ring gear, pinion gear and side gear, and is fastened by pinion shaft pins. The differential gear case rotates when the vehicle is running, so balancing calibration is very important. In this study, a balancing machine that can diagnose and correct the differential gear case and mass imbalance of various rotating bodies was designed. The differential gear case was rotated at high speed to accurately diagnose the location and value of the unbalanced mass, and it was designed to be balanced and corrected by removing the unbalanced mass by drilling. After calibration, it was confirmed that the unbalanced value of all the measured samples was reduced to less than 180g.mm, and the unbalance reduction ratio was improved to 60~70%.

  • This study present a direct steering system using rack and pinion for ultra-small vehicles. The traditional small vehicles for special use had the limitation of space by reason of short wheel tread. These vehicles has adopted a indirect steering system or a center arm system for steering. The disadvantages of these system were deterioration of gear efficiency and increase of parts. For direct-linkage to both knuckles, steering system is made up of out-side tie rods, tie-rod ends, and gear box. Thus, the proposed system has a minimum number of parts. The experimental results show a maximum efficiency at minimum steering angle and a minimum clearance circle. These effects were accomplished by adopting a Ackerman-Jantaud theory.

  • Generally, a working excavator has only one directional bucket tilting angle, which is up-forward. However, side direction rotation of the bucket would allow variety of working output. We designed a hydraulic rotary actuator comprising a double rod hydraulic cylinder with a rack-pinion gear set for use in excavator bucket with side tilting mechanism, thus converting the linear to angular motion. The proposed side tilting rotary actuator was designed with parts suitable for medium size of heavy duty excavator. These mechanical parts were inexpensive to purchase and the manufacturing cost was reasonable. The proposed mechanism is potentially useful for excavator with variety of working output.

Failure Examples Study for Tribological Characteristics of Drive Shaft and Axle System in Vehicles (자동차 드라이브 샤프트와 액슬 시스템의 트라이볼로지적인 특성에 관한 고장사례 고찰)

  • This study examined the tribological characteristics of the drive shaft and axle system in vehicles. The first drive shaft example contained end play for a CV joint that transferred part of the transmission power to the wheel. The joint part of the drive shaft was deformed because of reduced durability due to wear. Thus, vibrations caused the body to shake and become unbalanced when the drive shaft transferred the power. The second example was the cross-section of a shaft that connected the slip-connection of the propeller shaft on the input side to the yoke flange of the output side; the durability was reduced because of corrosion. End play caused by wear between the bearing and cross-section shaft appeared to cause shaking. In the third example, a grease leak reduced lubrication and thus caused damage to the hub bearing and inside the knuckle. The failure was produced by sticking. The fourth example had noise produced by the gear and gear transfer. This was due to the backlash of the pinion and few ring gears for the differential gear. Therefore, drive shaft and axle systems must be thoroughly checked and managed to minimize and reduce failure phenomena.

  • The limited slip differential(LSD) is a device which enables the driving force to be transmitted from one slipping wheel to another wheel in such case that the car is stuck in clay or snow. When the unwanted slipping occurs on one wheel, the LSD temporarily restraints the differential motion to transmit the driving force in the other wheel. So far, many types of LSD were developed such as mechanical lock type, disk clutch type, viscous coupling type, torsion type and multiple clutch type. However these types of LSD is too complicated and expensive, so it is used only for 4WD outdoor vehicles, military vehicles, and a portion of deluxe car. So, many studies has been devoted to improve new types of LSD to cover those demerits of existing LSDs that the hydraulic LSD is developed as arepresentative result of that. When a slip occurs on one wheel, the hydraulic LSD generates torque caused by high oil pressure in the container. This study has been devoted to suggest an improved hydraulic LSD. In order to achieve it, we designed a new type of hydraulic LSD, produced it and did a rig test with it on real vehicle. From the rig test, it has been confirmed that the new type of hydraulic LSD can be directly applied to exiting vehicles without changing the design criteria

Prototype Parallel Gripper Mechanism Equipped with Assisting Grippers for Small Object Grasping and Experimental Validation (소형 물체 파지를 위해 보조 그리퍼가 장착된 프로토 타입 평행 그리퍼 메커니즘 및 실험적 검증)

  • The ability of the robot gripper to handle a wide range of objects significantly impacts its operational effectiveness. Among the robot grippers commonly used, the economically feasible choice is the relatively simple structure of a parallel gripper. To perform more densely packed tasks with a parallel gripper, it should be capable of handling small objects. Therefore, this study designs a parallel gripper mechanism equipped with assisting grippers to ensure smooth grasping of small objects. The parallel gripper is designed using a rack and pinion gear system, with two additional grippers on both side, and these assisting grippers are designed to be detachable. The two assisting grippers have different type of tip to grasp thin fabric shapes and thin stick shapes. The gripper prototype is used to verify the grasping capabilities for shapes achievable with a conventional parallel gripper and those intended for grasping with the assisting grippers through grasping experiments. Consequently, by equipping a conventional parallel gripper with assisting grippers as in this study, it becomes capable of handling a broader range of objects, in addition to its existing functionality.
