태평양 북극 결빙 해역 내 유색 용존 유기물 CDOM 분포에 따른 태양광 투과 비교 (Transmission of Solar Light according the Relative CDOM Concentration of the Sea-ice-covered Pacific Arctic Ocean)

  • The transmission of solar light according to the distribution of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) was measured in the Pacific Arctic Ocean. The Research Vessel Araon visited the ice-covered East Siberian and Chukchi Seas in August 2016. In the Arctic, solar [ultraviolet-A (UV-A), ultraviolet-B (UV-B), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR)] radiation reaching the surface of the ocean is primarily protected by the distribution of sea ice. The transmission of solar light in the ocean is controlled by sea ice and dissolved organic matter, such as CDOM. The concentration of CDOM is the major factor controlling the penetration depth of UV radiation into the ocean. The relative CDOM concentration of surface sea water was higher in the East Siberian Sea than in the Chukchi Sea. Due to the distribution of CDOM, the penetration depth of solar light in the East Siberian Sea (UV-B, $9{\pm}2m$; UV-A, $13{\pm}2m$; PAR, $36{\pm}4m$) was lower than in the Chukchi Sea (UV-B, $15{\pm}3m$; UV-A, $22{\pm}3m$; PAR, $49{\pm}3m$). Accelerated global warming and the rapid decrease of sea ice in the Arctic have resulted in marine organisms being exposed to increased harmful UV radiation. With changes in sea ice covered areas and concentrations of dissolved organic matter in the Arctic Ocean, marine ecosystems that consist of a variety of species from primary producers to high-trophic-level organisms will be directly or indirectly affected by solar UV radiation.

Distribution and habitat use of the endangered Siberian flying squirrel Pteromys volans (Rodentia: Sciuridae)

  • Background: Understanding the habitat characteristics of the endangered Siberian flying squirrel Pteromys volans is the first step in conserving and managing the forests it requires for nesting, gliding, and feeding. Therefore, in the present study, we characterized the habitats of P. volans using GIS analysis of 411 forest sites in South Korea where fecal droppings were found. Results: Fecal signs of P. volans were found in various regions in South Korea, including the Baekdudaegan Mountains. GIS analysis with six environmental layers (vegetation type, wood-age class, diameter at breast height [DBH], crown density, elevation, and distance from stream) revealed that fecal signs of P. volans were more frequently found in broad-leaved deciduous forests (42%) located 200-399 m above sea level (43.1%) and 0-199 m from the nearest stream (53%), with 5th class wood-age (35.3%), middle size class DBH (51.1%), and high crown density (71%). Conclusions: The present study provides information on the biotic and abiotic characteristics of P. volans habitats. In South Korea, the fecal droppings of P. volans were found predominantly old deciduous broadleaf forests. Further studies are needed to reveal whether the more frequent occurrence of P. volans dropping in broadleaf forests may be due to a particular preference of this species for the forests or to a simple reflection of the area of the broadleaf forests occupying a much larger area than other forest types in Korea.

Characteristics of Weather and Climate over the Okhotsk Sea

  • The Okhotsk Sea is unique natural object with climatic peculiarities. The climate of the Okhotsk Sea results from the general distribution of solar radiation during a year, and the characteristics of the atmospheric circulation that varies through a year: In cold half year the main pressure formations are Siberian high and Aleutian low. Asian low centered on Afghanistan dominates over the Asian continent in summer. The North-Pacific sea surface is under effect of permanent North Pacific high. The changes in their position from year to year are very significant. The anticyclonic activity over the Far Eastern Seas is one of the main factors for the formation of weather anomalies over the adjacent territories. The analysis of summer weather characteristics over the coast of Okhotsk and East Sea using the data obtained from Hydrometeorological stations during $1949\~1990$ showed that, to a great extent, distribution of the air temperature depends on thermal state of the Okhotsk Sea and atmospheric circulation over it. We show some relations between weather characteristics and the intensity of atmospheric action center for the North Pacific high in summer when its ridge propagates to Okhotsk Sea. Correlation coefficients between air pressure over the Okhotsk Sea and air temperature for the coastal areas reach up to 0.7. Analysis of the spatial-temporal distribution of main meteorological values over the Okhotsk Sea such as air pressure, and air temperature are also performed.

우리나라 겨울철 극한저온현상 발생 시 종관 기후 패턴 (Synoptic Climatic Patterns for Winter Extreme Low Temperature Events in the Republic of Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 지난 40년 동안(1973~2012)의 우리나라 기상청 산하 61개 지점 일기온 자료와 NCEP/NCAR 재분석 자료를 바탕으로 우리나라 지역별 겨울철 극한저온현상 발생 시 동아시아 영역의 종관 기후 패턴의 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 일최고기온과 일최저기온 하위 10 퍼센타일 기준으로 정의된 겨울철 극한저온현상은 주로 겨울철 전반기(12월 초순~1월 중순)에 2~7일 간격으로 우리나라 전역 또는 주요 산맥 기준 동서지역으로 구분되어 발생함을 알 수 있다. 해수면기압과 바람벡터 등의 지상 종관 자료 합성장 분석에 따르면 총 13개로 구분되는 우리나라 겨울철 극한저온현상 발생 공간 패턴은 산맥뿐만 아니라 시베리아 고기압과 알류샨 저기압의 상대적인 확장 범위와 강도와 밀접한 관련성이 있음을 알 수 있다. 대류권 중층(500 hPa) 종관기후도 분석에 따르면, 블러킹 형태의 저기압이 상층 찬 공기를 고위도 지역에서 한반도로 이류시킬 때 우리나라에 겨울철 극한저온현상이 발생하기에 적합한 조건이 형성됨을 알 수 있다. 이러한 결과들은 지역규모 이상의 동아시아 겨울철 극한저온현상 예보를 향상시키기 위해 시베리아 고기압, 알류샨 저기압, 상층 블러킹 등의 종관 기후 요소를 모니터링하는 것이 중요함을 가리킨다.

Tree Species Preferred as Fecal Sites by the Siberian Flying Squirrel Pteromys volans

  • Fecal sites of the Siberian flying squirrel Pteromys volans were found in the 16 tree species, and 11 species (46.4%) of them were used as fecal sites in winter and only 3 tree species (5.6%) were used for their fecal dropping in summer. In winter and spring, 11 and 10 tree species were used as fecal sites, respectively, indicating that various species of trees are used in those seasons for food sources or resting sites of the flying squirrels. Of total 16 species, the flying squirrels' fecal sites were most frequently found in Quercus mongolica (46.4%) and then followed by Prunus sargentii (25.6%). In winter, Prunus sargentii was preferred more than Quercus mongolica, although trees of Prunus sargentii are less distributed compared with those of various trees of the genus Quercus. In summer and autumn, high productivity of trees makes the flying squirrels use only one or two species they prefer. In winter and spring, however, they should extend their food source to various tree species because of low productivity and less food sources.

Verification of drag-reduction capabilities of stiff compliant coatings in air flow at moderate speeds

  • Skin frictional drag reduction efficiency of "stiff" compliant coating was investigated in a wind tunnel experiment. Flat plate compliant coating inserts were installed in a wind tunnel and the measurements of skin frictional drag and velocity field were carried out. The compliant coatings with varying viscoelastic properties had been prepared using different composition. In order to optimize the coating thickness, the most important design parameter, the dynamic viscoelastic properties had been determined experimentally. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) during half a year was documented as well. A design procedure proposed by Kulik et al. (2008) was applied to get an optimal value for the coating thickness. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coatings. The compliant coatings with the thickness h = 7mm achieved 4~5% drag reduction within a velocity range 30~40 m/s. The drag reduction mechanism of the attenuation of turbulence velocity fluctuations due to the compliant coating was demonstrated. It is envisioned that larger drag reduction effect is obtainable at higher flow velocities for high speed trains and subsonic aircrafts.

Maintaining the close-to-critical state of thorium fuel core of hybrid reactor operated under control by D-T fusion neutron flux

  • The results of full-scale numerical experiments of a hybrid thorium-containing fuel cell facility operating in a close-to-critical state due to a controlled source of fusion neutrons are discussed in this work. The facility under study was a complex consisting of two blocks. The first block was based on the concept of a high-temperature gas-cooled thorium reactor core. The second block was an axially symmetrical extended plasma generator of additional neutrons that was placed in the near-axial zone of the facility blanket. The calculated models of the blanket and the plasma generator of D-T neutrons created within the work allowed for research of the neutronic parameters of the facility in stationary and pulse-periodic operation modes. This research will make it possible to construct a safe facility and investigate the properties of thorium fuel, which can be continuously used in the epithermal spectrum of the considered hybrid fusion-fission reactor.

동시베리아해 비구형 망가니즈단괴의 특성 (Characteristics of Non-Spherical Manganese Nodule from the East Siberian Sea)

  • 유라시아 대륙 주변부 북극해의 천해에서도 태평양이나 인도양의 심해저에서와 같이 많은 망가니즈단괴가 발견되고 있지만, 이에 관한 자세한 연구는 많이 수행되고 있지 않다. 아라온호의 북극해 탐사를 통하여 동시베리아해에서 채취한 망가니즈단괴는 Mn/Fe 비가 매우 높아 Mn 자원으로서의 가능성이 매우 크다. 이번 연구에서는 북극 동시베리아해에서 산출되는 망가니즈단괴 중 약 7%를 차지하는 비구형 단괴를 외부형태에 따라 구분하고, 크기와 무게, 내부조직을 관찰하였으며, X선회절분석 그래프의 피크 면적비를 이용한 산화망가니즈광물의 반정량 분석과 지화학분석을 실시하여, 그 결과를 구형 단괴와 비교하였다. 비구형 망가니즈단괴는 외부형태에 따라 5가지로 구분되며, 타원체형, 판상형과 불규칙형이 대부분을 차지하며, 장경과 무게는 비례하는 경향이 있다. 비구형 단괴는 모두 핵을 가지며, 핵 성분은 이질 퇴적물이 주를 이룬다. 산화망 가니즈광물의 평균 함량은 버네사이트, 부서라이트, 토도로카이트 순으로 감소하며, 함량비는 외부형태, 내부조직이나 핵 성분과는 상관관계가 없지만, 단괴의 내부에서 외부로 갈수록 토도로카이트와 부서라이트는 감소하고, 버네사이트가 증가하는 경향이 있다. 북극해의 다른 천해는 물론 태평양이나 인도양의 심해저의 단괴에 비하여 Mn 함량이 많고, Mn/Fe 비가 높다. 비구형 단괴는 구형 단괴에 비하여 크기가 크고 무겁고, Mn 함량이 적고 Mn/Fe 비는 낮지만, 광물조성이나 내부조직에서는 큰 차이가 없다. 동시베리아해에서 채취된 모든 망간단괴는 Mn/Fe 비가 5 이상으로 높으므로 대부분 속성작용에 의하여 형성된 것으로 여겨진다.

겨울철 온대저기압의 이동경로에 따른 국가어업지도선의 서해 피항지 선정 (A Selection of the Refuge Area in the West Sea for the National Fishery Supervision Vessel according to the Trajectories of the Extratropical Cyclone in Winter Season)

  • 겨울철 한반도와 부근 해역은 대륙에서 발달하는 시베리아고기압과 해양에서 발달하는 알류샨저기압으로 형성되는 전형적인 서고동저형의 기압배치의 영향을 많이 받는다. 이 기압배치의 영향으로 우리나라와 주변 해역, 특히 서해에서는 강한 서풍 내지 북서풍의 계절풍과 강한 바람에 의한 높은 파랑, 폭설 등을 동반하는 악기상이 빈번히 발생한다. 이 연구에서는 겨울철에 서해에서 활동하는 국가어업지도선의 안전한 피항지를 선정하기 위하여 11년간 (1994-2004년)의 지상일기도를 분석하여 온대저기압의 주요 이동경로를 구분하였다. 그리고 온대저기압의 이동경로별로 섬들의 지형적 특성, 수심, 저질의 상대, 조류의 영향 및 어망의 분포 등을 조사하고, 그 결과를 이용하여 서해에서 활동하는 국가어업지도선의 안전한 피항지를 선정하였다.

제주도 고산지역 여름철 저농도 이산화탄소의 발생원인과 이동경로에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Generation and Movement of Low-concentration $CO_2$ in Summer at Gosan, Korea)

  • This study investigates the generation and movement of low-concentration $CO_2$ observed in Gosan during summer from 2002 to 2006. For analysis, additional $CO_2$ data in Anmyeondo, Ryori, Barrow, and Minamitorishima as well as NOAA/ESRL daily global $CO_2$ fields, background trajectories data, and 850 hPa wind fields are also used. Based on analyses using various observed data, we classified three types of low-concentration $CO_2$ in Gosan according to its origin: i) the origin of the Siberian continental, in which the consumption of $CO_2$ is active due to photosynthesis from broad forests, ii) the origin of Okhotsh and Artic seas, in which the low-concentration $CO_2$ is dominant due to high primary productivity by a plankton bloom, and iii) the origin of the Northwestern Pacific which is related to the entry of air mass from high latitudes. These results show that the low-concentration $CO_2$ observed in Gosan during summer is not originated from the Pacific oceans as known in previous studies, but originated from high latitude regions such as the Siberian continental and the Okhotsh and Artic seas.
