Particle Stabilized Wet Foam to Prepare SiO2-SiC Porous Ceramics by Colloidal Processing

  • Porous ceramics with tailored pore size and shape are promising materials for the realization of a number of functional and structural properties. A novel method has been reported for the investigation of the role of SiC in the formation of $SiO_2$ foams by colloidal wet processing. Within a suitable pH range of 9.9 ~ 10.5 $SiO_2$, particles were partially hydrophobized using hexylamine as an amphiphile. Different mole ratios of the SiC solution were added to the surface modified $SiO_2$ suspension. The contact angle was found to be around $73^{\circ}$, with an adsorption free energy $6.8{\times}10^{-12}J$. The Laplace pressure of about 1.25 ~ 1.6 mPa was found to correspond to a wet foam stability of about 80 ~ 85%. The mechanical and thermal properties were analyzed for the sintered ceramics, with the highest compressive load observed at the mole ratio of 1:1.75. Hertzian indentations are used to evaluate the damage behavior under constrained loading conditions of $SiO_2$-SiC porous ceramics.

  • Lithium fluorhectorite 결정상을 함유한 glass ceramics 분말의 형성과 제조된 glass ceramics 분말을 이용한 저온 소결기판의 특성평가를 하였다. Li2O-MgO-MgF2-SiO2 계 유 리로 핵형성 및 결정 성장을 실시하여 lithium fluorhectorite 결정상을 지닌 glass ceramics 를 제조하였다. 유리시편의 핵형성 온도는 46$0^{\circ}C$였고 결정성장온도는 600, 640, 110$0^{\circ}C$에서 나타났다. $600^{\circ}C$에서의 결정상으 Li2.4LiSi4O10F2가 나타났다. Li2.4Mg8LiSi4와 Li2.8Mg0.6SiO4은 lithium fluorhectorite 결정상으로 되기 위한 중간상임을 확인할수 있었다. 64$0^{\circ}C$에서 열처리 후 110$0^{\circ}C$에서 재열처리하여 형성된 결정은 lithium fluorhectorite 와 tridymite가 최종 결정 상으로 나타났다. 이것은 수중에서 water swelling 현상에 의하여 분말화할 수 있었다, 기판 제조용 slurry를 제조하기 위해 glass ceramics 분말에 Al2O3분말을 0,25,50wt%로 혼합한것 과 glass ceramics 분말에 potashborosilica-te glass 분말을 15, 30, 45, 60 wt% 로 배합하 여 doctor blade 법으로 green sheet를 제조하였다. green sheet 는 950~150$0^{\circ}C$로소성하여 기판의 특성을 평가하였다. 겉보기 기공율은 3.06~19,14%이었고, 전기적 특성으로 유전상수 는 3~5(100KHz)를 나타내었다.

Effect of Ti and Si Interlayer Materials on the Joining of SiC Ceramics

  • SiC-based ceramic composites are currently being considered for use in fuel cladding tubes in light-water reactors. The joining of SiC ceramics in a hermetic seal is required for the development of ceramic-based fuel cladding tubes. In this study, SiC monoliths were diffusion bonded using a Ti foil interlayer and additional Si powder. In the joining process, a very low uniaxial pressure of ~0.1 MPa was applied, so the process is applicable for joining thin-walled long tubes. The joining strength depended strongly on the type of SiC material. Reaction-bonded SiC (RB-SiC) showed a higher joining strength than sintered SiC because the diffusion reaction of Si was promoted in the former. The joining strength of sintered SiC was increased by the addition of Si at the Ti interlayer to play the role of the free Si in RB-SiC. The maximum joint strength obtained under torsional stress was ~100 MPa. The joint interface consisted of $TiSi_2$, $Ti_3SiC_2$, and SiC phases formed by a diffusion reaction of Ti and Si.

Effect of $\alpha-SiC $seed on microstructure and fracture toughness of pressureless-sintered $\beta-SiC$ ($\alpha-SiC $seed의 첨가가 상압소결된 $\beta-SiC$의 미세구조와 파괴인성에 미치는 영향)

  • $\beta-SiC $powder with or without the addition of 1 wt% of $\alpha-SiC$ particles (seeds) was pressureless-sintered at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 2 and 4 h using $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ (yttrium aluminum garnet, YAG) as a sintering aid. The introduction of $\alpha-SiC$ seeds into $\beta-SiC$ accelerated :he grain growth of elongated large grains during sintering, resulting in the coarser microstructure. The fracture toughnesses of materials with $\alpha$-SiC seeds and without $\alpha-SiC$ seeds sintered for 4 h were 7.5 and 6.1 $MPa\cdot \textrm m^{1/2}$, respectively. Higher fracture toughness of the material with seeds was due to the enhanced bridging by elongated grains, resulting from coarser microstructure.

  • Effect of the microwave dielectric properties and the microstructure on a mole fraction(x=0.1~0.9) of (1-x)Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-xZnAl$_2$O$_4$ ceramics was investigated. When (1-x)Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-xZnAl$_2$O$_4$(x=0.1~0.9) ceramics were sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$, 135$0^{\circ}C$ and 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hr, the microwave dielectric properties were obtained $\varepsilon$r=6.8~8.3, Q.f$_{0}$=36000~77600. On the other hand, the temperature coefficients of resonant frequency($\tau$$_{f}$) were obtained in the properties of -62ppm/$^{\circ}C$ to -49ppm/$^{\circ}C$. In order to adjust the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau$$_{f}$), CaTiO$_3$was added in (1-x)Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-xZnAl$_2$O$_4$ceramics. 0.7Mg$_2$SiO$_4$-0.2ZnAl$_2$O$_4$-0.1CaTiO$_3$ceramics sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hr showed the excellent microwave dielectric properties of $\varepsilon$r=7.7, Q.f$_{0}$=32000, and $\tau$$_{f}$=-7.9 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.EX>.>.EX>.

  • Reaction bonded $AI_2O_3$(RBAO)-SiC ceramics were prepared from the Al/$AI_2O_3$/SiC powder mixture. The calcined alumina and fused alumina were used as the raw $AI_2O_3$ powder. The same sized (3mm) and differently sized (3mm + Smm) $Zr0_2$ balls were used in attrition milling of starting powders. The effect of $AI_2O_3$ powder shapes on the milling efficiency and reaction sintering was investigated. After attrition milling, isopressed compacts were preheated to 1l00$^{\circ}$C with a heating rate l.5$^{\circ}C$/min and then sintered at the temperature range 1500 to 1$600^{\circ}C$ for S hours with a heating rate 5$^{\circ}C$/min. The powder mixture with fused alumina was effectively comminuted than the mixtures with calcined alumina. And the same sized balls milled more effctive than the differently sized balls. The reaction sintering behavior differed not depending on the shapes of $AI_2O_3$ powder.

High Temperature and Fatigue Strength of crack-healed Mullite/Silicon Carbide Ceramics (균열 치유된 Mullite/SiC 세라믹스의 고온강도와 피로강도)

  • 본 연구에서는 균열 치유 거동을 가지는 소결된 Mullite/SiC의 모재, 열처리재, 균열재, 치유 균열재의 기계적 특성이 논의되었다. 반타원형 균열의 치수는 $100{\mu}m$$200{\mu}m$이다. 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. (a) Mullite/SiC 복합 세라믹스는 균열 치유 능력이 있었다. (b) 최적의 균열 치유 열처리 조건은 $1300^{\circ}C$, 1시간이었다. (c) 치유 가능한 최대 균열 길이는 직경 $100{\mu}m$의 반타원 균열이다. (d) 균열 치유부는 $1200^{\circ}C$이상에서 충분한 강도를 가졌고, 대부분의 시험편은 균열 치유부 이외의 영역에서 파단 하였다. (e) 공기중에서 예열처리는 본 재료의 피로강도 향상에 유용하였다.

Effect of Large $\alpha$-Silicon Carbide Seed Grains on Microstructure and Fracture Toughness of Pressureless-Sintered $\alpha$-Silicon Carbide

  • ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder with or without the addition of 0.1 wt% of large ${\alpha}-SiC$ partices(seeds) was pressureless-sintered at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 2, and 4 h using $Y_3Al_5 O_{12}$ (yttrium aluminum garnet, YAG) as a sintering aid. The materials without seeds had an equiaxed grain struture. In contrast, the materials with seeds sintered for 2 and 4 h had a duplex microstructure with large elongated grains and amall equiaxed grains. Addition of large ${\alpha}-SiC$ seeds into ${\alpha}-SiC$ accelerated the grain growth of some ${\alpha}-SiC$ grains during sintering and resulted in the increased fracture toughness of the sintered materials. The fracture toughnesses of materials with or without seeds sintered for 4 h were 6.6 and $5.2 MPa \;m^{12}$, respectively.

The effects of brazing conditions on the bond strength of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by Ag-Ti based alloys (Ag-Ti계 합금을 사용한 SiC/SiC 및 SiC/연강 브레이징에서 브레이징 조건이 접합강도에 미치는 영향의 연구)

  • The microstructure and bond strength were investigated on the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by Ag-5at%Ti alloy. Ag-5at%Ti-2at%Fe and -5at%Fe brazing alloys were also used to see the effects of Fe addition on the bond strength of SiC/SiC brazed joints. Brazing temperature and brazing gap were selected and examined as brazing variables. The microstructure of SiC/SiC brazed joints was affected by Fe addition to the Ag-5at%Ti alloy, but the bond strength was not. Increasing brazing temperature also changed the microstructure of $Ti_5Si_3$ reaction layer and brazing alloy matrix of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints, but not the bond strength. Brazing gap had a great effects on the bond strength. Decreasing brazing gap from 0.2 mm to 0.1 mm in SiC/SiC brazing increased the bond strength from 187 MPa to 263 MPa and, in SiC/mild steel brazing, from 189 MPa to 212 MPa. It was concluded that the most important parameter on the bond strength in SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazing was the relative ratio between brazing gap and specimen size.

Effect of SiC whisker addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of silicon carbide (탄화규소 휘스커 첨가가 탄화규소의 미세구조와 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • $\beta-SiC$powder with or without the addition of 1-3 wt% of $\beta-SiC$ whiskers (seeds) was hot-pressed at $1850^{\circ}C$ for 1 h using $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ as sintering aids. The hot-pressed materials were subsequently annealed at $1950^{\circ}C$ to enhance grain growth. The introduction of $\beta-SiC$ whiskers into $\beta-SiC$ does not affect the microstructure as well as mechanical properties significantly because the whiskers are not viable in the presence of liquid phase during hot-pressing. The strengths and fracture toughnesses of the hot-pressed and subsequently 5 h-annealed materials with 1 wt% $\beta-SiC$ whiskers and without $\beta-SiC$ whiskers were 465 MPa and 5.8 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$, and 451 MPa and 5.5 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$, respectively.
