  • The aim of this study was to analyze the local distribution of the heavy metal concentration in Daegu and Ulsan which were divided into the residual areas, the traffic dense areas and the industrial areas. The Inductively Coupled Plasma(ICP) was used to analyze heavy metals, such as As, Cr, Hg, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu and minor metals, such as Fe, Si, Mg, Ca, AI, Na, K. The results of this analysis showed that the content of heavy metals which was classified by districts in Daegu and Ulsan was the highest in the industrial areas followed by the traffic dense areas and the residual areas. Compared to the level of heavy metals of national and local soil survey network in 2003, contamination of heavy metals in Daegu was lower than national average. However, the content of Cd, As, Zn in Ulsan was respectively 13.38 times, 472 times and 2.65 times higher than national average contamination. In addition, compared to the soil pollution level of the environmental protection law, contamination of all areas in Daegu was lower. But the content of As at the industrial areas in Ulsan was 10.71 times higher than standard of soil pollution and 4.28 times higher than standard of measures against soil contamination.

  • In last two decades, an impressive progress has been recorded in terms of developing new materials or refining existing material composition/microstructure in order to obtain better performance in biomedical applications. The success of such efforts clearly demands better understanding of various concepts, e.g. biocompatibility, host response, cell-biomaterial interaction. In this article, we review the fundamental understanding that is required with respect to biomaterials development, as well as various materials and their properties, which are relevant in applications, such as hard tissue replacement. A major emphasize has been placed to present various design aspects, in terms of materials processing, of ceramics and polymer based biocomposites, Among the bioceramic composites, the research results obtained with Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based biomaterials with metallic (Ti) or ceramic (Mullite) reinforcements as well as $SiO_2-MgO-Al_2O_3-K_2O-B_2O_3-F$ glass ceramics and stabilized $ZrO_2$ based bioinert ceramics are summarized. The physical as well as tribological properties of Polyethylene (PE) based hybrid biocomposites are discussed to illustrate the concept on how can the physical/wear properties be enhanced along with biocompatibility due to combined addition of bioinert and bioactive ceramic to a bioinert polymeric matrix. The tribological and corrosion properties of some important orthopedic metallic alloys based on Ti or Co-Cr-Mo are also illustrated. At the close, the future perspective on orthopedic biomaterials development and some unresolved issues are presented.

  • DLC film was synthesized on plastic injection mold(SKD11, $30\;mm\;{\times}\;19\;mm\;{\times}\;0.5\;mm$) and Si(100) wafer for 2 h at $130^{\circ}C$ under 6 mTorr using hybrid method of rf sputtering and ion source. The obtained film was analysed by Raman spectroscopy, AFM, TEM, Nano indenter and scratch tester, etc. The film was defined as an amorphous phase. In the Raman spectrum, broad peak of $sp^2$-bonded carbon attributed to graphite at $1550\;cm^{-1}$ were observed, and the ratio of ID($sp^3$ diamond intensity)/IG($sp^2$ graphite intensity) was approximately 0.54. The adhesion of DLC film was more than 80 N with scratch tester when $0.2\;{\mu}m$ thickness Cr was coated as interlayer. The micro-hardness was distributed at 35~37 GPa. The friction coefficient was 0.02~0.07, and surface roughness(Ra) was 0.34~1.64 nm. The lifetime of DLC coated plastic injection mold using as a connector part in computer was more than 2 times of non-coated mold.

  • Zinc Oxide(ZnO) thin films on Si (100) substrate were deposited by RF magnetron sputter with changing sputtering conditions such as argon/oxygen gas ratios, RF power, and substrate temperature, chamber pressure and target-substrate distance. To analyze a crystallographic properties of the films, $\theta/2\theta$ mode X-ray diffraction, SEM, and AFM analyses. C-axis preferred orientation, resistivity. and surface roughness highly depended on $Ar/O_2$ gas ratios. The resistivity of ZnO thin films rapidly increased with increasing oxygen ratio and the resistivity value of $9{\times}10^7{\Omega}cm$ was obtained at a working pressure of 10 mTorr with $Ar/O_2$=50/50. The surface roughness was also improved with increasing oxygen ratio and the ZnO films deposited with $Ar/O_2$=50/50 showed the excellent roughness value of $28.7{\AA}$.

  • PV cell modeling is necessary both for software and hardware simulators in analyzing and testing the performance of PV generation systems. Unique I-V curve of a PV cell identifies its own characteristics by electrical equivalent model that is composed of diode constants ($I_o$, $v_t$), photo-generated current ($I_{ph}$), series resistance ($R_s$), and shunt resistance ($R_{sh}$). Photo-generated current can be easily estimated since it is proportional to irradiation level. However, other electrical parameters should be solved from the manufacturer's data sheet that is consisted with three remarkable operating points such as open circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$), short circuit current ($I_{sc}$), and maximum power voltage/current ($V_{MPP}/I_{MPP}$). This paper explains and analyzes mathematical process of a novel PV cell modeling algorithm that was proposed by the authors with the name of "K-algorithm".

  • Selective vapor deposition of conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), thin films has been carried out on self assembled monolayers patterned oxide substrate. Since the 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene(EDOT) monomer can be polymerized only in the presence of oxidant such as $FeCl_3$, the PEDOT thin film is selectively deposited on patterned $FeCl_3$, which only adsorbs on the partly removed SAMs region due to the inability of $FeCl_3$ to adsorb on SAMs. Therefore, the partly removed SAMs can act as an adsorption layer for the $FeCl_3$ and also as a glue layer for the deposition of PEDOT, resulting in the significantly increased adhesion of PEDOT to $SiO_2$ substrate. The use of UV lithography and Cr patterned quartz mask provided the formation of SAMs patterns on oxide substrates, which allowed for the selective deposition of conductive PEDOT thin films.$^{oo}The$ new process was successfully developed for the selective deposition of PEDOT thin films on SAMs patterned oxide substrate, providing a new way for the patterning of vapor phase deposition of PEDOT thin films with accurate alignment and addressing the inherent adhesion issues between PEDOT and dielectrics.

  • The surface appearance of chromium electrodeposit was studied by employing a pulse curr-ent plating in self-regulating high speed (SRHS) bath containing 20 g/$\ell$, K2SiF6 7.5 g/$\ell$ SrSO4 and 250 g/$\ell$ CrO3. As the pulse frequency increased, the surface appearance changed suddenly from bright a-ppearance in a direct current plating condition to gray one in the range of pulse frequency less than about 20KHz. However the bright appearance is recovered as the pulse frequen-cy exceeded 20 KHz. This phenomena seemed to be related with the preferred orientation of electrodeposits, considering the relationship between the preferred orientation of elect-rodeposits and surface appearance in a SRHS bath. Direct current plating was also applied to both Sargent and SRHS bath and investigat-ion on surface appearance was extended to the high current density of 400 A/dm2. In a Sa-rgent bath, the increase in bath temperature was necessary for bright appearance as the current density was increased within 150 A/dm2, but bright region was shown in the cons-tant temperature of 70-75$^{\circ}C$ above the current density of 150A/dm2. On the other hand, two regions of surface brightness was found in a SRHS bath. One is region in the low temperature less than 25$^{\circ}C$ and the other in the moderate temperature range from 55$^{\circ}C$ to 65$^{\circ}C$.

  • Methanol was directly produced by the partial oxidation of methane with four-component mixed oxide catalysts. Four-component(Mo-Bi-Cr-Si) mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation and sol-gel methods. The catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method showed about eleven times higher surface area than that prepared by the co-precipitation method. From the $O_2$-TPD experiment of the prepared catalysts, it was proven that there exists two types of oxygen species, and the oxygen species that participates in the partial oxidation reaction is the lattice oxygen desorbing around $750^{\circ}C$. The optimum reaction condition for methanol production was $420^{\circ}C$, 50 bar, flow rate of 115 mL/min, and $CH_4/O_2$ ratio of 10/1.5, providing methane conversion and methanol selectivity of 3.2 and 26.7%, respectively.

  • Micro-conductive patterns were microfabricated on an insulating substrate ($SiO_2$) surface by a selective electroless nickel plating process in order to investigate the formation of seed layers. To fabricate micro-conductive patterns, a thin layer of metal (Cu.Cr) was deposited in the desired micropattern using laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT). and above this layer, a second layer was plated by selective electroless plating. The LIFT process. which was carried out in multi-scan mode, was used to fabricate micro-conductive patterns via electroless nickel plating. This method helps to improve the deposition process for forming seed patterns on the insulating substrate surface and the electrical conductivity of the resulting patterns. This study analyzes the effect of seed pattern formation by LIFT and key parameters in electroless nickel plating during micro-conductive pattern fabrication. The effects of the process variables on the cross-sectional shape and surface quality of the deposited patterns are examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and an optical microscope.
