Densification of Reaction Bonded TiC Composite by Infiltration of Liquid Phase Ni/Si/Co (액상 Ni/Si/Co 침투에 의한 반응결합 TiC 복합체의 치밀화)

  • The reaction-bonded TiC-Ni/Si/Co composites were prepared by the melt infiltration of Co, Si, and Ni me-tal into the TiC preforms. The miocrostructure reaction composition and mechanical properties were in-vestigated. In the case of the melt infiltrated with Co and Ni TiC grain shape was changed from angular to spherical shape with the average grain size of ∼5$\mu\textrm{m}$. In the case of the melt infiltrated with Co/Si or Ni/Si, Si was reacted with TiC particles and formed SiC particles. The bending strength of both specimens which have atomic ratio of 3 were 710 MPa and 515 MPa respectively. In the case of the melt infiltrated with Ni/Si/Co,. nonstoichiometric TiC was formed and its bending strength decreased to 420 MPa.

  • In this paper, we study about wear properties for the metal matrix composites fabricated by low pressure infiltration process. Metal fiber preform reinforced aluminum alloy composite were fabricated by low pressure casting process under 0.4MPa. Infiltration condition was changed the pressure infiltration time of 1 s, 2 s and 5 s under a constant pressure of 0.4MPa. The molten alloy completely infiltrated the FeCrSi metal perform regardless of the increase in the pressure acceleration time. However, the infiltration time at the pressure acceleration time of 1s was shorter than at the pressure acceleration time of 2s or 5s. The FeCrSi/A366.0 composite was investigated the porosity. The porosity is reducing as the pressure acceleration time compared with the pressure acceleration time of 2s and 5s. The FeCrSi/A366.0 composites were investigated the wear resistance. FeCrSi/A366.0 composite at pressure acceleration time of 1s has excellent wear resistance.

Preparation of Si-SiC Composites by Si-Infiltration (Si 침윤에 의한 Si-SiC 복합체 제조)

  • Reaction bonded si-SiC composites were prepared by silicon infiltration technique at temperature of 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in vaccum atmosphere. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Si-SiC composites were investigated and characterized. UF-15 and SE-10 as SiC powders, phenolic resin and carbon black as carbon source, and metallic silicon powder as molten Si source were used as starting materials. New SiC crystallines nucleatd and grown by reaction of Si and C were detected by TEM and SEM-EDS. The bonding between new and original SiC was found to be strong. But the wetting of SiC by unreacted metallic Si and the rapid grain growth of new SiC decreased density and fracture toughness. Fracture toughness and modulus of rupture of Si-SiC composite were about 3.2 MPa.m1/2 and 480 MPa, respectively.

  • The main objective of this research effort was to develope the performance of C/SiC composites manufactured by LSI (Liquid Silicon Infiltration) method for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system and ensure the performance analysis technique. The various carbon preform were manufactured by filament winding, tape rolling, involute layup and stack molding process. For the best performance of thermal and mechanical properties, many process conditions were tested and selected by varying preform, the content of SiC, temperature, impregnation resin and chemical vapour reaction. In conclusion, the high performance and reliability of C/SiC composite were proved for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system. And the performance analysis technique related to mathematical ablation model was originated.

Excluding molten fluoride salt from nuclear graphite by SiC/glassy carbon composite coating

  • SiC coating and SiC/glassy carbon composite coating were prepared on IG-110 nuclear graphite (Toyo Tanso Co., Ltd., Japan) to strengthen its inertness to molten fluoride salt used in molten salt reactor (MSR). Two kinds of modified graphite were obtained and correspondingly named as IG-110-1 and IG-110-2, which referred to modified IG-110 with a single SiC coating and a SiC/glassy carbon composite coating, respectively. Both structure and property of modified graphite were carefully researched and contrasted with virgin IG-110. Results indicated that modified graphite presented better comprehensive properties such as more compact structure and higher resistance to molten salt infiltration. With the protection of coatings, the infiltration amounts of fluoride salt into modified graphite were much less than that into virgin IG-110 at the same circumstance. Especially, the infiltration amount of fluoride salt into IG-110-2 under 5 atm was merely 0.26 wt%, which was much less than that into virgin IG-110 under 1.5 atm (13.5 wt%) and the critical index proposed for nuclear graphite used in MSR (0.5 wt%). The SiC/glassy carbon composite coating gave rise to highest resistance to molten salt infiltration into IG-110-2, and thus demonstrated it could be a promising protective coating for nuclear graphite used in MSR.

Fabrication of SiC Fiber Reinforced Porous Reaction Bonded SiC Composite and Its Mechanical Properties (SiC Fiber 강화 다공질 반응 소결 탄화규소 Composite의 제조 및 기계적 특성)

  • In this study, chopped Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber Reinforced Porous Reaction Bonded SiC (RBSC) composites and it fabrication process were developed by using Si melt infiltration process. The porosity and average pore size in fabricated chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composites were in the range of $30{\sim}40%$ and $40-90{\mu}m$, which mainly determined by the SiC powder size used as starting material and amount of residual Si in porous composites. The maximum flexural strength of chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composite was as high as 80 MPa. The delayed fracture behavior was observed in chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composites upon 3-point bending strength test.

  • The SiC/MoSi2 composite material was prepared by infiltration with the mixture of metal Si and MoSi2 into the preform of $\alpha$-SiC and graphite under the vacuum atmosphere of 10-1 torr. The mechanical properties, phases and microstructural characteristics have been investigated by employing an universal testing machine, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. With the increase of MoSi2/Si mixing content, the quantity of the residual silicon phase was decreased and the hardness and fracture toughness of composite materials were increased. Also, as the infiltration temperature increased, a lot of fine-grained $\beta$-SiC phases, which were produced from the reaction of graphite and liquid silicon melt, were transformed to $\alpha$-SiC phases.

  • The effect of SiC additive on the densification behavior and microstructural change of $TiB_2$ ceramics was investigated. The infiltration and direct mixing with polycarbosilane (PCS), which was converted to SiC by pyrolysis during sintering, were used for the addition of SiC. The addition of Fe enhanced the densification of $TiB_2$, but which resulted in exaggerated grain growth. However, the addition of PCS enhanced the densification and suppressed the exaggerated grain growth of $TiB_2$. Moreover, the addition of PCS using direct mixing was more effective for suppress of grain growth as compare to the addition of PCS using infiltration.

  • 용융 Si 침윤 방법에 의한 새로운 다공질 RBSC 제조공정이 개발되었으며, 용융 Si 침윤공정 방법으로 제조된 다공질 RBSC의 최대 3-점 파괴 강도는 18 MPa, 최대 기공율은 46% 범위이었다. 용융 Si 침윤방법으로 제조된 다공질 RBSC의 기계적 특성 및 기공율은 성형체내 SiC 입자 표면의 카본 source의 양 및 침윤시 사용된 Si의 양에 직접적으로 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 침윤시 상대 Si 양은 40%를 사용하였으며, SiC 입자 표면에 graphite와 phenol resin을 함께 코팅한 성형체를 사용하여 제조된 다공질 RBSC에서 최대 파괴강도 값을 얻었다. 상대 Si의 양의 증가는 다공질 RBSC의 파괴강도를 감소시켰으며, SiC 입자 표면의 카본 source 코팅층은 graphite와 phenol resin을 같이 사용하였을 때 다공질 RBSC의 파괴강도는 증가되었으나, RBSC 내 기공율은 감소되었다.

  • Reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) composite for heat-exchanger was fabricated by molten Si infiltration method. For enforcing fracture toughness to reaction bonded silicon carbide composite, the surface of carbon fiber has coating layer by SiC or pyro-carbon. For SiC layer coating, CVD method was used. And for carbon layer coating, the phenol resin was used. In the case of carbon layer coating, fracture toughness and fracture strength were enhancing to 4.4 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 279 MPa.
