Objectives: This study was done to look into whether Nrf2 take some role in the anti-lipogenic effect of kaurenoic acid in a nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cellular model. Materials and Methods: We measured the effect of kaurenoic acid on intracellular steatosis and Nrf2 activation. Next, the effect of kaurenoic acid on SREBP-1c and some lipogenic genes in palmitate treated HepG2 cells with or without Nrf2 silencing. Results: The increased SREBP-1c expression was significantly decreased by concomitant kaurenoic acid treatment in non-targeting negative control siRNA transfected HepG2 cells. However, kaurenoic acid did not significantly inhibited increased SREBP-1c level in Nrf2 specific siRNA transfected HepG2 cells Conclusions: Kaurenoic acid has a potential to activate Nrf2, which may suppress SREBP-1c mediated intracellular steatosis in HepG2 cells.

The growth mode of the Si layers which were grown on Si(111) by using Ag as surfactant were investigated by intensity oscillations of the RHEED specular spot at the different temperatures. we found that the introduction of Ag as the surfactant alters the growth mode from a three-dimensional clustering mechanism to a two-dimensional layer-by-layer growth. In the growth of Si layers on Si(111) with a surfactant Ag, At $450^{\circ}C$, RHEED intensity oscillation was very stable and periodic from early stage of deposition to 32 ML. RHEED patterns during homoepitaxial growth at $450^{\circ}C$ was changed from $7{\times}7$ structure into ${\sqrt{3}}{\times}{\sqrt{3}}$ structures. Since the ${\sqrt{3}}{\times}{\sqrt{3}}$ structure include no stacking fault, the stacking fault layer seems to be reconstructed into normal stacking one at transition from the $7{\times}7$ structure to a ${\sqrt{3}}{\times}{\sqrt{3}}$ one. We also found that the number of the intensity oscillation of the specular spot for Si growth with a surfactant Ag was more than for Si growth without a surfactant. This result may be explained that the activation energy decrease for the surface diffusion of Si atoms due to segregation of the surfactant toward the growing surface.
Thermoelectric conversion properties of commercial Fe-Si2 and Fe-Si alloy ingots prepared by RF inductive furnace were investigated. As sintering temperature increased, density of the specimen increased and the phase transformation from metallic phases ($\varepsilon$-FeSi, ${\alpha}$-Fe2Si5) to semiconducting phase (${\beta}$-FeSi2) occurred more effectively. The FeSi phase was detected even after 100hrs of annealing treatment. For the Fesi1.95∼FeSi2.05 specimens prepared by RF inductive furnace, the thermoelectric property improved as the composition of the specimen approached to stoichiometric composition FeSi2. Electrical conductivity of the specimen increased with increasing temperatures showing typical semiconducting behavior. From the electrical conductivity measurements, activation energy in the intrinsic region (above about 700 K) was calculated to be approximately 0.46 eV. In spite of non-doping, the Seebeck coefficient for every specimen exhibited p-type conduction due to Si deficiency. Its maximum value was located at about 475 K, and then decreased abruptly with increasing temperatures. The power factor was governed by the Seebeck coefficient of the specimen more significantly than by electrical conductivity.
Treatment of Hafnia alvei aspartase with limited tryptic digestion resulted in a marked increase in enzymatic activity. The activation required a few minutes to attain maximum level and, thereafter, the activity gradually decreased to complete inactivation. The degree of cleavage associated with the activation was extremely small as judged by SDS-PAGE. Upon activation, the optimum pH and temperature were essentially unchanged. When trypsin-activated enzyme was denatured in 4 M guanidine-HCI followed by removal of the denaturant by dilution, the restoration of activity was similar (40%) to that of the native enzyme, indicating a degree of stability. The $pK_a$ obtained on the acidic side and the $pK_b$ obtained on the basic side of trypsin-activated aspartase were 6.6 and 8.6, respectively, the same as those of the native aspartase, indicating that aspartase may exist in a stable conformation after limited tryptic digestion. These results indicate that the activation of H. alvei may be mediated by a conformational change away from the active site of individual subunits.

This paper covers our efforts to improve the low carrier mobility and light instability of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films with microcrystalline silicon $({\mu}c-Si)$ films. We successfully prepared ${\mu}c-Si$ films on $CaF_2$/glass substrate by decomposition of $SiH_4$ in RPCVD system. The $CaF_2$ films on glass served as a seed layer for ${\mu}c-Si$ film growth. The XRD analysis on $CaF_2$/glass illustrated a (111) preferred $CaF_2$ grains with the lattice mismatch less than 5 % of Si. We achieved ${\mu}c-Si$ films with a crystalline volume fraction of 61 %, (111) and (220) crystal orientations. grain size of $706\AA$, activation energy of 0.49 eV, and Photo/dark conductivity ratio of 124. By using a $CaF_2$/glass structure. we were able to achieve an improved ${\mu}c-Si$ films at a low substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$.
Polycrystalline silicon carbide (SiC) thick films were depostied by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) using CH3SiCl3 (MTS) and H2 gaseous mixture onto isotropic graphite substrate. Effects of deposition variables on the SiC film were investigated. Deposition rate had been found to be surface-reaction controlled below reactor temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$ and mass-transport controlled over 125$0^{\circ}C$. Apparent activation energy value decreased below 120$0^{\circ}C$ and deposition rate decreased above 125$0^{\circ}C$ by depletion effect of the reactant gas in the direction of flow in a horizontal hot wall reactor. Microstructure of the as-deposited SiC films was strongly influenced by deposition temperature and position. Microstructural change occurred greater in the mass transport controlled region than surface reaction controlled region. The as-deposited SiC layers in this experiment showed stoichiometric composition and there were no polytype except for $\beta$-SiC. The preferred orientation plane of the polycrystalline SiC layers was (220) plane at a high reactant gas concentration in the mass transfer controlled region. As depletion effect of reactant concentration was increased, SiC films preferentially grow as (111) plane.

a-Si:H and poly-Si TFT(thin film transistor) characteristics were investigated using an inverted staggered type TFT. The TFT an as-grown a-Si:H exhibited a low field effect mobility, transconductance, and high gate threshold voltage. The poly-Si films were achieved by using an isothermal and RTA treatment for glow discharge deposited a-Si:H films. The a-Si:H films were cystallized at the various temperature from 600$^{\circ}C$ to 1000$^{\circ}C$. As anneal temperature was elevated, the TFT exhibited increased g$\sub$m/ and reduced V$\sub$ds/. V$\sub$T/. The poly-Si grain boundary passivation with grain boundary trap types and activation energies as a function of anneal temperature. The poly-si TFT showed an improved I$\sub$nm//I$\sub$off/ ratio of 10$\^$6/, reduced gate threshold voltage, and increased field effect mobility by three orders.

Purpose: Notch is an important signaling pathway that regulates cell fate, stem cell maintenance and the initiation of differentiation in many tissues. It has been reported that activation of Notch-1 contributes to tumorigenesis. However, whether Notch signaling might have a role in chemoresistance of prostate cancer is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Notch-1 silencing on the sensitivity of prostate cancer cells to docetaxel treatment. Methods: siRNA against Notch-1 was transfected into PC-3 prostate cancer cells. Proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle distribution were examined in the presence or absence of docetaxel by MTT and flow cytometry. Expression of $p21^{waf1/cip1}$ and Akt as well as activation of Akt in PC-3 cells were detected by Western blot and Real-time PCR. Results: Silencing of Notch-1 promoted docetaxel induced cell growth inhibition, apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in PC-3 cells. In addition, these effects were associated with increased $p21^{waf1/cip1}$ expression and decreased Akt expression and activation in PC-3 cells. Conclusion: Notch-1 promotes chemoresistance of prostate cancer and could be a potential therapeutic target.
Microglia play a role in maintaining and resolving brain tissue homeostasis. In pathological conditions, microglia release pro-inflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic factors, which aggravate the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Autophagy pathway might be involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic factors in microglia, though details of the mechanism remain largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the role of the autophagy pathway in activated BV2 microglia cells. In BV2 cells, rapamycin treatment activated the formation of anti-LC3-labeled autophagosomes, whereas the ATG5 depletion using siRNA-ATG5 prevented the formation of LC3-labeled autophagosomes, indicating that BV2 cells exhibit an active classical autophagy system. When treated with LPS, BV2 cells expressed an increase of anti-LC3-labeled dots. The levels of LC3-labeled dots were not suppressed, instead tended to be enhanced, by the inhibition of the autophagy pathway with siRNA-ATG5 or wortmannin, suggesting that LPS-induced LC3-labeled dots in nature were distinct from the typical autophagosomes. The levels of LPS-induced expression of iNOS and IL6 were suppressed by treatment with rapamycin, and conversely, their expressions were enhanced by siRNA-ATG5 treatment. Moreover, the activation of the autophagy pathway using rapamycin inhibited cell death of LPS-stimulated microglia. These results suggest that although microglia possess a typical autophagy pathway, the glial cells express a non-typical autophagy pathway in response to LPS, and the activation of the autophagy pathway suppresses the expression of iNOS and IL6, and the cell death of LPS-stimulated microglia.

The mechanical strength of silicon carbide dose nor permit the use of diffusion as a means to achieve selective doping as required by most electronic devices. While epitaxial layers may be doped during growth, ion implantation is needed to define such regions as drain and source wells, junction isolation regions, and so on. Ion activation without an annealing cap results in serious crystal damage as these activation processes must be carried out at temperatures on the order of 1600$^{\circ}C$. Ion implanted silicon carbide that is annealed in either a vacuum or argon environment usually results in a surface morphology that is highly irregular due to the out diffusion of Si atoms. We have developed and report a successful process of using silicon overpressure, provided by silane in a CAD reactor during the anneal, to prevent the destruction of the silicon carbide surface, This process has proved to be robust and has resulted in ion activation at a annealing temperature of 1600$^{\circ}C$ without degradation of the crystal surface as determined by AFM and RBS. In addition XPS was used to look at the surface and near surface chemical states for annealing temperatures of up to 1700$^{\circ}C$. The surface and near surface regions to approximately 6 nm in depth was observed to contain no free silicon or other impurities thus indicating that the process developed results in an atomically clean SiC surface and near surface region within the detection limits of the instrument(${\pm}$1 at %).
