  • The reactive wetting behaviors of molten Zn-Al-Mg alloys on MnO- and amorphous (a-) $SiO_2$-covered steel sheets were investigated by the sessile drop method, as a function of the Al and Mg contents in the alloys. The sessile drop tests were carried out at $460^{\circ}C$ and the variation in the contact angles (${\theta}_c$) of alloys containing 0.2-2.5 wt% Al and 0-3.0 wt% Mg was monitored for 20 s. For all the alloys, the MnO-covered steel substrate exhibited reactive wetting whereas the $a-SiO_2$-covered steel exhibited nonreactive, nonwetting (${\theta}_c>90^{\circ}$) behavior. The MnO layer was rapidly removed by Al and Mg contained in the alloys. The wetting of the MnO-covered steel sheet significantly improved upon increasing the Mg content but decreased upon increasing the Al content, indicating that the surface tension of the alloy droplet is the main factor controlling its wettability. Although the reactions of Al and Mg in molten alloys with the $a-SiO_2$ layer were found to be sluggish, the wettability of Zn-Al-Mg alloys on the $a-SiO_2$ layer improved upon increasing the Al and Mg contents. These results suggest that the wetting of advanced high-strength steel sheets, the surface oxide layer of which consists of a mixture of MnO and $SiO_2$, with Zn-Al-Mg alloys could be most effectively improved by increasing the Mg content of the alloys.

  • Amorphous $Fe_{73.5}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{16.5}B_{6}$ ribbons were annealed for different time at $500^{\circ}C$ and $552^{\circ}C$, just before and after the exothermic reaction in DSC curve. The development of nanocrystalline phase was investigated by means of $M\"{o}ssbsuer$ spectroscopy. The crystalline phase consists mainly of $DO_{3}Fe-Si$. Though slight in amount (5%), another ferromagnetic phase which could be presumed $t-Fe_{3}B$ was detected Si content of $DO_{3}Fe-Si$, Si/(Fe+Si), was 0.218 under the heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 60 min and 0.222 at $552^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. Since then both of those values decreased with time until 120 min and finally these two values remained constant at 0.210. The variation in Si content with annealing time results in the variation in the hyperfine field and the isomer shift. The increase in the mean hyperfine fields and the decrease in the mean isomer shifts of Fe-Si are caused by the increase in Si content. The volume fractions of residual amorphous phase rapidly decrease during the early stage of annealing and come nearer to saturation after 120 min both at $500^{\circ}C$ and $552^{\circ}C$. The decrease in the mean hyperfine field of residual amorphous. in spite of slight changes in the volume fractions of Fe-Si and of residual amorphous after 120 min. is caused by the increase in the content of Nb and B in residual amorphous phase. The saturated volume fraction of the crystalline phase was 81% for $500^{\circ}C$ (180 min) and 77% for $552^{\circ}C$ (960 min), different from expectation.

  • Effect of silicon doping into ZnSnO systems was investigated using solution process. Addition of silicon was used to suppress oxygen vacancy generation. The transfer characteristics of the device showed threshold voltage shift toward the positive direction with increasing Si content due to the high binding energy of silicon atoms with oxygen. As a result, the carrier concentration was decreased with increasing Si content.

  • A new process based on the co-precipitation method was developed fer removing harmful impurities during Mn-Zn ferrite production such as $SiO_2$ and P from waste pickle liquor. By this process a final result of less than 100 ppm of $SiO_2$ and less than 10 ppm of P content in the ferric oxide is easily attained. Though Ca cannot be removed by this process, water rinsing of the ferric oxide is effective fer reducing Ca content to less than 100 pm. For further purification, the origins of each impurity must be investigated and then taken away.

  • The chemical shift of SiOC film was observed according to the flow rate ratio. SiOC film has the broad main band of $880{\sim}1190cm^{-1}$ and the sharp Si-$CH_3$ bond at $1252cm^{-1}$, and the infrared spectra in the Si-O-C bond moved to low frequency according to the increasing of an oxygen flow rate. The chemical shift affected the carbon content in the SiOC film, and the decreasing of carbon atoms elongated the C-H bonding length, relatively. The main bond without the sharp Si-$CH_3$ bond at $1252cm^{-1}$ consisted of Si-C, C-O and Si-O bonds, and became the bonding structure of the Si-O-C bond.

  • For the preparation of SiC composite, the properties of reaction sintering in the SiC-C-Si-Ti system with the titanium contents variation were investigated. Either the case of titanium additions or the case of direct infiltration of titanium in SiC+C preform, the newly formed fine-grained $\beta$-SiC, which was reacted from the molten silicon with graphite, was intergranulated between the original $\alpha$-SiC particles. Also titanium disilicide (TiSi2) was discontinuously formed isolated pocket in silicon matrix. The amount of titanium disilicide was gradually increased as titanium content increase. With the results of hardness and fracture toughness measurement, SiC-titanium disilicide (TiSi2) composite represented high properties compared with the system of the infiltrated pure silicon.

  • Quaternary Ti-Si-C-N coatings were deposited on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating (AIP) and sputtering techniques using Ti and Si targets, in an $Ar/N_2/CH_4$ gaseous mixture. The crystallinity, bending status, and microstructure of the Ti-Si-C-N coatings were measured by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), The micro-hardness of Ti(C,N) and Ti-Si-N coatings were about 30 and 40 GPa, respectively. As the Si was incorporated into Ti(C,N) coatings, the Ti-Si-C-N coatings having Si content of $8.9\;at.\%$ showed the maximum hardness value of about 55 GPa. In this work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-Si-C-N coatings were systematically investigated.

  • Al-Si-Cu alloys benefit from the addition of copper for better hardness and strength through precipitation hardening, which results in remarkably strong alloys. However, the addition of copper expands the solidification range of Al-Si-Cu alloys, and due to this, these alloys become more prone to hot tearing, which is one of the most common and serious fracture phenomena encountered during solidification. The conventional evaluation method of the hot tearing properties of an alloy is a relative and qualitative analysis approach that does not provide quantitative data about this phenomenon. In the present study, the mold itself part of a device developed in Instone et al. was partially modified to obtain more reliable quantitative data pertaining to the hot tearing properties of an Al-Si-Cu casting alloy. To assess the influence of Cu element, four levels of Cu contents were tested (0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 wt.%) in the Al-Si-Cu system alloy and the hot tearing properties were evaluated in each case. As the Cu content was increased, the hot tearing strength decreased to 2.26, 1.53, 1.18, and 1.04 MPa, respectively. At the moment hot tearing occurred, the corresponding solid fraction and solidification rate decreased at the same temperature due to the increase in the solid-liquid coexistence range as the Cu content increased. The morphology of the fracture surfaces was changed from dendrites to dendrites covered with residual liquid, and CuAl2 phases were observed in the vicinity of hot tearing.

  • The dense sintered bodies of Si/SiC composite with various Si contents could be fabricated by changing the green density in the forming process. The Si/SiC/graphite composites with various graphite contents could be also fabricated by changing a graphite content in the starting composition. Their mechanical and tribological properties were characterized and wear mechanism was also studided. The hardness and strength of the Si/SiC and the Si/SiC/graphite were decreased with increasing the contents of free Si and graphite, respectively. However, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate had no specific relations to their hardness and strength. Adhesion of free Si was a main factor to determine a wear resistance of the Si/SiC composite. In the case of the Si/SiC/graphite, solid lubricationl and liquid reservoir of the graphite particles played the main role of the reduction of the friction force. In the torque test to estimate the possibility of practical of practical applications, the value of torque between the Al2O3 disk and Si/SiC/graphite disk was 1/6 lower compared with two $Al_2O_3$ disks on the basis of 100,000 cycles.

  • The effect of Ni content in Cu underlayer on the magnetoresistance of Cu/Co artificial superlattice has been investigated. As the content of Ni increased, the preferred orientation of artificial superlattice changed from fec (100) to fcc (111) due to the change of the preferred orientation of the underlayer. When the content of Ni was 6 %, 26.7 % of magnetoresistance with 175 Oe of saturation field could be obtained in ${[Cu(19\AA)/Co(30\AA)]}_{20}|Cu-6%Ni(200\AA)/Si$.
