  • Background: Ascertainment bias are common in epidemiologic studies to assess the association between thyroid cancer risk and living near nuclear power plants because many thyroid cancers are diagnosed by chance through health examination. We surveyed the ultra sonography (USG) examination history and conducted thyroid and breast USG in residents living near nuclear power plants. Materials and Methods: The study population comprised 2,421 residents living near nuclear power plants in Korea. Information on demographic characteristics, including diagnostic examination history, was collected by interview using questionnaires. USG examination was conducted to evaluate the presence of thyroid nodules and breast lesion. Study participants were divided into 3 groups according to the distance of their respective villages from a nuclear power plant. The proportions of USG examination history and prevalence of thyroid nodules and breast lesions were compared between groups. Results and Discussion: Examination histories of thyroid USG were 23.1%, 13.7%, and 10.5% in men and 31.3%, 26.7%, 18.3% in women in the short, intermediate, and long distance groups, respectively. There were significant inverse associations between thyroid USG history and the distance from nuclear power plants (P for trend = 0.001 for men and 0.017 for women). However, there was no association between the distance of villages from nuclear power plants and prevalence of thyroid nodules. Conclusion: Our results suggest that there may be an ascertainment bias in population-based studies examining the harmful effects of NPPs examination and researchers should pay attention to ascertainment bias resulted from differential health examination. Correction for ascertainment bias, active follow-up and examination for all study population to remove differential health examination is needed.

  • This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of the use of distance-evaluation tools and methods among students with learning difficulties from the teachers' point of view, to achieve this goal. A scale was built, and the psychometric characteristics were validated. It consisted, in its final form, of 17 items distributed on four axes, in addition to three open questions. It was applied to a random sample of (149) teachers of students with learning difficulties in Makkah Region. The results showed that teachers' keenness to encourage students with learning difficulties, so that they would not feel frustrated with the distance learning process. It was also evident that teachers did not use achievement portfolios in the evaluation process. In connection with the appropriate evaluation methods, the majority indicated the use of work sheets and visual evaluation methods that rely on audio and visual skills, such as presenting videos, pictures, audio and games, and applying short objective tests. Among the proposals to improve evaluation methods and tools: Individual evaluation, attention to individual treatment, obligating personal attendance of students to school, splitting the required tasks, and not increasing the skills required to be mastered. As for the obstacles that teachers face: Lack of time, difficulty in communicating with students with distance learning difficulties and problems related to the Internet such as interruption, weakness, or lack of availability.

  • Electrical stimulation through retinal prosthesis elicits both short and long-latency retinal ganglion cell (RGC) spikes. Because the short-latency RGC spike is usually obscured by electrical stimulus artifact, it is very important to isolate spike from stimulus artifact. Previously, we showed that topographic prominence (TP) discriminator based algorithm is valid and useful for artifact subtraction. In this study, we compared the performance of forward backward (FB) filter only vs. TP-adopted FB filter for artifact subtraction. From the extracted retinae of rd1 mice, we recorded RGC spikes with $8{\times}8$ multielectrode array (MEA). The recorded signals were classified into four groups by distances between the stimulation and recording electrodes on MEA (200-400, 400-600, 600-800, $800-1000{\mu}m$). Fifty cathodic phase-$1^{st}$ biphasic current pulses (duration $500{\mu}s$, intensity 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, $60{\mu}A$) were applied at every 1 sec. We compared false positive error and false negative error in FB filter and TP-adopted FB filter. By implementing TP-adopted FB filter, short-latency spike can be detected better regarding sensitivity and specificity for detecting spikes regardless of the strength of stimulus and the distance between stimulus and recording electrodes.

  • This paper examines both MRP and JIT for reducing WIP(Work In Process). The MRP/JIT system is suitable for multi-model, small-production manufacturing comparies in Korea because of the short delivery distance and low risk of accident during delivery. The objective of this paper is to manage vendors effectively by informing supply points and quantity of parts of vendors with MRP and JIT.

  • This paper presents the analysis results predicted by the upper bound approach in the limit analysis of concrete incorporating the original plastic and crack sliding solutions for short high-strength concrete beams that varied the compressive strength of concrete, and the shear span-to-depth and vertical shear reinforcement ratios. The significance of the distance away from the support to define the location where the yield line starts and the properties of cracked concrete, particularly related to high-strength concrete, is identified.

  • This paper describes the development of new type arrester for 22.9kV class distribution lines, with polymer insulating materials applied to their housings. The new arrester employs silicone insulating material for its housing, instead of the conventional porcelain housing, aiming at reduction in size and weight and explosion proof against internal short circuit failure. And, since the design of sheds is not restricted. it is possible to provide a long surface leakage distance per strike length and improve anti-contamination performance.

  • Long chain dicationic ammonium salts were used successfully as phase transfer catalyst in the condensation reactions of aromatic aldehydes in water under ultrasonic irradiation for the first time. The quaternary salt having longer distance between the cation centers was more effective than the mono- and dicationic ones having short chain.

  • Iterative algorithms for detecting the collision of convex objects whose motion is characterized by a path in configuration space are described. They use as an essential substep the computation of the distance between the two objects. When the objects are polytopes in either two or three dimensional space, an algorithm is given which terminates in a finite number of iterations. It determines either that no collision occurs or the first collision point on the path. Extensive numerical experiments for practical problems show that the computational time is short and grows only linearly in the total number of vertices of the two polytopes.

  • There are many tunnels located apart short distance from each other in mountainous country like Korea. Serial tunnels are connected by snow shelter in many cases. This study presents some countermeasures against micro pressure wave at tile tunnel exit using snow shelter. Through 1/60 scale model laboratory test. we find that snow shelter with 3.6m slit and slit cover show the effect of reducing the micro pressure wave to about 60.5%.
