It is very important to investigate the hull response of a fishing vessel in waves to ensure the safe navigation and fishing operation in rough seas by preserving excellent seakeeping qualities. For this purpose, we measured pitching and rolling response of three fishing vessels in seas using real seas experimental measuring system and analyzed the data by statisticawl and spectral analyzing method. We compared the measured results with theoretical results to give the validity of measuring system and experimental results. From the result we know that a good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results are shown except following seas. But there are little difference between both results in the other deirection too, which are caused by the effects of short crested waves of real seas.

This study gives the vertical motion analysis in multi-directional irregular waves using a commercial code(MAXSURF v.16) based on linear strip theory for a training ship. To verify the commercial code prior to the analysis, we guarantees the reliability of this paper's results using the commercial code by comparing with the results(Flokstra, 1974) of same hull and experimental conditions on a Panamax container. The analysis conditions are Beaufort wind scale No. 5($\bar{T}=5.46$, $H_{1/3}=2m$) based on ITTC wave spectrum, encounter angle Head & bow seas($150^{\circ}$) and Froude number Fn=0.257. Finally, we calculates heave RAO, pitch RAO and obtains the result of ship's response spectra for heave and pitch motions. In the motion response spectrum under the multi-directional irregular waves, heave motion reacts slightly high in short-crested waves and pitch motion reacts high in long-crested waves.

In this paper, the lateral motions of a ship in the time domain are treated by applying the Impulse Response Function Technique. The acceleration, and displacement of a ship in the time domain are needed for the purpose of such automatic controls as the fire control system and the auto-pilot of ocean-going vessels, etc. The response Amplitude Operators of a ship are calculated by the Strip Method of Salvesen-Tuck-Faltinsen, and the Pierson-Moskowitz Spectrum multiplied by spreading function is used to represent the short crested ocean waves. The ocean wave elevations in the time domain are simulated according to the Method of Borgman. Finally the rudder effect is considered by simply adding the force and moment due to the rudder to the wave exciting force. And the results of lateral motions with and without rudder are shown.

Large size ships have a very flexible construction resulting in low resonance frequencies of the structural eigen-modes. This feature increases the dynamic response of the structure on short period waves (springing) and on impulsive wave loads (whipping). This dynamic response in its turn increases both the fatigue damage and the ultimate load on the structure; these aspects illustrate the importance of including the dynamic response into the design loads for these ship types. Experiments have been carried out using a segmented scaled model of a container ship in a Seakeeping Basin. This paper describes the development of the model for these experiments; the choice was made to divide the hull into six rigid segments connected with a flexible beam. In order to model the typical feature of the open structure of the containership that the shear center is well below the keel line of the vessel, the beam was built into the model as low as possible. The model was instrumented with accelerometers and rotation rate gyroscopes on each segment, relative wave height meters and pressure gauges in the bow area. The beam was instrumented with strain gauges to measure the internal loads at the position of each of the cuts. Experiments have been carried out in regular waves at different amplitudes for the same wave period and in long crested irregular waves for a matrix of wave heights and periods. The results of the experiments are compared to results of calculations with a linear model based on potential flow theory that includes the effects of the flexural modes. Some of the tests were repeated with additional links between the segments to increase the model rigidity by several orders of magnitude, in order to compare the loads between a rigid and a flexible model.
Several factors can be chosen for evaluating seakeeping performance, such as deck wetness, propeller racing, slamming, rolling, vertical acceleration and vertical bending moment, in consi-deration of the safety of human being, cargo and ship. In fact, there are few developments for an evalua-tion method of seakeepting performance correponding with each ship's characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to develop an quantitative evaluation method of seakeeping performance according to ship types. The scope and the method of this study are as follow. (1) Obtain each response amplitude of ship's motion in waves by Ordinary Strip Method and apply it to short-crested, irregular wave for random process of the factors on seakeeping performance. (2) Define the evaluation index, the dangerousness, the maximum dangerousness and the evaluation diagram. (3) Figure out the different characteristics according to ship types by computer simulation of evaluating seakeeping performance. (4) Adopt vertical acceleration and one of rolling or lateral acceleration as the factors on seakeeping performance by clarifying the correlation of stochastic process. This study developed an evaluation method coincident with each ship's characteristics, and suggested a device for application to actual ship. This method might be useful in developing the practical system of seakeeping performance in accordance with ship types. The ship models for computer simulation are 175m container ship types, 93m tranning ship HANARA as passenger ship type, 259m bulk-carrier type and 164m pure car-carrier type.

A reliability analysis model is developed for evaluating the crest freeboard of vertical breakwaters based on the concepts of maximum overtopping volume of individual wave. A reliability function is formulated by defining the margin of admissible overtopping volume and maximum overtopping volume that is depend on the number of overtopping waves, dimensionless crest freeboard, and mean overtopping discharge. In addition, Level III MCS technique is straightforwardly suggested by which the related empirical parameters to reliability function can be considered to be random variables with the wide range of different uncertainties. It can be possible to calculate the probabilities of failure according to the relative crest freeboard with the variations of the incident wave directions, the structural types of vertical breakwaters, and admissible overtopping volumes in conditions of the long and short crested-waves.

One of the most important missons that are imposed on merchant ship at sea is to accomplish the safe transportation of cargo loaded. Recently, a study on the seakeeping performance has been carried out on the development of evaluation system related to the synthetic safety of a ship at sea. The seakeeping performance is the ship's ability sailing at, and executing its misson against adverse environmental factors successfully and safely. Until now, however, there has not been any method of quantitative evaluation on the dynamic safety of the ship's cargo loaded. In this regards, this paper has introduced the evaluation method of dynamic safety of the ship's cargo. In order to evaluate the dynamic safety of cargo, the vertical and lateral acceleration which causes the collapse, racking and local structure failure of cargo was adopted as the evaluation factors in the ship's motions. The response amplitude of ship's motions in regular waves is manipulated by NSM (New Strip Method) on a given 2,700 TEU full container vessel under the wind forces of 7, 8 and 9 Beaufort scale. Each response of ship's motions induced by NSM was applied to short-crested irregular waves for stochastic process on evaluation factors and then vertical and lateral acceleration of each cargo was compared with significant amplitude of each acceleration. A representative dangerous factor was determined by comparing permissible values of stacking and racking forces occurred typically to the vertical and transverse directions with the container strength required on ISO 1496 at the positions of forecastle, poop and ship's midship respectively. Through the occurrence probability of the determined factor by Rayleigh's probability density function, the dangerousness which limits loads on container's side wall as an evaluation was applied in judging of the danger of the ship's cargo loaded.
