Passive control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing slotted plates and a porous plate over a cavity has been carried out. Effect of various slot configurations on the characteristics of the interaction has been observed. Pitot/wall surface pressure distributions and flow visualizations including Schlieren images, kerosene-lampblack tracings and interference fringe patterns over a thin oil-film have been obtained at the downstream of the shock interactions. For the streamwise-slot configuration, a local higher pitot pressure was noticed at the downstream of the interaction as compared with the case of no control, however, not much improvement in pitot pressure was observed for the spanwise-slot configuration.
A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving gas-liquid two-phase flow is proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem. The present method employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. By applying the homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model, the present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation and large density changes. The speed of sound for gas-liquid two-phase media is derived on the basis of thermodynamic relations and compared with that by eigenvalues. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and exact solutions are provided and discussed.

We studied attenuation characteristics of shock waves induced by a donor charge and the sensitivity of an acceptor for optimal design of a TBI (Through-bulkhead initiator). The attenuation behavior of shock waves was studied by measuring free surface velocity using a VISAR (Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector), and the sensitivity of the acceptor explosives was analyzed via SSGT (Small Scale Gap Test). It was found that the acceptor sensitivity obtained by the SSGT may be inappropriate for the design of the small-scale explosive devices such as TBI due to the different shock duration time.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of the Deflagration to Detonation Transition (DDT) of flame acceleration by a shock wave in combustible gas mixture. A model consisting of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations is used. The effects of viscosity, thermal conduction, species diffusion, and chemical reactions are included. Using this model, the generation of hot spots by repeated shock and flame interaction in front and back of flame and the change of detonation occurrence by various shock intensities (Ms=1.1, 1.2, 1.3) are studied. The simulations show that as the incident shock intensity increases, the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability becomes stronger and DDT occurrence time is reduced.

An experimental study was carried out to control a shock-induced boundary layer separation by utilizing the supersonic sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator. High-speed schlieren, surface flow visualization, wall pressure measurement and precise Pitot tube measurement were applied to observe the influences of the location and the supply pressure of the fluidic oscillator on the characteristics of the oblique-shock-induced boundary layer separation. The characteristics of the separation control by the present supersonic fluidic oscillator was quantitatively analyzed by comparing with a conventional control method utilizing an air-jet vortex generator.

A projectile when passes through a moving shock wave, experiences drastic changes in the aerodynamic forces as it moves from a high-pressure region to a low pressure region. These sudden changes in the forces are attributed to the wave structures produced by the projectile-flow field interaction, and are responsible for destabilizing the trajectory of the projectile. These flow fields are usually encountered in the vicinity of the launch tube exit of a ballistic range facility, thrusters, retro-rocket firings, silo injections, missile firing ballistics, etc. In earlier works, projectile was assumed in a steady flow field when the computations start and the blast wave maintains a constant strength. However, in real situations, the projectile produces transient effects in the flow field which have a deterministic effect on the overtaking process. In the present work, the overtaking problem encountered in the near-field of muzzle guns is investigated for several projectile Mach numbers. Computations have been carried out using a chimera mesh scheme. The results show that, the unsteady wave structures are completely different from that of the steady flow field where the blast wave maintains a constant strength, and the supersonic and subsonic overtaking conditions cannot be distinguished by identifying the projectile bow shock wave only.
The attitude control of an aircraft is usually fulfilled by means of thrusters at high altitudes. Therefore, the possibility of using also aerodynamic surfaces would produce the advantage of reducing the amount of fuel for the thrusters to be loaded on board. For this purpose, Zuppardi already considered some aerodynamic problems linked to the use of a wing flap in a previous paper. A NACA 0010 airfoil with a trailing edge flap of 35% of the chord, in the range of angle of attack 0-40 deg and flap deflections up to 30 deg was investigated. Computer tests were carried out in hypersonic, rarefied flow by a direct simulation Monte Carlo code at the altitudes of 65 and 85 km of Earth Atmosphere. The present work continues this subject, considering the same airfoil and free stream conditions but two flap extensions of 45% and 25% of the chord and two flap deflections of 15 and 30 deg. The main purpose is to compare the influence of the flap dimension with that of the flap deflection. The present analysis is carried out in terms of: 1) percentage variation of the global aerodynamic coefficients with respect to the no-flap configuration, 2) increment of pressure and heat flux on the airfoil lower surface due to the Shock Wave-Shock Wave Interaction (SWSWI) with respect to the same quantities with no SWSWI or in no-flap configuration, 3) flap hinge moment. Issues 2) and 3) are important for the design of the mechanical and thermal protection system and of the flap actuator, respectively. Under the above mentioned test and geometrical conditions, the flap deflection is aerodynamically more effective than the flap extension, because it involves higher variation of the aerodynamic coefficients. However, tests verify that a smaller deflection angle involves the advantage of a smaller increment of pressure and heat flux on the airfoil lower surface, due to SWSWI, as well as a smaller hinge moment.

In this study, the affect of mounting axisymmetrical supersonic inlet to airfoil, which has 65 degree swept angle was numerically investigated. The parameter for this calculation are tree stream Mach number M=2.0 and 2.5, the distance between inlet spike and airfoil lower surface $L_{sw}$/$R_{cowl}$ = 1.21-1.54 and angle of attack to the airfoil 0-4. The mass capture ratio improved 3points in M=2.0 condition and 1points in M=2.5 while the mass capture ratio without airfoil surface was 57% and 71 % for each case. These are the result from increase of density and change of velocity deflection by the shock wave structure formed between inlet and airfoil surface. On the other hand, the distortion of Mach number at cowl lip plane increased by 13% in M=2.0, 3% in M=2.5 condition. The effects of the angle attack on the mass capture ratio is greater than that of the shock wave interaction between inlet and cowl, but the effects to the distortion is smaller in the range of this calculation condition. In the condition of M=2.0 with 4 degrees of angle of attack, inlet distortion of Mach number is mainly caused by the affects of the shock wave interaction between inlet and airfoil surface, while the largest angle of the velocity vector in the radial direction at cowl lip plane is caused by the affect of angle of attack. This large velocity vector made the flow inside the cowl subsonic and caused spillage, which interfere with the boundary layer of airfoil surface.
This paper is the follow-on of a previous paper by the author where it was pointed out that the forthcoming, manned exploration missions to Mars, by means of complex geometry spacecraft, involve the study of phenomena like shock wave-boundary layer interaction and shock wave-shock wave interaction also along the entry path in Mars atmosphere. The present paper focuses the chemical effects both in the shock layer and on the surface of a test body along the Mars orbital entry and compares these effects with those along the Earth orbital re-entry. As well known, the Mars atmosphere is almost made up of Carbon dioxide whose dissociation energy is even lower than that of Oxygen. Therefore, although the Mars entry is less energized than the Earth re-entry, one can expect that the effects of chemistry on aerodynamic quantities, both in the shock layer and on a test body surface, are different from those along the Earth re-entry. The study has been carried out computationally by means of a direct simulation Monte Carlo code, simulating the nose of an aero-space-plane and using, as free stream parameters, those along the Mars entry and Earth re-entry trajectories in the altitude interval 60-90 km. At each altitude, three chemical conditions have been considered: 1) gas non reactive and non-catalytic surface, 2) gas reactive and non-catalytic surface, 3) gas reactive and fully-catalytic surface. The results showed that the number of reactions, both in the flow and on the nose surface, is higher for Earth and, correspondingly, also the effects on the aerodynamic quantities.
The rock excavation work by doing blasting breaks the rock by using a shock pressure and gas pressure produced when explosive explodes and the shock wave by shock pressure propagated three-dimensionally from the exploding center is on the decrease notably to the distance, however, $0.5{\sim}20%$ of energy produced by blasting propagates into the ground outside a crack zone by the shape of an elastic wave, on the ground it appears as a ground vibration with a seismic amplitude and a seismic cycle, it is called a blasting vibration. on the other side, what propagated in the air is called a blasting sound. The blasting sound of both means the things which the shock sound within the range the audible frequency($20{\sim}20000Hz$) of the elastic wave in the air influences the response system of a human body, it doesn't harm physically to any structures but influences unreasonably a work accomplishment, such as a work discontinuance due to the outbreak of a public complaint by a mental pain, reduction of a blasting scale, etc.. So, this study is examined at about 20 sites on the installation time and method of soundproofing facilities for reduction of the sound accompanied with a tunnel blasting work.
