Shock focusing is related with explosive release of shock wave energy on a narrow spot in a short duration of time triggering a spontaneous high pressure near the focal point. It is well known that reflection of planar incident shock wave from the metallic concave mirror such as ellipsoidal, paraboloidal or hemispherical cavities will focus on a focal point. We intend to improve the computational results using a wave propagation algorithm and to resolve the mushroom-like structure. For computation of the concave cavity flow, it is not easy to use a single-block mesh because of the many singular points in geometry and coordinates. We have employed a uniform Cartesian-grid method for the wave propagation algorithm.
Recently micro shock tube is extensively being used in many diverse fields of engineering applications but the detailed flow physics involved in it is hardly known due to high Knudsen number and strong compressibility effects. Unlike the macro shock tube, the surface area to volume ratio for a micro shock tube is very large. This unique effect brings many complexities into the flow physics that makes the micro shock tube different compared with the macro shock tube. In micro shock tube, the inter- molecular forces of working gas can play an important role in specifying the flow characteristics of the unsteady shock wave flow which is essentially generated in all kinds of shock tubes. In the present study, a CFD method was used to predict and visualize the unsteady shock wave flows using the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations, furnished with the no-slip and slip wall boundary conditions. Maxwell's slip equations were used to mathematically model the shock movement at high Knudsen number. The present CFD results show that the propagation speed of the shock wave is directly proportional to the initial pressure and diameter of micro shock tube.

The phenomenology of shock loading effects in brittle mass has been of interest to researchers and engineers. The shock loading as blasting causes strong stress waves in the structures. Discontinuous faces due to shock waves interrupt the tensile stress wave propagation and reflect the stress wave propagation. To predict the fracturing behavior of brittle mass, it is required for the numerical method that can analyze the colliding and slipping behavior of discontinuous faces and the wave propagation in the mass, simultaneously In this study, the wave propagation in the brittle materials is analyzed using the modified distinct element method to be able to predict the behavior of discontinuous structures. The behavior of an unsupported bar subjected to loading at the end is analyzed to verify the rigid body motion of a bar and the relative displacement in the bar. The colliding behavior of two bars is analyzed to investigate the propagation of stress waves in the bar. The fracturing behavior of a bar due to impact loading is analyzed to investigate the propagation of stress waves in the bar with and without the discontinuous faces. The applicability of the modified distinct element method to the wave propagation problems is investigated.
When a shock wave arrives at an open end of tube, an impulse wave is discharged from the tube exit and complicated flow is formed near tube exit. The flow field is influenced by the cross-sectional geometry of tube exit, such as circular, square, rectangular, trapezoid and etc. In the current study, three-dimensional propagation characteristics of impulse wave discharged from the tube exit with non-circular cross section are numerically investigated using a CFD method. Total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme is used to solve the three-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Euler equations. Computations are performed for the Mach numbers of the incident shock wave $M_{s}$ below 1.5. The results obtained show that the peak pressure of the impulse wave and propagation directivity depends on the cross-sectional geometry of tube exit and the Mach number of incident shock wave.
Two-phase flow of liquid and gas through pipe lines are frequently encountered in nuclear power plant or industrial facility. Pressure waves which can be generated by a valve operation or any other cause in pipe lines propagate through the two-phase flow, often leading to severe noise and vibration problems or fatigue failure of pipe line system. It is of practical importance to predict the propagation characteristics of the pressure waves for the safety design for the pipe line. In the present study, a theoretical analysis is performed to understand the propagation characteristics of a weak shock wave in a bubbly flow. A wave equation is developed using a small perturbation method to analyze the weak shock wave through a bubbly flow with comparably low void fractions. It is known that the elasticity of pipe and void fraction significantly affect the propagation speed of shock wave, but the frequency of relaxation oscillation which is generated behind the shock wave is not strongly influenced by the elasticity of pipe. The present analytical results are in close agreement with existing experimental data.

Multi-channel DAQ system was developed to predict propagation characteristic of the shock wave generated by linear explosive. The system can generate shock wave from 1000 points per second using a pulsed laser and simultaneously obtain the shock wave signals using 15 chanel contact sensor. The system is expected to pridict the propagation characteristics of various linear explosive-induced pyroshock because it can be used with a user-defined time delay that corresponds to detonation speed of the linear explosive.
An analytical method is presented to solve the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere subjected to thermal shock and electric excitation. Exact expressions for the transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and electric potentials in the piezoelectric hollow sphere are obtained by means of Hankel transform, Laplace transform, and inverse transforms. Using Hermite non-linear interpolation method solves Volterra integral equation of the second kind involved in the exact expression, which is caused by interaction between thermo-elastic field and thermo-electric field. Thus, an analytical solution for the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere is obtained. Finally, some numerical results are carried out, and may be used as a reference to solve other transient coupled problems of thermo-electro-elasticity.
Shock-focusing concave reflectors can have parabolic, circular or elliptic cross-sections. They produce effectively a very high pressure at the focusing point. In the past, many optical images have been obtained on shock focusing via experiments. Measurement of field variables is, however, difficult in the experiment. Using the wave propagation algorithm and the Cartesian embedded boundary method, we have successfully obtained numerical Schlieren images that appear very much like the experimental results. In addition, we obtained the detailed field variables such as pressure, velocity, density and vorticity in the unsteady domain. The present numerical results have made it possible to understand the shock focusing phenomenon in more detail than before.

This experimental study describes the propagation characteristics of the impulse noise emitted from the exit of a straight pipe attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The sound pressure level and directivity of the impulse noise propagating from the exit of pipe with several different diameters are measured in the far sound fold for the range of the incident shock wave Mach number between 1.07 and 1.26. The experimental results showed that the peak values of impulse noises had a strong dependance on the exit diameter of a pipe and the shock wave Mach number. The impulse noise had the directivity propagating toward to the pipe axis and the characteristics of inverse square law of propagation distance. Moreover, it was shown that the one-third octave band SPL of impulse noise was almost constant regardless of the frequency band.
