  • The surface cleaning method based on the laser-induced breakdown (LIB) of gas and subsequent plasma and shock wave generation can remove small particles from solid surfaces. In the laser shock cleaning (LSC) process, a high-power laser pulse induces optical breakdown of the ambient gas above the solid surface covered with contaminant particles. The subsequently created shock wave followed by a high-speed flow stream detaches the particles. In this work, a novel surface cleaning process using laser-induced breakdown of liquid is introduced and demonstrated. LIB of a micro liquid jet increases the shock wave intensity and thus removes smaller particle than the conventional LSC method. Experiments demonstrate that the cleaning force and cleaning efficiency are also increased significantly by this method.

  • The objective of this study was to examine and compare to transient response to quantitative and hydraulic shocks which produce equal changes in mass rate of organic feed in aerobic fixed-film process. The general experimental approach was to operate the system at several growth rates under steady-state(pre-shock) conditions, then to apply step changes during day 3 in dilution rate(hydraulic shock) , or feed concentration(Quantitative shock) at the same organic mass loading rate. Performance was assessed in both the transient state and the new steady-state (post- shock). Shock load of different type did not produced equivalent disruptions of effluent quality for equal increases in mass loading rate. Based on effluent concentrations, a hydraulic and a Quantitative shock at the same mass loading caused equal increase in total effluent COD, but the increase was primarily a result of suspended solids the hydraulic shock and COD in the quantitative shock. The time which effluent COD came to peak values were about 32~48 hours at the low organic loads and 52 ~ 72 hours at the high organic loads, respectively A quantitative shock produced a much greater increase in effluent COD than did a hydraulic shock at the same mass loading. Mean and peak values of effluent concentration weve increased in 2.8~4.2 times at low organic loading rate, 5.2~6.6 times at the high organic loading rate, respectively. Key words : Aerobic fixed-film reactor, Quantitative shock, hydraulic shock, mass loading rate.

  • A numerical study is carried out to examine the ignition and propagation process of detonation wave in SCRam-accelerator operating in superdetonative mode. The time accurate solution of Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations for chemically reacting flow is obtained by using the fully implicit numerical method and the higher order upwind scheme. As a result, it is clarified that the ignition process has its origin to the hot temperature region caused by shock-boundary layer interaction at the shoulder of projectile. After the ignition, the oblique detonation wave is generated and propagates toward the inlet while constructing complex shock-shock interaction and shock-boundary layer interaction. Finally, a standing oblique detonation wave is formed at the conical ramp.

  • In this study, nanocrystalline Cu-Ni bulk materials with various compositions were cold compacted by a shock compaction method using a single-stage gas gun system. Since the oxide layers on powder surface disturbs bonding between powder particles during the shock compaction process, each nanopowder was hydrogen-reduced to remove the oxide layers. X-ray peak analysis shows that hydrogen reduction successfully removed the oxide layers from the nano powders. For the shock compaction process, mixed powder samples with various compositions were prepared using a roller mixer. After the shock compaction process, the density of specimens increased up to 95% of the relative density. Longitudinal cross-sections of the shock compacted specimen demonstrates that a boundary between two powders are clearly distinguished and agglomerated powder particles remained in the compacted bulk. Internal crack tended to decrease with an increase in volumetric ratio of nano Cu powders in compacted bulk, showing that nano Cu powders has a higher coherency than nano Ni powders. On the other hand, hardness results are dominated by volume fraction of the nano Ni powder. The crystalline size of the shock compacted bulk materials was greatly reduced from the initial powder crystalline size since the shock wave severely deformed the powders.

  • In this study, the effect of laser shock peening on a titanium alloy was modeled using different confinements. Both liquid and solid confinement could be applied to laser shock peening, and solid confinement provided a dry laser shock peening process, which has the advantage of a corrosion-free effect. When a different confinement was applied to laser shock peening, a different peening effect would be expected. In our study, the peening effect was numerically modeled and simulated. The main effect of different confinements was a change in the impedances required to confine a shock wave from a plasma. The impedances were assumed with respect to different materials. Johnson-Cook's plastic deformation modeling was applied to the simulation. The strains and residual stresses were calculated to evaluate the confinement effects. When solid confinement was used, the residual stress increased by 60-85%, compared to the case of liquid confinement. However, the depth of the residual stress was slightly deeper. The simulated results could be applied to estimate the peening effect when a different confinement was used in the laser shock peening process.

  • The objective of study was to examine to transient response of hydraulic shock loading in activated sludge process for treatment of municipal sewage. The general experiment approach was to operate the system under steady-state(pre-shock), then to apply step changes during 24hours in fourfold hydraulic shock loading at the same organic loading. Performance was assessed in both the transient state and the new steady-state(post-shock). Three bench scale activated sludge reactors were operated to investigate the effect of fourfold hydraulic shock loading on TSS and COD removal efficiency. In activated sludge reactors operated with 13hours and 7hours of HRT, effluent quality of all reactors was not changed for few effects, and also showed no foaming and no sludge bulking. Those results are the same as sludge withdrawn reactors. The effect of fourfold hydraulic shock loading on the activated sludge reactors operated with 3hours of HRT was most severe. The effluent quality was deteriorated significantly and generate foaming in reactors. Less than 24hours after the fourfold shock loading applied, the activated sludge system seemed to attain a new steady-state condition as show by effluent.

  • A shock tube technique was developed in which a freely falling droplets column produced by an ultrasonic atomizer was ignited behind reflected shock. In the present study, the effects of turbulent mixing on the ignition delay of a cetane was decided, also, ignition process was investigated. For the purpose of disturbance of droplets column and mixing, authors installed turbulent lattice in shock tube. Usually, the ignition delay is so called Arrhenius plot which found break point in the Arrhenius plot on the high temperature side. The rate of misfiring increased rapidly below 1080K, but ignition took place from 838k and luminous flame was seen to spread over the whole section by turbulent lattice. Length, from end plate to turbulent lattice, was varied with 60,40,20mm. Also, ignition process was detected by Photo transistor. As a result, it was found that physical factors changed ignition delay greatly and turbulent mixing had a considerable effects in the ignition process.

  • In this paper, a random shock model for a system is considered. Each shock arriving according to a Poisson process decreases the state of the system by a random amount. A repairman arriving according to another Poisson process of rate $\lambda$ repairs the system only if the state of the system is below a threshold $\alpha$. After assigning various costs to the system, we calculate the long-run average cost and show that there exist a unique value of arrival rate $\lambda$ and a unique value of threshold $\alpha$ which minimize the long-run average cost per unit time.

  • Shock tube flow measurement has been often troubled with a finite opening time of diaphragm, but there is no systematic work to investigate its effect on the shock tube flow. In the present study, both the experimental and computational works have been performed on the shock tube flows at low pressure ratios. The computational analysis has been performed using the two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations, based upon a TVD MUSCL finite difference scheme. It is known that the present computational results reproduce the experimental data with good accuracy and simulate successfully the process of diaphragm opening as a function of time. The concept of an imaginary center is introduced to specify the non-centered expansion wave due to a finite opening time of diaphragm. The results obtained show that the diaphragm opening time is reduced as the initial pressure ratio of shock tube increases, leading to the effect of a finite opening time of diaphragm to be more remarkable at low pressure ratios.
