  • Since 1996, the document exchange method by EDI has been introduced in port and logistics industries in Korea to enhance the declaration activities to the Pusan Port Authority and Customs. In spite of these efforts, users such as shipping companies, shipping agents, and freight forwarders have complained the inconvenience of using EDI systems. The major reasons can be summarized as follows: repetitional EDI transfer, too much transfer time, inconvenient EDI software, and problems on message receiving confirmation. Furthermore, EDI has been used only for transmitting messages. To solve these problems, this study has adopted the integration system by applying the concept of SCM to logistics system by XML/EDl. In the view of SCM, the existing EDI has some problems because its role is only to transmit the messages. This paper is to suggest how current EDI systems in Port and logistics sector has to be chanced by Introducing SCM. The integration system gives us such advantages as accuracy of cargo data, integration of processes among firms, and keeping the trace of cargo.

  • With the rapid development of global economic and trade, the ports in the North-east Asia region have developed rapidly. Ocean shipping plays an irreplaceable role in China's foreign trade. Improvement of China's economy and continuous increase of trade in North-East Asia have made China as the number one in the world in container transport. Tianjin port which is the biggest international trade port in North-east China. Tianjin Binhai New District has incorporated in (CPC Central Committee on the outline of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for national economic and social development proposals) which had adopted by The Fifth Plenary Session of the 16th CPC Central Committee. However, the competitions between ports are getting intense, the construction of Northeast Asia shipping center is in the ascendant, which bring new opportunity and challenge to the development of Tianjin port logistics. Therefore, Tianjin should according to its characteristics, integrating port resources, exert great efforts in developing port logistics, thus promoting regional economic development. Therefore, it is necessary to make the main study on the development strategy of Tianjin port logistics.

  • Special logistics, such as steel coils or steel plates, are being shipped and deployed depending on experienced personnel. Therefore, there is a great possibility of accidents due to immaturity by human error or lack of experience. There is a need to prevent the possibility of such an accident in advance, to apply security requirements required for special logistics, to ensure the stability of cargo, and to operate an management system to check the correct loading list. In addition, accurate shipping inspection is necessary to balance the ship. This paper analyzes the problems of shipping inspection currently being implemented and proposes a web-based port special logistics shipping inspection and balancing operation system to improve it.

  • Information technology has been transforming the relationship between shippers and carriers, but an unresolved question remains: what is the relative importance to shippers of service versus cost benefits of e-logistics solutions? This research develops and empirically tests a model to determine how Internet-based logistical operations in international shipping impact on the relative importance of cost versus service benefits to shippers. Contrary to expectations, results show that shippers perceived cost benefits from well-designed web sites, undoubtedly a consequence of perceptions that multi-function portals with ease of access contributed to savings in time and money. Another result was the confirmation of the positive effects of cargo tracing and bill of lading issuance on service-related factors. Finally, this study draws attention to the need for improvements in on-line booking capabilities and development of a comprehensive common portal; issues that must be addressed for shipping lines to succeed in an increasingly competitive e-logistics market.

  • As the importance of container ships in maritime transport grows, the demand and supply for such vessels have been increasing. To reduce costs and improve operational efficiency, container shipping lines have formed shipping alliances, engaging in joint operations and vessel-sharing arrangements. Since the establishment of these alliances in 1995, they have evolved in various forms. In 2024, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd announced the formation of a new shipping alliance, the 'Gemini Cooperation,' set to begin in February 2025, signaling a potential realignment of shipping alliances. This shift will significantly impact operations of ports like Busan. In the case of Busan Port, the inability of a single terminal to accommodate large shipping alliance vessels has led to an increased reliance on multiple terminals, which in turn has caused an increase of inter-terminal transportation cost and a decrease in operational ef iciency. Therefore, this paper aimed to examine changes in shipping alliances since 2012, analyze the current usage of container terminals at Busan Port, and propose strategies for efficient port operations in response to expected realignment of shipping alliances.

  • In the light of necessary analysis on the cooperation and development between ports and shipping line, and the characteristic of cooperation between international ports and shipping lines, the article analyses the operating strategies in actual shipping lines benefits to the cooperation between ports and shipping lines. After all-round analysis on the cooperation and development between ports and shipping lines, the author presents the running model of ports and shipping lines in Far East, which is the integration of operation between ports and shipping lines (namely integration of logistics service network). • This paper aims to understand and analyze the mega-trends such as trends towards larger vessels due to an increasing trade volume, accordingly fewer port calls, strategic alliances and M&A Increasing degree of concentration through M&A activities in shipping industry results in a decreasing number of shipping finns with an increasing share in the world shipping capacity. But competition is strongly increasing on main trunk routes. Therefore, shipping concentration directly leads to further concentration of port traffic in fewer and larger ports with an increasing competition among neighboring ports.

  • The objective of this paper is to analyze the equipment combination of stevedoring system at port container terminal. In general, the productivity of container terminal is evaluated by productivity of container cranes at apron, but there are other equipment such as transport vehicles and yard cranes. Therefore, a method that can estimate the optimal equipment combination of stevedoring system in container terminal is required. We perform various simulation experiment and analyze equipment combination to improve the productivity. From the application of the case study, we demonstrated the savings effect using mean waiting time rates by the equipment combination.

In spite of these efforts, users such as shipping companies, shipping agents, and freight forwarders have complained the inconvenience of using EDI systems. The major reasons can be summarized as too much transfer time, inconvenient EDI software, and problems on message receiving confirmation. To solve these problems, although we have developed an Internet based EDI system for Port-MIS users, we have failed its implementation practically for the short of Governments readiness, the complexity of systems and separation with in-house systems. So, the writers have changed the direction of research to applying the concept of SCM to logistics system by XML/EDI. In this Paper, the prototype systems to integrate processes of shipping company, Port Authority, Customs and stevedoring company will be suggested. The new method of EDI gives us advantages, which are the accuracy of cargo data and integration of processes among firms and keeping the service of cargo trace.

  • Gate operations are very important as they are the starting point for export containers and the end point for import containers as far as checking and control exercised by terminal operators are concerned. The objective of this paper is to propose the design of separated gate system in order to reduce the truck turnaround time and to distribute the truck traffic volume in port container terminal. Because of a lot of container load and unload within short term, many trucks have to pass the gate at a time. This study suggests the separated gate system as an efficient design for gate operation considering integration of two individual berth.
