A computer code has been developed to simulate three-dimensional viscous flows over a ship-stern. Semi-elliptic forms of Reynolds equations are adopted and numerically generated body-fitted coordinate systems are used to resolve complex geometries of the ship-hull. A standard form of $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is adopted for evaluation of the Reynolds stresses. Turbulent flows on a model with 3:1 elliptic sections and the SSPA-720 container ship model are predicted by using the code. Calculated pressure distributions of hull-surfaces and mean velocity distributions are generally in good agreements with measured values in wind-tunnels. But turbulent kinetic energies tend to be over-estimated near the stern in comparison with measured data.

The structural intensity analysis, which calculates the magnitude and direction of vibrational energy flow from vibratory velocity and internal force at any point of a structure, can give information on dominant transmission paths, positions of sources and sinks of vibration energy. This paper presents a numerical simulation system for structural intensity analysis and visualization to apply for ship structures based on the finite element method. The system consists of a general purpose finite element analysis program MSC/Nastran, its pre- and post-processors and an in-house program module to calculate structural intensity using the model data and its forced vibration analysis results. Using the system, the structural intensity analysis for a 4,100 TEU container carrier is carried out to visualize structural intensity fields on the global ship structure and to investigate dominant energy flow paths from harmonic excitation sources to superstructure at resonant hull girder and superstructure modes.

Analysis has been made of the anti-corrosive property of organic coating under the shear stress of the flow by means of AC impedance method. Marine anti-corrosive painted panels were placed in the water channel with varying flow rate, thereby experiencing varying flow shear stress on the surfaces. The velocities of the salt water were ranged from 1.48 to 5.2 m/s and the coating thickness of from $70{\mu}m\;to\;140{\mu}m$. For all coating thicknesses investigated, the poorer anti-corrosive property and the lower adhesion strength have been found for the higher shear stress. It has been found that the shear stress accelerates the aging of organic marine coatings.

Various types of nozzles have been used to cope with fire in ships. However, in Korea, precise nozzles that perform fine spraying function are required for fire fighting in case of fire in a ship, and most of these nozzles depend on imports. Therefore, in this study, we developed various types of nozzles to develop the water spray nozzle for evolving fire in the engine room of the ship, and developed an optimal nozzle through flow analysis and fire test. For this purpose, we selected the materials that can satisfy the characteristics of existing nozzle materials and developed the design technology and processing technology in the nozzle considering fluid flow to achieve optimal water spraying performance. In order to develop an optimal nozzle, the flow through the finite element analysis was first analyzed and the nozzle was manufactured. As a result of flow analysis of the developed nozzle, the maximum velocity at the outlets of four holes at 0.3 MPa was about 3m/s and about 0.15 MPa. In addition, when the pressure at the inlet was 1.8 MPa, it showed the outlet speed of about 18m/s and a pressure of 1.2 MPa.

The structural intensity analysis, which calculates vibration energy flow from vibratory velocity and internal force of a structure, can give information on sources' power, dominant transmission path and sink of vibration energy. In this study, we present a system for structural intensity analysis and visualization to apply for anti-vibration design of ship structures. The system calculates structural intensity from the results of forced vibration analysis and visualize the intensity using a general purpose finite element analysis program MSC/Nastran and its pre- and post-processor program. To demonstrate the analysis and visualization capability of the presented system, we show and discuss the results of structural intensity analysis for a cross-stiffened plate and a 70,500 OW crude oil tanker

In this study, an experimental investigation has been made of the applicability of outer-layer vertical blades to real ship model. After first devised by Hutchins and Choi (2003), the outer-layer vertical blades demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing total drag of flat plate (Park et al., 2011) with maximum drag reduction of 9.6%. With a view to assessing the effect in the flow around a ship, the arrays of outer-layer vertical blades have been installed onto the side bottom and flat bottom of a 300k KVLCC model. A series of towing tank test has been carried out to investigate resistance (CTM) reduction efficiency and improvement of stern wake distribution with varying geometric parameters of the blades array. The installation of vertical blades led to the CTM reduction of 2.15~2.76% near the service speed. The nominal wake fraction was affected marginally by the blades array and the axial velocity distribution tended to be more uniform by the blades array.

In this study, the assumed mode method using characteristic polynomials of Timoshenko beam is applied to the free vibration analysis for the stiffened plate of ship tank side in contact with water. The hydro-elastic effect of the fluid-structure interaction is considered by fluid velocity potential, derived from boundary conditions for fluid and structure, and utilized in the calculation of added mass matrix using assumed modes. To verify the validity and effectiveness of the presented method, free vibration analysis for the stiffened plates in contact with finite and infinite fluids have been carried out and its results were compared with those obtained by a general purpose FEA software.

The initial hull form of a 100 tan, 45 knot class high-speed craft is newly developed. The resistance performances are investigated using a model test at high speed in a circulating water channel. The effect of the initial trim is studied together. Wave patterns are observed to clarify the relationship between the resistance performance and the wave characteristics. It can be found that the initial trim plays a role in increasing the resistance performance above a certain velocity.
This paper presents theoretical formulations and numerical computations for predicting first-and second-order hydrodynamic force on a ship advvancing in waves. The theoretical formulation leads to linearized radiation and diffration problems solving the three-dimensional Green function integral equations over the mean wetted body surface. Green function representing a translating and pulsating source potantial for infinite water depth is used. In order to solve integral equations for three dimentional flows using Green function efficiently, the Hoff's method is adopted for numerical calculation of the Green function. Based on the first-order solution, the mean seconder-order forces and moments are obtained by directly integrating second-order pressure over the mean wetted body surface. The calculated items are carried out for analyzing the seakeeping characteristics of Series 60. The calculated items are hydrodynamic coefficients, wave exciting forces, frequency response functions and addd resistance in waves.

This paper proposes SDINS(strapdown inertial navigation system) transfer alignment method for vertical launcher using an adaptive filter in the ship. First, the velocity and attitude matching transfer alignment method is designed to align SDINS for vertical launcher. Second, the adaptive filter is employed to estimate measurement noise variance in real time using the residual of measurements. Because it is difficult to decide measurement noise variance when noise properties of the ship SDINS are changed. To verify its performance, it is compared with the EKF(Extended Kalman filter) using uncorrect measurement variance. The monte carlo simulation results show that proposed method is more effective in estimating attitude angle than EKF.
