  • The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of fashion leaders in relation to attitude toward change and socioeconomic level among Dae Gu woman as well as among rural women living on the suburbs of Dae Gu: and to compare the characteristics of these urban women in a mass society with the rural women living in a traditional society. Measures selected for this study consisted of the Schrank Fashion Opinion Leadership Inventory(1973), the Schrank ana Sugawara Attitudes Toward Change Inventory(1977), and socioeconomic level. The fashion Innovation Inventory was developed by author which consisted of a list of clothing and accessory items selected after surveys to local stores, campus, and main streets, and study of fashion magazines for the current seasons. The data from 280 respondents were analyzed by Pearson corrleation coefficients, analysis of variance, and t-test. The results were as followers : 1) A significant relationship was found between fashion leadership and socioeconomic level for both urban and rural women. High attitude toward change was significantly related to high fashion innovativeness and high fashion opinion leadership among the urban groups. re significant relationship was found between fashion opinion leadership and attitude toward change among the rural sample. 2) A significant difference was found in attitude toward change scores of four urban sub-sample groups : fashion innovators, fashion opinion leaders, fashion innovative communicators(who exhibit high scores on both fashion innovativeness and fashion opinion leader-ship), and non-fashion innovative communicators. No significant difference was found in attitude toward change scores of four rural sub-sample groups. No significant differences were found in socioeconomic level of four sub-sample groups for both urban and rural women.

  • Floating debris was observed using a training ship, KAYA, of Pukyong National University with cruising speed of about 10-12 knot during July 12~25, 2003. The area sampled was the East Sea enclosed by 3 nations, namely, Korea, Japan and Russia, and was divided into 68 unit segments on survey routes [Fig. 1]. Debris fabrication materials were categorized with 6 items, e.g., man-made or natural wood items, paper and cardboard, nylon rope, styrofoam, vinyl and plastic, floating metal and glass containers. All identified items within $100{\pm}10 m$ wide band were recorded but ignored if beyond this boundary. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The average numbers of debris per unit area, $1km^2$, were found as 16.3 pieces (items) in the sea. 2. The highest densities of numbers, $32.3pieces/km^2$, were discovered in vicinity of the Oki strait of Japan, area of 'NEK' in Fig. 1. 3. Especially, styrofoam item only was composed to 63.6% of all in the sea of 'SD', located in the southern part of Dokdo Island, Korea. The item seems to be derive from the Southern Sea of Korea. 4. Therefore, comparing the distribution of debris numbers (the results of above 2 and 3) with flow patterns of Kuroshio currents, it was shown that their relation was good agree each other. Further more surveys are being conducted and a much wider coverage can be achieved with other countries, then it can be obtained that the East Sea is polluted to some extent, where is the origin of debris, and the finding of floating routes and stationary sea.

  • For the seafloor acoustic image mapping of side scan sonar, the beginning step of the procedure is to fix the absolute sonar (tow-fish) position since the sonar is not hull mounted but towed astern. The technical algorithm used to calculate the actual sonar position without any other additional sub-system, i.e., the underwater acoustic position tracking system or the sonar attitude measuring device, was proposed. In the seafloor image mosaic mapping results using the sonar track (not ship track) developed in this study, any ambiguity or inconsistency of seafloor features was not found. The incidental effect from the sonar position determination procedure orients the towing direction of sonar to be smooth, consequently the swath pattern on the across-track direction becomes stable and the blanking phenomenon of the insonification area is reduced conspicuously. This technical method is considered to be an useful tool when applied toother underwater towing vehicle surveys.

  • Floating debris was recorded from a training ship, #1 Kwarnksan, of Pukyong National University with about 10 knots speed during March, May and July of 1997. The area sampled is the Southeastern Coast of Korea, divided into 40 unit segments on survey routes. Debris fabrication materials were categorized using the following ; man-made or natural wood items, paper, cardboard, nylon rope, netting, styrofoam and plastics, floating metal and glass containers. All identified items within a $100\;{\pm}\;2\;m$ wide band were recorded but ignored if beyond this boundary. The results of distribution and composition of floating debris in the area as follows:1. The quantities of debris during the duration of survey were distributed from 2~605 items per km2. The most obvious trend is the widespread distribution of all debris. 2. The highest densities of all debris were discovered in the coastal waters of Seoimal lighthouse, the southeastern part of Koje island, next near Nakdong estuaries. Especially styrofoam & plastics were observed in 77.4~87.2% of sampled area, next is wood items, 9.1~ 13.5%. And nylon netting & rope, 3.6%, was the third item of pollutant. Others are very small. 3. Compared with the East Coat of Korea, the quantities of all debus in theSoutheastern Sea are 6 times as large as the East Coast. The survey provides a basis for more detailed survey work in the South Sea. Further surveys are being investigated, and from this it is hoped that a much wider coverage can be achieved, perhaps on all sites of the Coast of Korea and contributed to the removal method, finding of sources, stationary area of debris.

  • Floating debris was recorded from a training ship, #1 Kwanaksan, of Pukyong National University with about 10 knots speed during August 19~26, 1996. The area sampled is the East Coast of Korea, divided into 33 unit segments on survey routes. Debris fabrication materials were categorized using the following; man-made or natural wood items, paper, cardboard, nylon rope, netting, styrofoam and plastics, floating metal and glass containers. All identified items within a $100{\pm}2m$ wide band were recorded but ignored if beyond this boundary. The results of distribution and composition of floating debris in the area are as follows: 1. The quantities of debris during the summer were distributed from 1.8~52 items per $km^2$. The most obvious trend is the widespread distribution of all debris. 2. The highest densities of all debris were discovered in the vicinity of Pusan and ills an area. Especially styrofoam & plastics were observed in 81% of sampled area, next is wood items, 9.1%. Nylon netting & rope was the least widespread pollutant. 3. The relationship between distribution of debris and surface currents of the area was not apparently revealed through this survey. Further surveys are being instigated, and from this it is hoped that a much wider coverage can be achived, perhaps on all sites of Southern and Western sea of Korea and contributed to the finding of sources, stationary area of debris.

  • Bunker oil is an essential expense, and it is a high cost in ships' operations. Therefore, it forms an important part of the work shipowners do to minimize losses during operations. With bunkering disputes consistently occurring, bunker surveyors could be employed by shipowners through them and bunker survey companies signing a contract for a bunker surveyor service. Bunker surveyors could play the role of independent contractors and issue statements of fact in relation to bunkering. However, it would be impossible for bunker surveyors to immediately resolve a bunkering dispute since their role and the legal status is not clear while bunker surveys are being conducted on ships. Thus, this study sets out to define the legal status and liability of bunker surveyors and to seek an additional role for them when bunkering disputes occur.

  • A series of surveys are performed to evaluate the abundance, composition and distribution of marine debris on the sea bed around the Busan port. In order to set up a master plan for the marine environmental pollution the relevant maritime authority must understand how many and w㏊t kinds of marine litters are distributed on the sea bed. At first we planed to survey areas divided regularly according to the coast line but there were many sea going vessels and fishing boats. So we selected and surveyed the around area where there were no sea going vessels or fishing boats. The obtained results are as follows: 1. The mean values of litters in number and weight are 5.8 pieces/㏊. and 3.5㎏/㏊. respectively. 2. The highest density in terms of number are vinyl and plastic item, and in weight are fishing gear and ship articles. 3. The nearer to the shore we surveyed the more we collected in terms of the density of marine litters in number and in weight per hectare. 4. Eel pot, oiled waste, rope, others, other pot and net of fishing gear litters in number were 59.9, 22.7, 7.9, 4.5, 3.1 and 1.9% respectively. 5. There is no relationship between the amount of fish caught and the amount of marine debris.
