A Study on Ships Optimal Speed, Deadweight and Their Economy (On the Operations of Common Bulk Carriers Under the Various Managerial Circumstances of Shipping Companies) (상선의 최적속력 및 적화중량톤과 경제성에 관한 연구 ( 일반살적화물선에 있어서 해운운영상의 여건변동을 중심으로 ))

  • A lot of studies of ship's economy are on the traditional fields such asreducing propulsion resistance, raising cargo handling rates and lessening building consts, but there are few researches on the merchant ship's economy concerning their deadweights and speeds according to shipping companies managerial cercumstances. Contrary to the contemporary trend that "the bigger, the better, if the cargo handling rate could increased sufficiently to hold down port time to that rate of smmaler vessels", this paper demonstrates the existence of certain limits in ship's size and speed according to the coditions of the freight rates, voyage distances, cargo handing rates, prices of fuel oil, interst rates etc. Fom the curves of criteria contour for various ship's deadweights and speeds which are depicted from the gird search method, one can get the costs and the yearly profit rates under the conditiions of large volume with long term contracts for the transportation of bulk cargoes. In estimating ship's transportation economy, the auther takes the position that the profit rate method is properer than the cost method, and introduces the calculation table of the voyage profit rate index. The use of the criteria contours will be of help to ship owners in determining the size and speed of the ship which will be built or purchased and serve in a certain trade route.

A Numerical Study on the Flow around a Rudder behind Low Speed Full Ship

  • The development of a high-lift rudder is needed because low speed full ships such as the VLCC(Very Large Crude oil Carrier) have difficulty for obtaining enough lifting force from a common rudder. The rudder of a ship is generally positioned behind the hull and propeller. Therefore, rudder design should consider the interactions between hull, propeller, and rudder. In the present study, the FLUENT code and body fitted mesh systems generated by the GRIDGEN program are adopted for the numerical simulations of flow characteristics around a rudder that is interacting with hull and propeller. Sliding mesh model(SMM) is adopted to analyze the interaction between propeller rotation and wake flow behind hull. Several numerical simulations are performed to compare the interactions such as hull-rudder, propeller-rudder, and hull-propeller-rudder. Also, we consider relationships between the interactions. The results of present numerical simulations show the variation of flow characteristics by the interaction between hull, propeller, and rudder, and these results are compared with an existing experimental result. The present study demonstrates that numerical simulations can be used effectively in the design of high-lift rudder behind low speed full ship.

Exploring the effects of speed and scale on a ship's form factor using CFD

  • The problem of predicting a ship's form factor and associated scale effects has been subject to many investigations in recent years. In this study, an attempt is made to investigate whether the form factor is influenced by a change in the ship's speed by numerically modelling a geosim series of the KCS hull form by means of a RANS solver. The turbulence dependence of the problem is also studied by altering the closure model among three widely used approaches (the k-𝜔, k-𝜔 SST, and k-𝜀 models). The results show that at very low speeds (Froude numbers in the range of 0.02-0.06) the numerical model predicts changes in the form factor of a ship between 10% and 20%, depending on the turbulence model and scale factor choices. As the speed is increased further, the form factor exhibits little change, usually in the range of 1% or less. Simulations where the Reynolds number is changed by approximately two orders of magnitude, achieved by altering the value of viscosity, confirmed that the form factor can be considered Froude-dependent only for low speeds, predicting essentially identical values when high speed cases are considered.

  • Operation Abstract : Operational cost required for navigating a ship may differ from according to type, scale, economic speed, navigation area and other factors. However, it is known that the fuel oil price ratio takes 50~60 %. It is the current trend because of the use of poor quality fuel and it is reviewed even for small to medium sized ships to save the operational costs due to the recent rise of international oil price. Furthermore, ocean carriers are taking action to low speed navigation as the alternative method of reducing fuel consumption. Hence, in this study, fuel consumption of main engine was measured by using actual operating ship data compared with sea speed at sea. It was suggested that the area of M/E's load(70 %) lower than NCR is the optimal navigating condition through the relation between speed and fuel consumption compared with advance ratio together with the load.

  • The speed trial of a ship is one of the important elements guaranteeing its performance under the contract between the ship owner and shipbuilding company. A speed trial at sea, where the tidal current and waves are suppressed to the maximum, can prevent measurement errors due to external force conditions. On the other hand, it is difficult to maintain a calm sea state in most sea areas determined by the influence of the tidal current, wave, wind, etc. Therefore, this study evaluated a method of simulating a tidal current, which is one of the external force conditions, at the speed test operation of a ship, and applied the simulation result to the plan of a speed trial.

  • A full-scale field trial in ice-covered sea is one of the most important tasks in the design of icebreaking ships. The first Korean icebreaking research vessel 'ARAON', after her delivery in late 2009, had a sea ice field trial in the Arctic Sea during July-August, 2010. This paper describes the test procedures and data analysis on the icebreaking performance of the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from the icebreaking performance test in the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea during the Arctic voyage of ARAON includes the speed and engine power of the ship as well as sea ice thickness and strength data. The air temperature, wind speed and heading of the ship were also measured during each sea ice trial. The ARAON was designed to break 1 m thick level ice with a flexural strength of 630kPa at a continuous speed of 3knots. She is registered as a KR POLAR 10 class ship. The principal dimensions of ARAON are 110 m, 19 m and 6.8 m in length, breadth and draft respectively. She is equipped with four 3,500kW diesel-electric main engines and two Azipod type propulsion motors. Four sea ice trials were carried out to understand the relationship between the engine power and the ship speed, given the Arctic ice condition. The analysis shows that the ARAON was able to operate at 1.5knots in a 2.5m thick medium ice floe condition with the engine power of 5MW, and the speed reached 3.1 knots at the same ice floe condition when the power increased to 6.6MW. She showed a good performance of speed in medium ice floe compared to the speed performance in level ice. More detailed analysis is summarized in this paper.

Discussions on Availability of Weather Information Data and Painting Effect of Existing 8,600 TEU Container Ship Using Ship Performance Analysis Program

  • This paper discusses the effectiveness of onboard measurements and data extracted from weather information for speed-power analysis. Furthermore, validation results of hull and propeller cleaning and painting during dry-docking are discussed. Wind and wave information can be obtained from onboard measurements or weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The weather information of a specified position and time is extracted from NOAA weather data and compared with onboard measurements. In addition, to validate the effects of hull cleaning and painting during dry-docking, speed-power analysis results of before and after dry-docking are compared. The results show that both onboard measurements and weather information show acceptable reliability when added resistance and speed-power analysis results are compared with each other. Moreover, the ship performance analysis (SPA) software clearly shows the effects of hull cleaning and painting, and it can provide reliable analysis results with either onboard measurements or weather information. In conclusion, it is confirmed that the analysis method and SPA software used in this study are effective in analyzing the ship's speed-power performance.

  • Recently, the computer vision has been applied to many automation fields. Especially, this paper presents a maritime traffic detection system using computer vision since the high level information can be obtained using obtained area information. The high level informations are obtained such as speed, queueing length, queueing time, ship size, and ship kind. To get ship speed, the two detection lines are set on the predetermined screen position. The speed is obtained the passing time and the predetermined distance between the first and second detection line on the screen. Also, queueing length and time are gotten using screen position of ship. Furthermore, the size and kind of ship are calculated using the ship database and camera calibration data. This developed system contributes to reduce the traffic accidents on the coast. Futhermore, the more information can be extracted using obtained area information.

  • It is necessary for the ship dynamic models to realize ship dynamics and to achieve the real-time analysis in the manoeuvring simulation. Generally, simple dynamic models, such as 1st-order differential equation models of turning angle, turning rate, and forward speed, are used in the manoeuvring simulation for multiple ships. Ship dynamic modeling and parameter estimation methods based on its turning test results are proposed in this paper. Parameter estimation methods for the constant speed model and the speed-changing model are mathematically developed and verified by comparing with turning test results of a real ship.

  • It is very important to investigate the hull response of a fishing vessel in the sea to ensure the safe navigation and fishing operation in rough sea by preserving excellent sea keeping qualities. For this purpose, the author measured various responses of three stem trawlers in waves using real sea experimental measuring system. The author analyzed the experimental data using the statistical and spectral analyzing method to get the characteristics of the motion responses of the vessels according to the wave height and the ship's speed. The results obtained can be summarized as follows ; (1) Rather higher response of the pitch motion due to the wave height appeared in the head sea and the bow sea than any other wave direction without relevance to ship's size. In case of the roll motion, the beam sea and the quartering sea have a high response value. The period of peak of the pitch motion and the roll motion according to the wave height in each vessel has almost same value respectively. (2) The change of response of the pitch motions deeply depend on the ship's speed in the head sea and the bow sea, but not in the other wave direction. (3) The change of response of the roll motions in the beam sea, the quartering sea and the following sea are affected by the influence of the ship's speed in 5k't to 8k't, but not related to the ship's speed in out of that range.
