Maritime transport is now regarded as one of the main contributors to global climate change by virtue of its $CO_2$ emissions. Meanwhile, slow steaming, i.e., slower ship speed, has become a common practice in the maritime industry so as to lower $CO_2$ emissions and reduce bunker fuel consumption. The practice raised various operational decision issues in terms of shipping companies: how much ship speed is, how much to bunker the fuel, and at which port to bunker. In this context, this study addresses an operation problem in a shipping companies, which is the problem of determining the ship speed, bunkering ports, and bunkering amount at the ports over a given ship route to minimize the bunker fuel and ship time costs as well as the carbon tax which is a regulatory measure aiming at reducing $CO_2$ emissions. The ship time cost is included in the problem because slow steaming increases transit times, which implies increased in-transit inventory costs in terms of shippers. We formulate the problem as a nonlinear lot-sizing model and suggest a Lagrangian heuristic to solve the problem. The performance of the heuristic algorithm is evaluated using the data obtained from reliable sources. Although the problem is an operational problem, the heuristic algorithm is used to address various strategic issues facing shipping companies, including the effects of bunker prices, carbon taxes, and ship time costs on the ship speed, bunkering amount and number of bunkering ports. For this, we conduct sensitivity analyses of these factors and finally discuss study findings.
Two different sensors (here, KOMPSAT and RADARSAT) are considered for ship detection, and are used to delineate the detection performance for their data. The experiments are set for coastal regions of Mokpo Port and Ulsan Port and field experiments on board pilot boat are conducted to collect in situ ship validation information such as ship type and length. This paper introduce mainly the experiment result of ship detection by both RADARSAT SAR imagery and landbased RADAR data, operated by the local Authority of South Korea, so called vessel traffic system (VTS) radar. Fine imagery of Ulsan Port was acquired on June 19, 2004 and in-situ data such as wind speed and direction, taking pictures of ships and natural features were obtained aboard a pilot ship. North winds, with a maximum speed of 3.1 m/s were recorded. Ship's position, size and shape and natural features of breakwaters, oil pipeline and alongside ship were compared using SAR and VTS. It is shown that KOMPSAT/EOC has a good performance in the detection of a moving ship at a speed of 7 kts or more an hour that ship and its wake can be imaged. The detection capability of RADARSAT doesn't matter how fast ship is running and depends on a ship itself, e.g. its material, length and type. Our results indicate that SAR can be applicable to automated ship detection for a VTS and SAR combination service.

This study discusses data collection, calculation of wind and wave-induced resistance, and speed-power analysis of an 8,600 TEU container ship. Data acquisition system of the ship operator was improved to obtain the data necessary for the analysis, which was accomplished using SPA (Ship Performance Analysis, Park et al., 2019) in conformation with ISO15016:2015. From a previous operation profile of the container, the standard operating conditions of mean draft were 12.5 m and 13.6 m, which were defined with the mean stowage configuration of each condition. Model tests, including the load-variation test, were conducted to validate new ship performance and for the speed-power analysis. The major part of the added resistance of container ship is due to the wind. To check the reliability of wind-resistance calculation results, the resistance coefficients, added resistance, and speed-power analysis results using the Fujiwara regression formula (ISO15016:2015) and Computational fluid dynamics (Ryu et al., 2016; Jeon et al., 2017) analysis were compared. Wind speed and direction measured using an anemometer were used for wind-resistance calculation and the wave resistance was calculated using the wave-height and direction-data from weather information. Also, measured water temperature was used to calculate the increase in resistance owing to the deviation in water density. As a result, the SPA analysis using measured data and weather information was proved to be valid and able to identify the ship's resistance propulsion performance. Even with little difference in the air-resistance coefficient value, both methods provide sufficient accuracy for speed-power analysis. The differences were unnoticeable when the speed-power analysis results using each method were compared. Also, speed-power analysis results of the 8,600 TEU container ship in two draft conditions show acceptable trends when compared with the model test results and are also able to show power increase owing to hull fouling and aging. Thus, results of speed-power analysis of the existing 8,600 TEU container ship using the SPA program appropriately exhibit the characteristics of speed-power performance in deal conditions.
When a ship sails in shallow water, it is well known that an additional sinkage and trim of the ship(squat) is caused by change of hydrodynamic force between the seabed and the bottom of a ship. In this paper, to examine this phenomenon by model tests, the squat of KCS model ship at a low speed is measured by the vision based ship motion measurement system during HPMM tests. Various combinations of a ship speed, a rudder angle and a drift angle were tested at three depth conditions(H/T = 1.2, 1.5 & 2.0). As a result, increase of the ship's speed and ship's drift angle caused an increase in ship squat, but the ship's rudder angle did not. The rate of increase in ship squat was the most at H/T = 1.2 condition. Lastly these experimental results are compared to the results by three empirical formulas and two CFD methods. The tendency of ship squat measured by experiment is similar to those of empirical formulas.
The turning circle of a ship is the path followed by her center of gravity in making a turn of 360$^{\circ}$degrees or more with helm at constant angle. But generally it means her path traced at full angle of the rudder. For the ordinary ship the bow will be inside and the stern outside this circle. It has been usually understood that the turning circle is not essentinally affected by ship's speed at Froude numbers less than about 0.30. However, it is recently reported that the speed provide considerable effects upon the turning circle in piloting many ships actually at sea. In this paper, the author analyzed what effects the speed could provide on the turning circle theoretically from the viewpoint of ship motions and examined how the alteration of the speed at Froude no. under 0.30 affect the turning circle actually, through experiments of actual ships of a small and large size. The main results were as follows.1. Even though ship's speed at Froude no. under 0.30, the alteration of the speed affects the turning circle considerably.2. When the full ahead speeds at Froude no. under 0.30 of small and large ships were increased about 3 times slow ahead speeds, the mean rates of increase of the advances, tactical diameters and final diameters of thease ships were about 16%, 21% and 19% respectively.3. When the full ahead speeds at Froued no. under 0.30 of small and large ships were increased about 3 times slow ahead speed, the mean rate of increase of the turning circle elements of large ships was greater 10% than that of small ships. 4. When the full ahead speeds at Froued no. under 0.30 of small and large ships were increased about 3times slow ahead speeds, the mean rates of increase of the tactical diameter and final diameter of thease ships were greater than that of the advances of thease ships. 5. When only alteration of speed or sip's head turning is the effective action to avoid navigational fixed hagards, reducing the speed is always more advantageous than increasing the speed in order to shorten fore or transverse distance.

There may be a lor of studies on the economic design of ship for the most favorable combination of design basis on the owner's request. However, there are few on the economical ship's size and speed for the ship owner's stand point. This paper describes on the optimal ship's size and speed to the given marine commercial environments for the owner's requirement to the shipyard. As the result of the paper, the criterion curve of bulk carrier will also be used to assess existing ships for their profitability.
The speed and power performance of a ship is not only a guarantee issue between the ship owner and the ship-yard, but also is related with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulation. Recently, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the procedure of the measurement and assessment for ship speed and power at sea trial. The results of speed and power performance measured in actual sea condition must inevitably include various uncertainty factors. In this study, the influence for systematic error of shaft power measurement system was examined using the Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the expanded uncertainty of speed and power performance is approximately ${\pm}1.2%$ at the 95% confidence level(k=2) and most of the uncertainty factor is attributed to shaft torque measurement system.
A mechanism of hovering flight of small insects which is called the Weis-Fogh mechanism is applied to ship propulsion. A model of the propulsion mechanism is based on a two-dimensional model of the Weis-Fogh mechanism and consists of one or two wings in a square channel. A model ship equipped with this propulsion mechanism was made, and working tests were performed in a sea. The model ship sailed very smoothly and the moving speed of the wing was small compared with the advancing speed of the ship.
