A gun is still one of the major weapons of a combat ship. To assess the ship's fire control capability which is influenced by tracking system, fire control algorithm, gun, the ship itself, target behavior, environment and engagement situation, simulation system for gun-oriented engagement for surface ship is needed. This paper proposes the process for designing and implementing a gun-oriented engagement simulation system using DEVS(Discrete Event Simulation Specification), which is a formalism based on the set theory. It consists of the following activities : 1) analyzing the characteristics of a gun-oriented engagement, 2) constructing the deterministic model of the combat ship of study with DEVS, 3) modeling properties of each entity showing as stochastic errors. With this process, the gun-oriented engagement simulation system is developed and applied for the combat system under development.
To maintain the existing systems of ships and introduce autonomous operation technology, it is necessary to improve situational awareness through the sensor fusion of the automatic identification system (AIS) and automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA), which are installed sensors. This study proposes an algorithm for determining whether AIS and ARPA signals are sent to the same ship in real time. To minimize the number of errors caused by the time series and abnormal phenomena of heterogeneous signals, a tracking method based on the combination of the unscented Kalman filter and probabilistic data association filter is performed on ARPA radar signals, and a position prediction method is applied to AIS signals. Especially, the proposed algorithm determines whether the signal is for the same vessel by comparing motion-related components among data of heterogeneous signals to which the corresponding method is applied. Finally, a measurement test is conducted on a training ship. In this process, the proposed algorithm is validated using the AIS and ARPA signal data received by the voyage data recorder for the same ship. In addition, the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the test results with those obtained from raw data. Therefore, it is recommended to use a sensor fusion algorithm that considers the characteristics of sensors to improve the situational awareness accuracy of existing ship systems.
The Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) lies between the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) boundaries of Korea, Japan, and China. The geographical positioning of the IORS makes it ideal for monitoring ships in the area. In this study, we introduce ship monitoring results by Automatic Identification System (AIS) and the Broadband 3GTM radar, which has been developed for use in small ships using the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technique. AIS and FMCW radar data were collected at IORS from November 23th to 30th, 2013. The acquired FMCW radar data was converted to 2-D binary image format over pre-processing, including the internal and external noise filtering. The ship positions detected by FMCW radar images were passed into a tracking algorithm. We then compared the detection and tracking results from FMCW radar with AIS information and found that they were relatively well matched. Tracking performance is especially good when ships are across from each other. The results also show good monitoring capability for small fishing ships, even those not equipped with AIS or with a dysfunctional AIS.
In this paper vector code correlation(VCC) method and an algorithm to promote the image processing performance in building an effective measurement system using cameras are described for automatically berthing and controlling the ship equipped with side thrusters. In order to realize automatic ship berthing, it is indispensable that the berthing assistant system on the ship should continuously trace a target in the berth to measure the distance to the target and the ship attitude, such that we can make the ship move to the specified location. The considered system is made up of 4 apparatuses compounded from a CCD camera, a camera direction controller, a popular PC with a built in image processing board and a signal conversion unit connected to parallel port of the PC. The object of this paper is to reduce the image processing time so that the berthing system is able to ensure the safety schedule against risks during approaching to the berth. It could be achieved by composing the vector code image to utilize the gradient of an approximated plane found with the brightness of pixels forming a certain region in an image and verifying the effectiveness on a commonly used PC. From experimental results, it is clear that the proposed method can be applied to the measurement system for automatic ship berthing and has the image processing time of fourfold as compared with the typical template matching method.

According to statistics conducted by the Korea Coast Guard, the number of accidents on small boats under 5 tons is increasing every year. This is because only a small number of people are on board. The previously developed maritime distress and safety systems are not well distributed because passengers must be equipped with additional remote equipment. The purpose of this study is to develop a distress awareness system that recognizes man over-board situations in real time. This study aims to present the part of the passenger tracking system among the small ship's distress awareness situational system that can generate passenger's location information in real time using deep learning based object detection and tracking technologies. The system consisted of the following steps. 1) the passenger location information is generated in the form of Bounding box using its detection model (YOLOv3). 2) Based on the Bounding box data, Deep SORT predicts the Bounding box's position in the next frame of the image with Kalman filter. 3) When the actual Bounding Box is created within the range predicted by Kalman-filter, Deep SORT repeats the process of recognizing it as the same object. 4) If the Bounding box deviates the ship's area or an error occurs in the number of tracking occupant, the system is decided the distress situation and issues an alert. This study is expected to complement the problems of existing technologies and ensure the safety of individuals aboard small boats.
Ship maneuverability is mainly determined according to hull-propeller-rudder system of a ship and directly related to the ship safety during the operation in the ocean. Among hull-propeller-rudder system the rudder system had direct concern with the ship maneuverability and a special rudder has been recommended to improve the ship maneuverability. In this paper the study of flapped rudder's 2-dimensional section was accomplished Model tests had been carried out with different angles of attack of a main foil and flap's deflection angles to predict the performance of the flapped rudder and the 2 frame particle tracking method had been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field during model tests. $Re=1.027{\times}10^4$ had been used during the whole experiments and measured results had been compared with each other.

This paper describes on the system and method for automatically tracking and real-time monitoring the position of target ships relative to the own ship using a PC based radar system that displays radar images and electronic charts together on a single PC screen. This system includes a simulator for generating the GGA and VTG information of target ships and a simulator for generating the TTM and OSD outputs from a ARPA radar and then host computer accepts NMEA0183 sentences on the maneuvering information of target ships from these simulators. The results obtained are summarized as follows;1. The system developed this study can be used as a range finder for measuring the distance between two ships and as a device for providing the maneuvering information such as distance and bearing to target ships from own ship on ECS screen. 2. From the result of position tracking for a selected target ship tracked with an update rate of 5 seconds using the $\alpha$-$\beta$ tracker, we concluded that the smoothing effect by the $\alpha$-$\beta$tracker was very effective and stable except in the time interval until about one minute after the target is detected. 3. From the fact that the real-time maneuvering information of tracked ship targets via a local area network (LAN) from a host computer installed a radar target extractor was successfully transferred to various monitoring computers of ship, we concluded that this system can be used as a sub-monitoring system of ARPA radar.
Recently, amid active research on domestic shipbuilding industry and IT convergence technology, with the development of satellite detection technology for ship safety operation, ships monitored the movement of ships with the mandatory long-range identification & tracking of vessels and automatic identification system. It is possible to help safe navigation, but it is necessary to develop safety device that alert the marine officer who rely on radar to correct conditions in case of weightlessness. Therefore, an ocean fog alarm system was developed to detect and inform using photo sensors. The fabricated ocean fog detect and alarm system consists of a small, low-power optical sensor transceiver and data sensing processing module. Through experiment, it is confirmed that the fabricated ocean fog detect and alarm system measure the corresponding concentration of ocean fog for fogless circumstance and fogbound circumstance, respectively. Furthermore, the fabricated system can control RPM of ship engine according to the concentration of ocean fog, and consequently, the fabricated system can be applied to assistant device for ship safety operation.

Due to the merit of having wide range with low cost, HF radar's ship detection and tracking research as maritime surveillance system has been recently studied. Many ship detection and tracking algorithms have been developed so far, however, performance comparison cannot be conducted properly because the states of target ships (such as moving path, size, etc.) differ from each study. In this paper, we propose a simulator based on compact HF radar, which generates data according to the size and moving path of target ship. Given the generated data with identical ship state, it is possible to conduct performance comparison. In order to validate the proposed simulator, the simulated data has been compared with real data collected by the SeaSonde HF radar sites. As a result, it has been shown that our simulated data resembles the real data. Therefore, the performance of various detection or tracking algorithms can be compared and analyzed respectively by using our simulated data.

After building a ship in a shipyard, there are so many repeated inspection of welding seam defects and painting status before delivering to the ship's owner. An inspection on the bottom part of a ship in commercial service should be done in every two years for the purpose of safety and for the prevention of ship speed deterioration. conventional welding seam inspection systems are rely on the visual inspection by human or the ultrasonic inspection for the selective part of a ship. This paper suggests a remote controlled inspection system for the examination of large ships or steel structures. The proposed system moves in contact with the ship under inspection and have a CCD camera to provide visual-guidance information to a remotely located human worker. Additionally this system utilizes a weld line tracking algorithm for an optimal position control. We verified the effectiveness of the inspection system by experimental data.
