Discussions on Availability of Weather Information Data and Painting Effect of Existing 8,600 TEU Container Ship Using Ship Performance Analysis Program

  • This paper discusses the effectiveness of onboard measurements and data extracted from weather information for speed-power analysis. Furthermore, validation results of hull and propeller cleaning and painting during dry-docking are discussed. Wind and wave information can be obtained from onboard measurements or weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The weather information of a specified position and time is extracted from NOAA weather data and compared with onboard measurements. In addition, to validate the effects of hull cleaning and painting during dry-docking, speed-power analysis results of before and after dry-docking are compared. The results show that both onboard measurements and weather information show acceptable reliability when added resistance and speed-power analysis results are compared with each other. Moreover, the ship performance analysis (SPA) software clearly shows the effects of hull cleaning and painting, and it can provide reliable analysis results with either onboard measurements or weather information. In conclusion, it is confirmed that the analysis method and SPA software used in this study are effective in analyzing the ship's speed-power performance.

  • The painting process of large ships is an intense manual operation that typically comprises 9-12% of the total shipbuilding cost. Accordingly, shipbuilders need to estimate the required amount of anti-corrosive coatings and painting resources for inventory and cost control. This study aims to develop a software system which enables the shipbuilders to estimate paint area using existing 3D CAD ship structural models. The geometric information of the ships structure are extracted from the existing shipbuilding CAD/CAM system and used to create painting zones. After specifying the painting zones, users can generate the paint faces by clipping structural parts inside each zone. Finally, the paint resources may be obtained from the product of the paint areas and required paint thickness. Implementing the developed software system to real shipbuilders' operations has contributed to improved productivity, faster resource estimation, better accuracy, and fewer coating defects over their conventional manual calculation methods for painting resource estimation.

  • The dock is the most important resource in shipbuilding yard. Among the shipbuilding schedules, the ship erection schedule in a dock is preferentially built. As results of it, the other schedules(machining in plants, block assembly, pre-painting, pre-rigging, painting and etc) are made. In this study, ship erection scheduling is formulated using ILOG Scheduler. This study is to develop a new problem solving method for ship erection to make an effective schedule based on Constraint Satisfaction Technique(CST).

Design and Experiment of Automatic Painting Robot Using Permanent Magnet Mobile Robot in Ship Cargo Tank (자석대차를 이용한 화물창 내 자동 도장로봇에 대한 연구)

  • In order to build a ship, painting on ship cargo tank is one of the most dangerous parts as it involves working in high altitudes and a closed ship cargo tank. Therefore, researchers have been developing devices that will enable mobile robots to operate on vertical walls. The wall-climbing robots have been widely used to attach on the wall such as suction types. These types can be utilized regardless of the wall material. However, it is required to adhere and control the suction cups. To moderate this drawbacks, this paper proposes an automatic painting robot that uses a permanent magnet mobile robot. Using the magnetic characteristics, this robot can move on the boat vertically and horizontally even while hanging on the ceiling of the ship cargo tank. Also, we made a prototype to test adhesive force of the permanent magnet wheel and mobile robot as well as the towing capacity and auto-piloting ability.

  • Ship painting procedures can be divided into two categories; Out-shell plate painting of the hull and the interior painting of each double gull blocks. It is really hard to apply standardized and automated operations to the latter because the double hull blocks contains a variety of complicated supportive materials and pipes to strengthen the ship structure. In addition their poor working conditions cause painting workers to avoid working in them, resulting in the waste of paints and additional pollution issues. So this research, successfully focused on overcoming the difficulties in working in the complicated blocks and the tough working conditions introduces the main details of automatic equipment systems and their transfer algorism which show how the equipment paints the inner sides of a longitudinal stiffener and moves to another automatically.

Development of the Limit Switch Box for a Ship and Its Performance Evaluation against Salt Water

  • A limit switch box is used for an indicator of a valve actuator. This device indicates an opening and closing of a valve or a throttle in the valve actuator. In a ship, equipments require safety and robustness because of a rough environment and a specific condition during a voyage. However, the limit switch box has been used in an indoor environment generally. This study developed a new limit switch box which can be used at an outdoor environment. This study designed the new limit switch box. The housing of the limit switch box was made by an aluminum die cast method with surface painting after anodizing or chromate coating. In order to evaluate the endurance of the housing, the endurance tests against salt water have been conducted. Experiment results showed that the proposed device provides a reliable performance against salt water.
