Modeling and Simulation of the 6 DOF Motion of a High Speed Planing Hull Running in Calm Sea (정수중을 활주하는 고속선의 6자유도 운동 모델링 및 시뮬레이션)

  • When a planing hull straightly runs and turns, its floating position and pitch angle are changed depending on its speed, and large transient motion happens. In this paper, six degrees of freedom(6 DOF) equations of motion, which could simulate the motion of a planing hull, are established. Static and dynamic forces in vertical plane are modeled using pre-calculated displacements and metacentric heights depending on various draft, lift under bottom, and vertical damping coefficients which are used to tune the final motion. Hydrodynamic coefficients in horizontal plane at various equilibrium state are calculated by using Lewandowski's empirical formula and the speed-dependent equilibrium state are calculated beforehand by Savitsky's formula. The speed effects are considered by curve-fitting the coefficients at various speed to the polynomials. Accelerating, decelerating and backing, turning, and zig-zag are simulated and compared with the sea trial results, and it is confirmed that the speed reduction, roll, and pitch during such maneuvers of sea trial and simulation are well consistent.

  • As port transport system consists of subsystems such as navigation system, cargo handling system, storage system, inland transport system, and Management and Information system, the productivity of this system is determined by the minimum level of subsystem. From the viewpoint of elaborating the efficiency of integrated system, it is valuable to determine the optimal level of harbour tug boat which is the most important factor of navigation system. This paper treats the optimal amount of harbour tug boat by simulation, and applied to Pusan port. In the course of simulation, an emperical formula is introduced for determining the Horse Power (HP) of tug boat by the ship's gross tonnage (G/T) refering to the cases of various ports of other countries, that is ; $Y=9.96X^{0.6}+569$. X : The gross tonnage of vessel (G/T). Y : The Horse Power (HP) of tug boat. The results of the simulation are summarized as follows ; 1) In 1987, three or four low-powered harbour tug boats, five mid-powered harbour tug boats and four high-powered harbour tug boats are necessary in the mean level. But, five or seven low-powered harbour tug boats, ten mid-powered harbour tug boats and eight high-powered harbour tug boats are necessary lest delay should occur at all. 2) In 1992, 1lee or four low-powered harbour tug boats, six mid-powered harbour tug boats and seven high-powered harbour tug boats are estimated and be necessary in the mean level.

  • This paper describes a system for LNG carrier's loading and discharging work education This system consists of three modules(cargo work simulation, ballast work simulation and loading calculation module), and could be a useful to train mariners boarding on LNG carrier so as to take a suitable action while their ship maneuvering and cargo handling.

  • A coal handling machine is a type of equipment used for loading coal, the main material in a steam power plant, along a conveyer belt from a ship, and is placed after the driving chain bucket. However, studies on the boom hoisting cylinder, which is a hydraulic system used to control the angle of the boom based on loading location, indicate that domestic models are insufficient, and are thereby often substituted with a foreign product. In this study, a technique for analyzing the contact pressure in a thick-walled cylinder was established by comparing the contact pressure, which is calculated theoretically based on the results obtained from FEM simulation, and by checking whether the working oil is leaking from the boom hoisting cylinder using a v-seal. In addition, the driving motion was simulated according to the strokes of the cylinder, and the structural stability was verified under the maximum output conditions.

The Assessment of Safe Navigation Regarding Hydrodynamic forces between Ships in Restricted Waterways

  • This paper is primarily focused on the safe navigation between overtaking and overtaken vessels in restricted waterways under the external forces, such as wind and current. The maneuvering simulation between two ships was conducted to find an appropriate safe speed and distance, which is required to avoid collision. From the viewpoint of marine safety, a greater transverse distance between two ships is more needed for the smaller vessel. Regardless of external forces, the smaller vessel will get a greater effect of hydrodynamic forces than the bigger one. In the case of close navigation between ships under the forces of wind and current, the vessel moving at a lower speed is potentially hazardous because the rudder force of the lower speed vessel is not sufficient for steady-state course-keeping, compared to that of the higher speed vessel.

Because the number of berth will increase to 78 from 49 until 2011 due to additional developments, minor modification is expected for the water utilities. This study examined environmental conditions, marine accidental data, marine traffic capacity, traffic flow survey and fisheries zone status near Ulsan approaching water area. Finally, a questionaire survey was carried out for experts and users to propose new plan

  • Recently, an ALV (Automated Lifting Vehicle) is studied as an efficient transporter, which can reduce the waiting time during ship operation in a container terminal. There are little of studies on an ALV system considering dynamic factors after analysing the cooperation between equipments. The performance of an ALV depends on self-loading & unloading of an ALV, vehicle’s interference, and occupancy of an available transfer point under dynamic environment. So, it is very difficult to evaluate the productivity of a container terminal with an ALV system. Therefore the simulation model with operational rules that be apt for an ALV system must be developed. Also the model has to consider the characteristics of interface operations and vehicle traffic. Supposing an container terminal with perpendicular layout, this study analyses the process of container handling operation and proposes operational rules such as the ALV dispatching, routing algorithm and so on for a model. We developed a simulation model for a container terminal with an ALV system using object-oriented simulation software, Anylogic.

  • In the port of Ulsan with the area of harbor limit of $83km^2$, 25,432 vessels have been entering annually and only 35 vessels can anchor simultaneously at the anchorage. The area of harbor limit of Ulsan constitutes just 65 percent compared to $127.5km^2$ which is an average of main ports in Korea. In this regard, the port of Ulsan needs to expand the area of anchorages inevitably for enhancing the efficiency of port operation. To select the best anchorage area in Mipo harbor with the introduction of a concept of emergency anchorage, this study analyzed the safety of navigation and anchorage, and safety management, etc. in the prospected anchorage on the basis of the marine traffic survey observing traffic density. Furthermore, after drawing preliminary and final schemes through gathering the opinions from maritime users, safety management organizations and academic experts group, the best arrangement of emergency anchorage has been selected through the conference of interested parties. Then, the final scheme was also verified through figuring out the marine traffic system and carrying out the ship handling simulation.

An Evaluation of Effectiveness for Providing Safety Navigation Supporting Service : Focused on Route Plan Sharing Service (안전 항해 지원 서비스 제공에 대한 유용성 평가(I) : 항로 계획 공유 서비스를 대상으로)

  • In this paper, we suggest a route plan sharing service for the navigation assistance service which is the second item of 16 items in maritime service portfolios (MSPs) for safety navigation based on interview process. Also, we developed scenarios for effectiveness evaluation of the proposed service, and conducted simulations using full mission ship handling simulator (FMSS) for effectiveness evaluation of proposed services based on the developed scenarios. Through the simulations, we analyzed proximity measures, controllability statistics and subjective evaluations to assess the usefulness of suggested service. If accomplishing the test for new services to apply real ships and vessel traffic (VTS) center, there has possibilities to occur various risks in terms of time/cost problems. Therefore, there is needs for the preliminary effectiveness evaluation processes necessarily when adopts and implements new services. Because we expected the service that is helpful for safety navigation, but the test results are not when conducted a simulation.
