The rapid increase of the current marine accidents is mainly due to the human execution errors. In an effort to address this, various kinds of researches such as construction of the digital vessels and vessel information monitoring systems have been conducted. But for safe navigation of vessels, it lack on systems study which can efficiently store, utilize and manage the mass data accepted by the vessel. In this paper, we propose a VWS(Virtual World System) that is based on the architecture of intelligent systems RVC(Reactive Layer-Virtual World-Considerative Layer) model of intelligent autonomous navigation system. VWS is responsible to store all the necessary information for safe navigation of the vessel and the information services to the sub-system of intelligent autonomous navigation system. VWS uses topology database to express the specific problem area, and utilizes a scheduling to reflect the characteristics of the real-time processing environment. Also, Virtual World defines API for the system to reflect the characteristics of the distributed processing environment. As a case study, the VWS is applied to a intelligent ship autonomous navigation system, and simulation is done to prove the effectiveness of the proposed system.
The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the most important oceanic environmental factors in determining the change of marine environments and ecological activities. Satellite thermal infrared images can be effective for understanding the global trend of sea surface temperature due to large scale. However, their low spatial resolution caused some limitations in some areas where complicated and refined coastal shapes due to many islands are present as in the Korean Peninsula. The coastal ocean is also very important because human activities interact with the environmental change of coastal area and most aqua farming is distributed in the coastal ocean. Thus, low-cost airborne thermal infrared remote sensing with high resolution capability is considered for verifying its possibility to extract SST and to monitor the changes of coastal environment. In this study, an airborne thermal infrared system was implemented using a low-cost and ground-based thermal infrared camera (FLIR), and more than 8 airborne acquisitions were carried out in the western coast of the Korean Peninsula during the periods between May 23, 2012 and December 7, 2013. The acquired thermal infrared images were radiometrically calibrated using an atmospheric radiative transfer model with a support from a temperature-humidity sensor, and geometrically calibrated using GPS and IMU sensors. In particular, the airborne sea surface temperature acquired in June 25, 2013 was compared and verified with satellite SST as well as ship-borne thermal infrared and in-situ SST data. As a result, the airborne thermal infrared sensor extracted SST with an accuracy of $1^{\circ}C$.
Water surface velocity meters with microwave were applied to stream discharge measurements and its practical aspects were evaluted. The rating of the surface velocity meters was performed through a carriage and a water tank for the ship model test. It gave5.5% or less errors of average measured velocities under the vertical tilt ang1e of 20$^{\circ}$, 35$^{\circ}$, or 45$^{\circ}$ . A surface velocity meter was used to measure flood velocities at Yoju bridge from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on August 26, 1995. The results showed that surface velocities ranged from 2 to 4 m/s. With the measured surface velocities multiplied by 0.85, the discharge was computed as 10,500 m$^3$/s. It differed $\pm$2% or less from the value of a stage-discharge curve and that of an unsteady flow simulation. Although the measured data are used sparsely per 40 or 60 meters, the computed discharges do not give large variation. Stream discharge measurements were also performed under the normal condition without floods. With the known values of Taechong Dam releases. the depth averaging factors of velocity were calculated by 0.83~0.87. Although there are errors from wind action and inherent ones in the velocity meters, the research showed that surface velocity meters could be an simple and practical alternative for flood discharge measurements.

In this study, we assess changes in water quality trends over time based on certain control measurements in order to identify and analyze the cause of the trend in water quality. The current water pollution in the Nakdong River was analyzed, as it suggests that the significant changes in water quality have occurred in between 2006 and 2010. Based on monthly average data, we have examined for trends of the Nakdong River watershed in water temperature, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP). Moreover, we have investigated seasonal variation of water quality of sites within the Nakdong River Basin by implementing further analyses such as, Correlation Coefficient, Regression Analysis, Hierarchical Clustering Method, and Time Series Analysis on SPSS. Geology and topography of the watershed, controlled by various conditions such as, climate, vegetation, topography, soil, and rain medium, have been affected by the non-homogeneity. Our study suggests that such variables could possibly cause eutrophication problems in the river. One possible way to overcome this particular problem is to lay up a ship on the river by increasing the nasal flow measurement of the Nakdong River during rainy season. Moreover, the water management requires arranging the measurement of the flow in order to secure the river while the numerous construction projects need to be continuously observed. However, the water is not flowing tributary of the reason for the timing to be flowing in a natural state of river water and industrial water intake because agriculture. Therefore, ongoing research is needed in addition to configuration of all observations.
This study was a clinical Quasi-experiment to examine the effects of the range of motion exercise on powerlessness and life satisfaction among the E-Institutionalized elderly in Pusan. The purpose was to test the effect of the range of motion exercises on powerlessness and life satis-faction, and to examine the correlation between powerlessness and life satisfaction. The subjects for this study were 54 elderly people, both were over 60 and residing at I-Institution in Pusan. The research samples of 54 elderly were divided into an experimental and control group by matching randomized assignment. The instruments for this study were the Assessment Tool of Powerlessness in the elderly developed by Miller, Life satisfaction developed by Yoon Jin, and the Active-Passive Range of Motion Exercise Program which was developed and utilized by Shin, Jae-Shin. The data were collected from December 15, 1990 to November 1991. The paired t-test, t-test and ANCOVA were used to test hypothesis I and II, related to the Effect of the Range of Motion Exercises to powerlessness and life satisfaction. To identify the relationship of the range of motion exercises to powerlessness and life satisfaction, path analysis was done through multiple regression. The interrelationship of the variables was analyzed using t-test paired t-test. The results of the three hypothesis can be summarized as follows : 1. Hypothesis I -the experimental group which participated in the Range of Motion Exercise gets lower powerlessness score than that of the control group-was accepted by t-test (t = -3.40, p = .001) but not accepted by ANCOVA (F = .1, p =.96). 2. Hypothesis II - the experimental group which participated in the Range of Motion Exercise gets a higher Life Satisfaction Score than that of the control group-was not supported by t-test(t = 1.01, p = .316) but was accepted by ANCOVA (F = 4.39, p = .006). 3. Hypothesis III - if the powerlessness Score becomes higher, the Life Satisfaction Score will be-come lower - was accepted by Pearson Correlation Coefficient (pre-exercise : r : -.34, p=.006), (post exercise : r = -.06, p=.32) . The relation-ship between the score of powerlessness and life satisfaction was negatively correlated. The results obtained clearly showed that the effects of the range of motion exercises on powerlessness and life satisfaction are beneficial to the elderly The relation between the scores of powerlessness and life satisfaction was negatively correlated and the range of motion exercise had a direct influence to powerlessness. Therefore, it is concluded that the relationship between powerlessness and life satis-faction was not a causal one. Also it is concluded that the range of motion exercises can be applied as a nursing intervention to reduce powerlessness and to improve life satisfaction in the elderly.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of Korean port investment by using the newly developed slack-based multi-year panel congestion model of DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis). Inputs[port investment amount, cargo handling capacity, and berthing capacity], and outputs[cargo handling amount, number of ship calls, revenue, and score of customer service satisfaction] are used during 1994-2004 for 20 Korean seaports. Empirical analysis identified congestion especially in port investment as input at the ports of Gunsan, and Busan in the all 3 models, and the ports of Pyungtag, Mogpo, Yeosu, and leju in over 2 models. Port investment induced the rapid increase of port efficiency from the ports of Masan, Incheon, Donghae, and Samcheok. Therefore other ports except these ports should examine the reason about the inefficiency of port investment by searching out the situation of each ports directly. The main policy implication based on the findings of this study is that The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs in Korea should introduce the new measurement way after reviewing the multi-year slack-based congestion approach when the amount of port investment for each port is decided.
Recently, It became possible to transport freights and energy resources via Northern Sea Route(NSR) as global warming has been accelerated. As a result, all countries of the world and Korean local governments have had a struggle to take the advantageous position first in NSR development. However, this extreme competitions might have a negative effect on the national port industry and cause unnecessary social costs and economic losses. Therefore, the main target of this study is to find the most suitable port for NSR using AHP analysis. Most of the data was gained from previous literatures and public statistics and the weight of each factor was calculated by the result of expert survey. As a result, Busan port has the biggest competitiveness, followed by Yeosu Gwangyang, Ulsan and Incheon. From the result, this study suggested 3 possible scenarios. The first scenario specializing Busan port in NSR focuses more on developing the related businesses such as repair of ships, refueling, ship stores trade than attracting the more cargoes. the second is a strategy to make Ulsan port as a hub for energy resources, especially liquid cargo on NSR. the last is a mixed one to assign suitable roles to the ports according to their competitive capabilities.
In this study, a gate simulation model was developed to reduce the truck waiting time for trucking companies servicing container terminals. To verify the developed model, 4 weeks of truck gate-in/gate-out data was collected in December 2014 at the Port of Busan New Port. Also, the existing gate system was compared to the proposed gate system using the developed simulation model. The result showed that based on East gate-in, a maximum number of 50 waiting trucks with a maximum waiting time of 120 minutes. With the proposed system the maximum number of waiting trucks was 10 with a maximum waiting time of 5.3 minutes. Based on West gate-in, the maximum number of waiting trucks was 17 and the maximum waiting time was 34 minutes in the existing gate system. With the proposed system the maximum number of waiting trucks was 10 with a maximum waiting time of 5.3 minutes. Based on West gate-out, the maximum number of waiting trucks was 11 with a maximum waiting time of 5.5 minutes. With the proposed system the maximum number of waiting trucks was 9 with a maximum waiting time of 4.4 minutes. This developed model shows how many waiting trucks there are, depending on the gate-in/gate-out time of each truck. This system can be used to find optimal gate system operating standards by assuming and adjusting the gate-in/gate-out time of each truck in different situations.

A ship's propulsion shafting system is subjected to varying magnitudes of intermittent loadings that pose great risks such as failure. Consequently, the dynamic characteristic of a propulsion shafting system must be designed to withstand the resonance that occurs during operation. This resonance results from hydrodynamic interaction between the propeller and fluid. For ice-class vessels, this interaction takes place between the propeller and ice. Producing load- and resonance-induced stresses, the propeller-ice interaction is the primary source of excitation, making it a major focus in the design requirements of propulsion shafting systems. This paper examines the transient torsional vibration response of the propulsion shafting system of an ice-class research vessel. The propulsion train is composed of an electric motor, flexible coupling, spherical gears, and a propeller configuration. In this paper, the theoretical analysis of transient torsional vibration and propeller-ice interaction loading is first discussed, followed by an explanation of the actual transient torsional vibration measurements. Measurement data for the analysis were compared with an applied estimation factor for the propulsion shafting design torque limit, and they were evaluated using an existing international standard. Addressing the transient torsional vibration of a propulsion shafting system with an electric motor, this paper also illustrates the influence of flexible coupling stiffness design on resulting resonance. Lastly, the paper concludes with a proposal to further study the existence of negative torque on a gear train and its overall effect on propulsion shafting systems.

The methods by turning circle test and maneuvering indices have been used to study and evaluate the maneuverability of a ship. However recently many studies utilizing the GPS are made on the measurement of the turning circle and in the fishery and hydrographic survey. In this paper, the author carried out the turning circle test using the differential GPS and dumb card together, and compared the data measured by them and analyzed the accuracies of them to obtain the utility basic ones on the measurement of the turning circle by the DGPS. The main results area s follows : 1) To check the accuracies of the GPS, the circling experiments of 50m radius by the DGPS were made on the ground. The accuracies of turning circle measured by the DGPS were found to be very high as the errors of 1.5m. 2) the turning circle by the DGPS could be measured very accurately, by the seed, rudder angle, starboard and port respectively. 3) The turning circle measured by the dumb card was found to be measured accurately as much as the DGPS, when using large rudder angle, the turning circle was large, the turning circle by the dumb car could not be measured accurately on account of large error of bearing of compass. 4) The tactical diameters by the DGPS in case of the rudder angle 35。~5。, were found to be 2.6。15.0 times the Lpp of S.T HAELIM-3 at her slow speed 2.8~16.6 times her Lpp at her half speed, 3.1~17.4 times her Lpp at her full speed. The tactical diameter by the dumb card was found to be 2.4~9.5 times, 2.6~9.6 times, 3.2~12.2 times her Lpp respectively, in the above case and speed.
