  • Various kinds of ships(Cargo ship, Passenger ship, Training ship, Special ship etc.) are operated to transport cargo or passengers at sea in the world. Most of the important auxiliary machinery which is installed are fluid machinery in those ships. A large percentage of fluid machinery is pumps which are classified turbo and non-turbo type. While much previous research has focused on pumps for shore use, very little is known about ship's pump. In order to develop an understanding of ship's pump, we introduce common pumps used in every ship and special pumps based on ship's type. This exploratory study lays the groundwork for further investigation of ship's pumps

  • As ship's fuel oil recently becomes viscous and the amount of sludge increases, many researches and studies are underway to process the sludge onboard the ship and to recycle it as a fuel for ship's boiler. Of many researches, especially ultrasonic emulsifier to break the particle of sludge into fine pieces is recognized as a most possible recycling device. In this regards, the author investigates the property change of sludge's temperature and pressure at the early stage of the study of ultrasonic emulsifier. This study can be used as a useful dora to determine the proper temperature and pressure to inject the processed sludge in the boiler injector and the results can also be comparable dora with the experimental data by ultrasonic emulsifier. In addition, the results will be a fundamental data to study the filtering efficiency of the sludge particle broken by temperature and pressure. It is expected that this study ultimately play a role to prevent marine oil pollution as the sludge is recycled onboard the ship and used as a fuel for boiler.

  • Recently, a greater part of all ship use a coarse heavy fuel oil(HFO) over specific gravity(S.G) 1.00/15$^{\circ}C$ and viscosity 3,500 cSt/4$0^{\circ}C$ as the fuel oil of marine boiler or internal combustion engine from the viewpoint of economical ship' operation. The greater plan to improve a combustion methods of heavy fuel oil, such as atomization, homogeneity and emulsification, were contrived and carried out newly, and then applied 20kHz ultrasonic homogenizer to one of test methods. Also, adopted the marine oils(fuel oil and lubricating oil etc.) and sludge oil as test solutions, and its matrix structures were examined with photographs, Especially, it is important at control system of oil pollution, for the sludge oil emulsified, to be recycled as fuel oil of boiler according to 20kHz Ultrasonic homozenizer, and then fuel saving is attained effectively by making sludge oil to be burnt.

  • The demand of LNG as a cheap and clean energy which does not cause an environmental problem has sharply been increased in Korea. In general LNG is stored in a cargo tank specially designed as a liquid state below $-162^{\circ}C$. The main engine of a LNG carrier is generally a steam boiler because LNG is a highly flammable fluid with the possibility of explosion. The main engine of a cargo ship has to be capable of the propulsion load and various auxiliary loads for the safe navigation since it is the primary energy source. Therefore the evaluation of a main boiler's energy capacity is a key design point in the planning of LNG carrier's construction. This research is to develop the computational program for the analysis of steam boiler Heat balance for LNG carrier.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) used on ships and to consider measures for preventing worker exposure to asbestos fibers. Methods: A total of 17 ships including 16 ships under repair and a ship under construction at shipyards in Korea were investigated. Bulk samples were collected from suspected ACMs on engine exhaust pipes, boiler steam pipes, generator exhaust pipes, and etc. in ships in order to identify the presence of ACMs. Types and contents of asbestos were determined using polarized light microscopy (PLM). Results: ACMs were found from 14 ships out of 17 ships investigated. Only chrysotile asbestos was found from all samples. ACMs were mainly found from samples collected at the exhaust pipes of the engine, generator and incinerator, and boiler steam pipes where exhaust gases or steam of high temperature pass through. In most cases, types of ACMs were asbestos-containing fabrics such as asbestos tape. Friable ACMs were also found in some cases. Use of ACMs on ships was relevant to built time and owner of the ships rather than type and tonnage of the ships. Conclusions: ACMs were found from most ships built prior to 2000s. Therefore, measures for preventing asbestos-related diseases such as preparation of asbestos map on the ship and installation of warning signs, hazard communication with workers (ship-repairing workers, engine room workers and etc.), and follow-up for worker's health management are needed.

  • This research presents an innovative integrated ethanol solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system designed for applications in marine vessels. The system incorporates an exhaust gas heat recovery mechanism. The high-temperature exhaust gas produced by the SOFC is efficiently recovered through a sequential process involving a gas turbine (GT), a regenerative system, steam Rankine cycles, and a waste heat boiler (WHB). A comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of this integrated SOFC-GT-SRC-WHB system was performed. A simulation of this proposed system was conducted using Aspen Hysys V12.1, and a genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the system parameters. Thermodynamic equations based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics were utilized to assess the system's performance. Additionally, the exergy destruction within the crucial system components was examined. The system is projected to achieve an energy efficiency of 58.44% and an exergy efficiency of 29.43%. Notably, the integrated high-temperature exhaust gas recovery systems contribute significantly, generating 1129.1 kW, which accounts for 22.9% of the total power generated. Furthermore, the waste heat boiler was designed to produce 900.8 kg/h of superheated vapor at 170 ℃ and 405 kP a, serving various onboard ship purposes, such as heating fuel oil and accommodations for seafarers and equipment.

  • Heavy oil used as ship propulsion has a serious issue regarding exhaust emission of global warming. Recently, among large-scale merchant ships are using LNG as green ships so called ech-ships. In this study, an vaporizer and pipes under cryogenic and high pressure load were considered to evaluate structural integrity according to codes. Structural analysis of the vaporizer and pipes was performed using the commercial code, ANSYS. Integrity evaluation of the vaporizer based on von Mises stress was performed in accordance with allowable stress specified in ASME Boiler & Pressure Vesssel Section VIII Division 2. To assess structural integrity of the pipes, stress components were combined and compared with ASME B31.3. The calculated stresses for all load cases are lower than allowable stresses, therefore the structural integrity of equipments are verified.
