A Metamodeling Approach for Leader Progression Model-based Shielding Failure Rate Calculation of Transmission Lines Using Artificial Neural Networks

  • The performance of transmission lines and its shielding design during a lightning phenomenon are quite essential in the maintenance of a reliable power supply to consumers. The leader progression model, as an advanced approach, has been recently developed to calculate the shielding failure rate (SFR) of transmission lines using geometrical data and physical behavior of upward and downward lightning leaders. However, such method is quite time consuming. In the present paper, an effective method that utilizes artificial neural networks (ANNs) to create a metamodel for calculating the SFR of a transmission line based on shielding angle and height is introduced. The results of investigations on a real case study reveal that, through proper selection of an ANN structure and good training, the ANN prediction is very close to the result of the detailed simulation, whereas the Processing time is by far lower than that of the detailed model.

고능률 GMAW의 용접성에 미치는 보호가스의 영향 (Effect of Shielding Gases on the Weldability of High Efficient GMAW Process)

  • The possibility of new GMAW process using economic shielding gases including CO$_{2}$ gas was investigated on the effect of shielding gas on weldabilty. In the optimum welding condition using 600A power source, FCAW process showed low depositions rate, 114 g/min at 300A, but new GMAW using other mixed shielding gases exhibited high deposition rate, 208-224 g/min at 450A. TIME gas, Ar+CO$_{2}$ gas and Ar+CO$_{2}$+O$_{2}$ gas as a shielding gas were able to be used to the very high welding current(450A), moreover TIME gas and Ar+CO$_{2}$ gas showed the highest arc stability among shielding gases studied in this experiments. The weld penetration was performed by axial spray transfer mode of weld droplet. On the basis of workability, weldability and economic point of view, Ar mixture (80%Ar+20%CO$_{2}$) gas was recommended as a shielding gas for the development and application of new GMAW process. This shielding gas showed the low spatter, good weld quality, stable arc and low cost at the region of high welding current.

Performance Analysis of Low-level Radiation Shielding Sheet with Diamagnetic Nanoparticles

  • In this study, the authors attempted to produce a medical radiation shielding fiber that can be produced at a nanosize scale and that is, unlike lead, harmless to the human body. The performance of the proposed medical radiation shielding fiber was then evaluated. First, diamagnetic bismuth oxide, an element which, among elements that have a high atomic number and density, is harmless to the human body, was selected as the shielding material. Next, 10-100 nm sized nanoparticles in powder form were prepared by ball milling the bismuth oxide ($Bi_2O_3$), the average particle size of which is $1-500{\mu}m$, for approximately 10 minutes. The manufactured bismuth oxide was formed into a colloidal solution, and the radiation shielding fabric was fabricated by curing after coating the solution on one side or both sides of the fabric. The thicknesses of the shielding sheets prepared with bismuth oxide were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 1.0 mm. An experimental method was used to measure the absorbed dose and irradiation dose by using the lead equivalent test method of X-ray protection goods presented by Korean Industrial Standards; the resultant shielding rate was then calculated. From the results of this study, the X-ray shielding effect of the shielding sheet with 0.1 mm thickness was about 55.37% against 50 keV X-ray, and the X-ray shielding effect in the case of 1.0 mm thickness showed shielding characteristics of about 99.36% against 50 keV X-ray. In conclusion, it is considered that nanosized-bismuth radiation shielding fiber developed in this research will contribute to reducing the effects of primary X-ray and secondary X-ray such as when using a scattering beam at a low level exposure.

결합제 분사 방식 3D 프린팅 기술을 활용한 소아 생식기 차폐체 제작 및 유용성 평가 (Production and Utility Assessment of Pediatric Genital Shields Using 3D Printing Technology with Colorjet 3D Printing)

  • In this study, the aim was to assess the shielding performance of different 3D printing materials, specifically those produced using FDM, SLA, and CJP methods, with a focus on their application as shielding devices in clinical settings. Additionally, the weight of lead shielding materials can evoke reluctance in pediatric patients undergoing X-ray imaging. A total of 12 materials were printed using their respective 3D printers. These materials were then subjected to X-ray testing using diagnostic X-ray equipment and an exposure meter. The goal was to evaluate their shielding capabilities in comparison to 1 mm lead. The results of this evaluation revealed that VisiJet PXL-Pastel, produced using the CJP method, exhibited the highest shielding performance. Therefore, VisiJet PXL-Pastel by CJP method was selected for the creation of a shielding device designed for pediatric reproductive organs. Subsequent tests demonstrated that both the newly created shielding device and conventional lead shielding equipment achieved the same maximum shielding rate at 50 kVp. Specifically, the shielding rate for the 3D printed device was measured at 84.53%, while the conventional lead shielding equipment, categorized as Apron1 (85.74%), Apron2 (99.98%), and Apron3 (99.04%), demonstrated similar performance. In conclusion, the CJP-produced VisiJet PXL-Pastel material showcased excellent radiation shielding capabilities, allowing for anatomical observations of the target organs and their surrounding structures in X-ray images. Furthermore, its lower weight in comparison to traditional lead shielding materials makes it a clinically practical and useful choice, particularly for pediatric applications.

Mechanical properties and radiation shielding performance in concrete with electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate

  • In this study, physical properties of normal concrete, magnetite concrete, EAF concrete, and EAF concrete with added iron powder were evaluated and a feasibility of radiation shielding is also evaluated through irradiation tests against X-rays and gamma-rays. While the unit weight of EAF concrete (3.21 t/㎥) appeared lower than that of magnetite concrete (3.50 t/㎥), the results in compressive strength of EAF concrete were greater than those in magnetite and normal concrete. While the radiation transmission rate of normal concrete reaches 26.0% in the X-ray irradiation test, only 6.0% and 9.0% of transmission rate were observed in magnetite concrete and linear relationship with unit volume weight and radiation shielding. In the gamma-ray irradiation test, the performance of EAF and magnetite concretes appeared to be similar. Through the results on the excellent physical properties and radiation shielding performance a potential applicability of EAF concrete to radiation shielding was verified.

보호가스에 따른 소결체의 Nd:YAG 레이저 용접성 (Weldability in Nd:YAG Laser of Sintered Material Depend on Shielding Gases)

  • This study includes the effects of shielding gas types and flow rate on Nd:YAG Laser weldability of sintered material. The types of shielding gas were evaluated for He, Ar and N2. Bending strength, porosity rate, hardness and aspect ratio testing of laser weld are carried out to evaluated the weldability. As a results, Ar gas was showed the best welding strength even it has the most porosity content on weld metal, and depend on increases the gas flow rate, it was not only got deeper penetration depth but also showed higher bending strength. Therefore we could know that bending strength is not only affect the porosity content but also melting area.

액상 실리콘과 금속화합물을 융합한 저선량 방사선 차폐 소재 개발을 위한 사전연구 (Preliminary Study for Development of Low Dose Radiation Shielding Material Using Liquid Silicon and Metalic Compound)

  • 본 연구는 진단용 X선 에너지 영역에서 고순도의 납 0.5mm 와 실리콘(Si)과 이산화티탄($TiO_2$)을 이용한 X선 융합차폐체의 선량을 측정하고 차폐율을 비교 측정하였다. 실험을 위하여 실리콘(Si)과 이산화티탄($TiO_2$)을 혼합하여 1 mm 두께의 패드형 차폐체를 제작하고, 차폐체의 두께를 1mm 씩 증가시키며 X선을 조사하여 0 mR이 될 때까지 선량을 측정하였다. KS A 4025의 권고에 따라 X선 조사조건은 각각 60 kVp 20 mAs, 100 kVp 20 mAs로 하였으며, 두 개의 관전압 조건에서 차폐체가 없을 경우의 조사선량을 기준으로 차폐체가 있을 경우의 선량과 비교하여 차폐율을 구하였다. 두께 0.5 mm 납판 차폐체의 차폐율은 60 kVp에서 95.92%, 100 kVp에서 85.26%로 측정되었고, 실리콘(Si)과 이산화티탄($TiO_2$)패드 차폐체를 적용하였을 경우 60 kVp, 20 mAs 조건에서 두께가 11 mm 이상일 때 10회 조사 평균선량은 1.77 mR, 차폐율은 납판 0.5 mm 차폐체와 등가의 차폐율을 나타내었으며, 13 mm에서 측정선량이 0 mR이 되었다. 100 kVp, 20 mAs 조건에서는 17 mm 두께에서 납 0.5 mm 차폐체와 등가 이상의 차폐율이 관찰 되었고 23 mm 두께에서 100% 의 차폐율을 관찰할 수 있었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 실리콘-이산화티탄 화합물은 실리콘의 물성이 그대로 존재하면서 금속화합물과 융합할 수 있다는 결과를 얻었으며, 이후 방사선 흡수가 더 뛰어난 금속화합물등과 혼합할 경우 납의 위해성을 포함하지 않으며, 재료와 가공성에서 경제적이며, 실리콘의 강점을 살려 탄성과 유연성이 뛰어난 저선량용 방사선 차폐재의 제작 가능성을 확인해 볼 수 있었다.

무전해 도금법에 의한 전자파 차단 의류소재의 제조 (Preparation of Electromagnetic Wave Shielding Fabrics by Electroless Plating)

  • The purpose of this study was to produce the high quality of electromagnetic wave shielding fabrics. In this study, we have produced polyester fabrics by electroless Ag plating. The untreated polyester was etched with $4\%$ NaOH solution added accelerant(Benzyl Dimethyl Dodecyl Ammonium Chloride) then it was catalyzed by $SnCl_2$ solution and activated by $PdCl_2$ solution. Electroless Ag plating was carried out by changing conditions such as temperature. time, weight loss rate of polyester and kind of reducing agents. The electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness of polyester fabric by electroless Ag plating was measured by RF Impedance Analyzer and element of electromagnetic wave shielding substance was measured using Electron probe micro analyzer. The results were as follows; The plating bath using potassium sodium tartrate by reducing agent was excellent electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness. Element of electromagnetic wave shielding substance was silver. Electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness was shown over 64dB at the temperature of $40^{\circ}C$, treating time 30min., weight loss rate $20\%$.

DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF RADIATION SHIELDING STRUCTURE FOR LEAD SLOWING-DOWN SPECTROMETER SYSTEM

  • A lead slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) system is a promising nondestructive assay technique that enables a quantitative measurement of the isotopic contents of major fissile isotopes in spent nuclear fuel and its pyroprocessing counterparts, such as $^{235}U$, $^{239}Pu$, $^{241}Pu$, and, potentially, minor actinides. The LSDS system currently under development at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (Daejeon, Korea) is planned to utilize a high-flux ($>10^{12}n/cm^2{\cdot}s$) neutron source comprised of a high-energy (30 MeV)/high-current (~2 A) electron beam and a heavy metal target, which results in a very intense and complex radiation field for the facility, thus demanding structural shielding to guarantee the safety. Optimization of the structural shielding design was conducted using MCNPX for neutron dose rate evaluation of several representative hypothetical designs. In order to satisfy the construction cost and neutron attenuation capability of the facility, while simultaneously achieving the aimed dose rate limit (< $0.06{\mu}Sv/h$), a few shielding materials [high-density polyethylene (HDPE)eBorax, $B_4C$, and $Li_2CO_3$] were considered for the main neutron absorber layer, which is encapsulated within the double-sided concrete wall. The MCNP simulation indicated that HDPE-Borax is the most efficient among the aforementioned candidate materials, and the combined thickness of the shielding layers should exceed 100 cm to satisfy the dose limit on the outside surface of the shielding wall of the facility when limiting the thickness of the HDPE-Borax intermediate layer to below 5 cm. However, the shielding wall must include the instrumentation and installation holes for the LSDS system. The radiation leakage through the holes was substantially mitigated by adopting a zigzag-shape with concrete covers on both sides. The suggested optimized design of the shielding structure satisfies the dose rate limit and can be used for the construction of a facility in the near future.

IPEM Report-78의 엑스선 스펙트럼을 이용한 방사선 방호장비의 차폐율 계산 (Calculation of Shielding Rate of Radiation Protective Equipment Using the X-ray Spectrum of IPEM Report-78)

  • 본 연구에서는 IPEM(The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine) Report 78의 진단용 엑스선 발생장치에서 방출되는 엑스선 스펙트럼 데이터를 이용하여 의료 환경에서 사용되는 주요 엑스선 방호장비의 차폐율을 계산하고, 방사선 방호분야 적용가능성을 알아보았다. 진단용 엑스선 방호에 이용되는 납 앞치마(0.3 mmPb), 갑상샘 차폐체(0.5 mmPb), 납 고글(0.5 mmPb), 납 유리(1.8, 2.7, 3.3 mmPb)를 대상으로 에어커마와 엑스선 총강도의 감소율을 통해 방사선 차폐율을 계산하였다. 그 결과 에어커마 감소율로 계산한 차폐율은 80 kV에서 96.31~100 %범위였고, 120 kV에서는 90.35~100%범위로 나타났다. 또한 본 계산의 결과가 실제 차폐율 측정한 선행연구결과와 잘 일치하여 IPEM Report 78의 엑스선 스펙트럼 데이터가 방사선 방호에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
