  • Safe operation and maintenance of engineered dry storage systems for spent fuel from nuclear power plants basically depends on adequately adopted design requirements. The most important design target of the system are those which provide the necessary assurances that spent fuel can be received, handled, stored and retrieved without undue risk to health and safety of workers and the public. To achieve these objectives, the design of the system incorporates features to remove spent fuel residual heat, to provide for radiation protection, and to maintain containment over the lifespan of the system as specified in the design specifications. The features also provide for all possible anticipated operational occurrences and design basis events in accordance with the design basis as guided by the designated regulations. The general performance requirements of a projected storage system are introduced in this paper. The storage system is designed to store fuel assemblies in associated with designated regulatory requirements. Small increases/decreases in maximum burnup can be adjusted with cooling time. These variations are compensated for by a corresponding small site-specific increase/decrease in the design basis-cooling period, as long as the maximum heat load and radioactivity of loaded fuel assemblies are met. Generic design basis events considered for the storage system are summarized. Shielding and radiological requirements along with mechanical and structural are derived in this study.

  • A coil-type capacitive sensor on which the deterioration of the car engine oil can be in situ measured, has been developed. The sensor was designed to get over 10 pF at the limited space on the drain hole of the oil pan. The design factors for stable capacitance measurement such as coil diameter and winding condition, materials and configuration of the coil former, and shielding method, etc., were known by both computer simulation and experimental investigations. The dielectric properties measured by several sensors for an used sample oil were consisted within 0.25%. The sensor installed on the car having severe vibration, temperature and humidity fluctuation, even electromagnetic noise, has shown very distinguishable results.

  • Neutron Streaming analysis in 1300 MWe pressurized water reactor cavity was performed. In this calculation, the discrete ordinates transport codes, ANISN and DOT 3.5, and the Monte Carlo code, TRIPOLI-02 were used with the coupling code, DOTTRI. In this study IBM 3033 type computer was used. The calculated neutron fluxes and dose rates were compared with the measured data in a 900MWe pressurized water reactor cavity to show a good agreement, although some deviations in the results for each energy group were noticed. These results will be applied in the radiation shielding design of high capacity nuclear power reactors and, to the means of radiation protection in case of the reactor maintenance and the access of the reactor cavity.

  • The absorption and the interference shielding of the problems thor both commercial and military purposes. In this study, the minimization of the electromagnetic wale reflections using composite layers with different dielectric properties was performed. Dielectric constants were measured for glass/epoxy composites containing conductive carbon blacks and carbon/epoxy fabric composites. Using the measured permittivities of the composites having various carbon black contents, the optimal electromagnetic wave absorbing structure in X-band(8.2GHz-12.4GHz) was determined. The optimal multi-layered composite plates have the thickness of 2.6mm. The maximum reflection loss is -30dB at 10GHz, and the bandwidth haying the absorptivity lower than -l0dB is about 2GHz.

  • The electron beam machining provides very high resolution up to nanometer scale, hence the E-Beam writing technology is rapidly growing in MEMS and nano-engineering areas. For E-Beam machining, $2^{nd}$ electron detector is required to see a machined sample at the stage. The $2^{nd}$ electron detector is composed of scintillator and photomultiplier with signal amplifier and high voltage power supplier. Since a photomultiplier tube is an extremely high-sensitivity photodetector, the signal light level to be detected is very low and therefore particular care must be exercised in shielding external light. In this paper, the design methodology of $2^{nd}$ electron detector and the image noise removal method are introduced.

  • This paper presents an approach for evaluating directionality effects for both wind speeds and wind loads in hurricane-prone regions. The focus of this study is on directional wind loads on low-rise structures. Using event-based simulation, hurricane directionality effects are determined for an open-terrain condition at various locations in the southeastern United States. The wind speed (or wind load) directionality factor, defined as the ratio of the N-year mean recurrence interval (MRI) wind speed (or wind load) in each direction to the non-directional N-year MRI wind speed (or wind load), is less than one but increases toward unity with increasing MRI. Thus, the degree of conservatism that results from neglecting directionality effects decreases with increasing MRI. It may be desirable to account for local exposure effects (siting effects such as shielding, orientation, etc.) in design. To account for these effects in a directionality adjustment, the factor described above for open terrain would need to be transformed to other terrains/exposures. A "local" directionality factor, therefore, must effectively combine these two adjustments (event directionality and siting or local exposure directionality). By also considering the direction-specific aerodynamic coefficient, a direction-dependent wind load can be evaluated. While the data necessary to make predictions of directional wind loads may not routinely be available in the case of low-rise structures, the concept is discussed and illustrated in this paper.

  • The function of the thermal shield(TS) is to eliminate the thermal radiation from the room temperature side to the coil temperature(4.5K) region so as to reduce the thermal load on the He refrigerator. The TS is composed of multilayer insulation(MLI) which is coated very thin aluminum on the insulating material, cryopanel which is cooled by cold gaseous He, and supports which stand the cryopanel and MLI on the room temperature part. The thermal shield for the TF coils and PF coils has been located between the coils and vacuum vessel. The thermal shielding cryopanel is cooled under 80 K by a forced flow of helium gas using cooling pipes on the cryopanel.

The cable cryostat consists of two corrugated seamless aluminum tubes as its high sealing reliability, the tubes separated through a spacer arrangement. Outdoor termination was developed by LS cable and cryogenic system by CVE for 154kV, 1GVA class HTS cable. The 154kV, 1GVA HTS cable will be installed and be tested in KEPCO Gochang Testing Center from June 2010.

  • A betavoltaic battery was prepared using radioactive $^{63}Ni$ attached to a three-dimensional single trenched P-N absorber. The optimum thickness of a $^{63}Ni$ layer was determined to be approximately $2{\mu}m$, considering the minimum self-shielding effect of beta particles. Electroplating of radioactive $^{63}Ni$ on a nickel (Ni) foil was carried out at a current density of $20mA/cm^2$. The difference of the short-circuit currents ($I_{sc}$) between the pre- and post-deposition of $^{63}Ni$ (16.65 MBq) on the P-N junction was 5.03 nA, as obtained from the I-V characteristics. An improved design with a sandwich structure was provided for enhancing performance.

  • In GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) processes, bead geometry (penetration, bead width and height) is a criterion to estimate welding quality. Bead geometry is affected by welding current, arc voltage and travel speed, shielding gas, CTWD (contact-tip to workpiece distance) and so on. In this paper, welding process variables were selected as welding current, arc voltage and travel speed. And bead geometry was reasoned from the chosen welding process variables using neuro-fuzzy algorithm. Neural networks was applied to design FL(fuzzy logic). The parameters of input membership functions and those of consequence functions in FL were tuned through the method of learning by backpropagation algorithm. Bead geometry could be reasoned from welding current, arc voltage, travel speed on FL using the results learned by neural networks. On the developed inference system of bead geometry using neuro-furzy algorithm, the inference error percent of bead width was within $\pm$4%, that of bead height was within $\pm$3%, and that of penetration was within $\pm$8%. Neural networks came into effect to find the parameters of input membership functions and those of consequence in FL. Therefore the inference system of welding quality expects to be developed through proposed algorithm.
