  • One of the typically simple structures in protected horticulture is the rain shelter, which is widely applied in summer regardless of its poor ventilation. To evaluate ventilation performance of rain shelters, the ventilation rate as well as inside temperature of one conventional and two improved rain shelters were predicted and compared under various wind speeds and irradiations. More accurate model in which the inside space of rain shelter was subdivided into three parts considering the crops grown, was developed. The ventilation rate of each opening and the general direction of air flow in the rain shelter can be predicted by the model. The ventilation rates as well as inside temperatures of each rain shelter obtained by the model and the actual measurement, proved that the ventilation performance of improved rain shelters were superior to that of conventional one.

  • Currently, the establishment and management of civil defense shelters are under the initiative of the government and local governments to protect the lives of citizens. In the future, there is a need for efficient civil defense shelters operation through the expansion of general shelters, including designated dedicated shelters. Therefore, it is more efficient to consider the distribution of residents and the location of access to shelters, not the quantitative operation considering only the number of residents. This study uses genetic algorithms and Huff gravity model based on census output data, building data, and road network information to understand the distribution of inhabitants more precisely than existing administrative district data. In addition, the spatial- database was used for efficient data management and fast processing, and if this study is improved, it can be used as a basis for the selection and improvement of general shelters positioning for a wider area.

  • This study intends to analyze the accessibility to the evacuation shelters according to pedestrian characteristics for Shinpo-district and Haewoon district, Masan Happo-gu, Changwon, designated as Disaster Risk Districts(Typhoon and Storm Surge Risk Zones) due to the typhoon and surge disasters of the past such as Typhoon RUSA or MAEMI. Evacuation speed was analyzed by dividing the types of evacuees into children, general adults, and the aged people by considering physical conditions. In the case of Haewoon district, currently designated evacuation shelters appeared to be appropriate. But in the case of Sinpo district, over 50% of designated Disaster Risk Districts appeared to be evacuation-vulnerable zones in the case of the aged. Therefore, three additional shelters were designated to complement these problems. The results reveal that the problems about the evacuation-vulnerable zones in the case of the existing designated shelters, appeared to be improved. It is expected that the results, obtained in this study will be utilized to establish the complementary measures to analyze the evacuation risk and solve the problems.

  • We examined activities of adult (n=9, 3 females and 6 males) and juvenile (n=4) Schlegel's Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus) in an indoor vivarium for 47 days to study the preference and competition for shelters at day and night. The result showed the strong correlation between the temperature inside the shelter and the body temperature of Schlegel's Japanese gecko and more individuals observed outside the shelters at nighttime than daytime. Both adults and juveniles showed a preference for certain shelters. The adults preferred the warmer shelters in the daytime while the juveniles preferred the same shelter in both daytime and nighttime. Both adults and juveniles observed outside the shelter at the nighttime had higher body temperature than those found inside. In the daytime, the body temperature of adults was higher than that of juveniles, but there was no significant difference in the nighttime. The results imply that G. japonicus, which is the nocturnal lizard, prefers the shelters with higher temperature and that there is the competition for shelters between adults and juveniles. This study provides the reference data on the relationships between the body temperature and the activities of G. japonicus.

  • Various studies have been conducted to analyze the location appropriateness and capacity of shelters. However, research on how to select new shelters is relatively insufficient. Since the shelter is designated in case of emergency, it is also necessary to efficiently select the location of the shelter. Therefore, this study presented a method for selecting the location of the shelter using network analysis that has been used to analyze the location appropriateness of shelters and genetic algorithm which is a representative heuristic algorithm. First, the network analysis using the existing civil defense evacuation facility data was performed and the result showed that the vulnerability of evacuation has a high deviation by region in the study area. In order to minimize the evacuation vulnerable area, the genetic algorithm was designed then the location of new shelters was determined. The initial solution consisting of candidate locations of new shelters was randomly generated and the optimal solution was found through the process of selection, crossover, and mutation. As a result of the experiment, the area with a high percentage of the evacuation vulnerable areas was prioritized and the effectiveness of the proposed method could be confirmed. The results of this study is expected to contribute to the positioning of new shelters and the establishment of an efficient evacuation plan in the future.

  • Most of the important stone cultural heritage (National treasures and Treasures) in Korea are mainly located outdoor and considerably affected by the changes of the temperature, humidity and rainfalls. 541 of the stone cultural heritage are preserved as National treasure and Treasure. The pagodas occupy 187 remains and next 127 Buddha statues, 68 monuments, 60 stupas, and the others 74 stone cultural heritages. The shelter has been installed for one pagoda, 60 Buddha statues, 36 monuments and two stupas. The shelters are categorized in three shapes as traditional shape, modern shape, and others (tradition+modern). Approximately 100 of shelters that have constructed in traditional ways, and about nine of shelters have modern ways, and the only one has the combination shape of tradition and modern, which has been constructed since mid 1900s and repaired from the 1980s~2000s. Many researchers are studying for improvement of manners such as repairing, remodeling or removing of the shelter because problems have occured on shelters. Architectural form of traditional style of Korean timber building is respected, but it has problems on importing natural sunlight to the inside as well as ventilation and spacial problems. However, it needs to supplement policies to improve the positive roles of shelters such as prevention of artificial damage, blocking acid rain, and so on. For instance, the rock-carved Buddha Triad in Seosan, it had problems with viewing, contamination, and dew condensation on the surface. These problems decreased after dismantling the shelter, the space was made for improvement of viewing and dew condensation, and moisture problems were in better conditions. The velocity wind is an important factor in drying conditions on the surface of the rock, therefore the condition has improved after dismantling the shelter.

  • In this study, we analyzed the relationship between five factors: long-wave radiation, short-wave radiation, cloudiness, SVF and summer shelters. In the previous study, we recognized the correlation between single building SVF and long-wave radiation. Furthermore, this study attempted to confirm the relationship at the summer shelter with high solar radiation blocking rate. The observations are as follows. ① Cooling in summer shelters was not the effect of temperature but the effect of radiation reduction due to short-wave radiation shielding. ② In the case of the canopy tent with low heat capacity, the long-wave radiation was observed to be 16.7% higher per hour than the comparison control point due to the increase in surface temperature. ③ The long-wave radiation increase rate was different according to SVF, but showed very similar pattern according to the material characteristics of the summer shelters. ④ Passive Cooling effect on the type of summer shelters are determined by the size of the total long and short-wave radiation at that point.

  • South Korea people and government pour growing interest on emergency evacuation shelters due to recent threatening of North Korea provocation. However, survey says the border area suffers lack of 278 shelters compared to population, needless to say the lack of class-2 shelter in case of provocation. Firstly, this study visualized the evacuation buffer area and summarized acceptable population for all class (1~4) shelters in Cheoan neighbor(dong). Specifically, for the class-2 shelter coverage in old downtown neighbor (Sungjung-dong, Jungang-dong, Munsung-dong), this study calculated evacuation excluded population and deficient shelter area through GIS buffer analysis. As a result, the old downtown needs $25,546m^2$ shelter area more that can accommodate 56%(30,657man) of the population.

  • Fine Dust in Korea has been classified as a social disaster since 2019 due to continuous increase in concentration of Particulate Matter 10(PM 10) and PM 2.5. The fine dust issue has negative physical and mental impacts, especially on vulnerable population including children and the elderly. Seoul metropolitan government have installed fine dust shelters since 2019. However, there is a lack of research that evaluates spatiotemporal distribution of these facilities. Therefore, the first aim of this study is to find the relationship between PM levels and dust scattering construction sites, or air pollutant emission sites through in depth spatial analyses. The second purpose is to analyze the spatial distribution of PM shelters in Seoul, and to evaluate the location efficiency of them. Kernel density, krigging, and network analyses were conducted, and floating population was considered instead of census data for this research. The reults of network analysis based on the road system showed that Yangcheon-gu, Songpa-gu, Seongbuk-gu, and Dobong-gu were found to need additional fine dust shelters. Also, the results from analyzing the floating population that includes children and the elderly showed that Songpa-gu, Seodaemun-gu, Gangdong-gu, Seocho-gu, and Dongdaemun-gu need more placements of find dust shelters. The results of this study are expected to provide implications for urban planners to enhance find dust shelter placement in urban areas, and vulnerable population issues would be considered in many ways.
