  • Purpose : When natural disaster occurs, the victims are evacuated to temporary shelters such as indoor gymnasiums or large space buildings until their homes are recovered. If someone in this temporary shelter is infected with an airborne infectious disease, it becomes easier for the disease to spread to the other people in the shelter than it would be under normal conditions. Therefore, temporary shelters need to provide not only water and food but also hygienic indoor conditions. Methods : In this study, the use of mechanical systems such as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems and air cleaners were simulated using numerical analysis to find out how these systems can control airborne infection in temporary shelters. An indoor gymnasium was selected as a temporary shelter for the numerical simulation model considering Korea's post-disaster response system. Influenza A virus was assumed as an airborne infectious disease and the diffusion of the virus was made by one person in the shelter. Results : The result of this study showed that the UVGI systems disinfected the virus more effectively than the air cleaners by creating a more stable airflow after the disinfection process. The air cleaners could remove the virus but since it created an unstable airflow in the temporary shelter, the virus was condensed to a certain area to show a higher virus concentration level than the source location. Implications : In the temporary shelter, it is necessary to use UVGI systems or air cleaners for hygienic indoor conditions.

  • North Korea has been preparing for WMD(Weapons Mass Destruction) using asymmetric force since it recognized the economic effects of CBR (Chemical, Biological, Radiological) weapons system operation and the limitations of conventional weapons. However, the threat only to conventional bombs, missiles and etc. is considered on the current Civil Defense Shelter, which could increase civil damages, not responding appropriately to disasters such as CBR weapons, terror attacks and etc. Therefore, this study confirms the current situation of Civil Defense Shelter and design criteria focused on CBR disasters so that we could make a plan and design of Civil Defense Shelter. In addition, we suggest the research result and improvements on Civil Defense Shelter and Design.

  • Growth of 6-year old 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) trees and control of insect and disease occurrences were compared between fermented soybean extracts and rain-shelter system for two years. Foliar application of fermented soybean extracts was applied at 6 times as a pre-experiment in the open-field in 2013, with a rain-shelter system in 2014. Fermented soybean extract treatment increased foliar concentrations of approximately 0.46% T-N, 0.17% K, 0.19% Ca, and 0.06% Mg in 2013 compared to the control, with similar macro-nutrients between the control and soybean extract treatment observed in 2014. Rain-shelter system increased foliar concentrations of T-N, Ca, and Mg compared to the open-field. There were no significantly different between the control and soybean extract treatment for number of leaves per fruit, leaf dry weight, phytotoxicity, and completed shoot growth on August during the two years. Rain-shelter system increased leaf dry weight and did not affect phytotoxicity in the leaves. Fruit quality parameters were mostly similar to control and soybean extract treatment for two years, with higher fruit firmness observed for soybean extract treatment. Rain-shelter system advanced 4 days of harvest dates, and increased approximately 7.0 ton fruit yield per ha, 20 g mean fruit weight, and fruit soluble solid contents compared to open-field in 2014. Soybean extract treatment little suppressed occurrence of disease and insect on the leaves and fruits in both years. Rain-shelter system increased occurrence of Venturia nashicola on the leaves and to 63.8% of Gymnosporangium asiaticum on the fruits in 2014. Strong winds and storms in May elevated relative humidity in the rain-shelter system and caused high infection of the disease occurrence, requiring for an additional green control method. Soybean extract treatment little affected tree growth and would have initiated for a long-term study to evaluate tree physiological characteristics. Rain-shelter system improved fruit productivity and advanced harvest dates, which could have been more effective facility at a Thanks Giving Day between middle and end of September.

  • Recently, natural disasters such as earthquake, tsunami, typhoon and tornado are increasing, and cause huge economical loses and victim. Thus, when the disaster occurs, it is important to prepare emergency evacuation shelters for fast and easy construction compared to general building system. And, deployable structures will provide a great help for such aim. Deployable structures have the great advantage of being faster and easier to erect and dismantle compared to conventional building forms. In this study, we confirm the possibility of deployment for shelter structures using scissor structure system. First, Basic model was performed to recognize the appllicability of the deployable systems of the dome-shaped structure. Second, Advanced model that more improved inner space and deployment mechanism was confirmed.

  • As large-scale buildings, skyscrapers, and multi-purpose buildings recently increase in numbers dramatically, the internal space of such buildings becomes more and more large and complicated accordingly. Since such structures usually accommodate a number of random people, the potential possibilities of disastrous tragedies are high, and the rates of injury and physical damage caused by the complicated system of the building also increase as well. However, most of the shelter designs of the existing buildings are based on the specifications according to the assigned laws and involved regulations. In this case, only general criteria are referred to regardless of the characteristics of each structure while other disaster-related features are not taken into consideration sufficiently. Since any actual fire may cause a terrible calamity, in such plans, shelter inducement can be neither safe nor effective. Thus, this study examines and analyzes currently run disaster prevention systems and shelter inducement facilities with COEX Mall as its subject, and analyzes the responding system to each situation based on the fire scenarios by means of As-Is Model. Through this analysis, presented are the measures to solve the problems of current disaster prevention systems and to improve shelter inducement methods effectively.

  • This study set out to evaluate the fitness of shelter locations by taking into consideration service zones according to walking speed, the changing population between day and night, and walking routes. Walking speed was defined as 1.6 m/s, 2 m/s based on the cases of previous studies. The changing population between day and night was estimated with the dasymetric mapping technique. Shelter service zones according to walking speed and routes were analyzed with the network of the location allocation model. The findings show some shelters had limits with their capacity according to the changing floating population and walking speed in time and space and raise a need to appoint additional shelters.
