  • The metamorphosis and the growth of larva in Limnoperna fortunei were studied from October, 1981 to December, 1983. 1) The larva of this species is observed in the three different stages in the form of D-shaped. The shell length of the larva in the early stage is $130.44{\mu}m$ to $143.60{\mu}m$ and in the middle stage $161.67{\mu}m$ to $184.11{\mu}m$. In the late stage the length size of the larva increases up to $194.55{\mu}m$ to $208.45{\mu}m$. The shell height is $103.19{\mu}m$, to $119.47{\mu}m$, $126.51{\mu}m$ to $157.63{\mu}m$ and $136.87{\mu}m$ to $176.35{\mu}m$ in the three stages respectively. Thus the growth ratio of shell length to shell height is 1:0.75. 2) The metamorphosing stage begins when the shell height becomes larger than $210{\mu}m$ and the shell length exceedes $260{\mu}m$.

  • Free vibration of layered conical shell frusta of thickness filled with fluid is investigated. The shell is made up of isotropic or specially orthotropic materials. Three types of thickness variations are considered, namely linear, exponential and sinusoidal along the radial direction of the conical shell structure. The equations of motion of the conical shell frusta are formulated using Love's first approximation theory along with the fluid interaction. Velocity potential and Bernoulli's equations have been applied for the expression of the pressure of the fluid. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible, inviscid and quiescent. The governing equations are modified by applying the separable form to the displacement functions and then it is obtained a system of coupled differential equations in terms of displacement functions. The displacement functions are approximated by cubic and quintics splines along with the boundary conditions to get generalized eigenvalue problem. The generalized eigenvalue problem is solved numerically for frequency parameters and then associated eigenvectors are calculated which are spline coefficients. The vibration of the shells with the effect of fluid is analyzed for finding the frequency parameters against the cone angle, length ratio, relative layer thickness, number of layers, stacking sequence, boundary conditions, linear, exponential and sinusoidal thickness variations and then results are presented in terms of tables and graphs.

  • The main aim of this study was to develop carrot soups with fishery products, which is improved from traditional gruel of Cheju island. For this the optimal procedure and ingredient mixing ratio for making basic carrot soup was determined through the instrumental measurement, the sensory evaluation and the nutrient analysis, and then the carrot-fishery soups were prepared by mixing the fishery products from Cheju island. The results were as follows: The optimal procedure for making basic carrot soup was to saute the sliced carrots and soaked rices with the sesame oil for 5 min, add the water, bring to a boil for 6 min, simmer for 15 min, then puree the soup. The optimal ingredient mixing ratio in the basic carrot soup was carrot 300 g: rice 45 g: water 900 $m\ell$: sesame oil 15 $m\ell$: salt 5 g. For preparing carrot-fishery soups were the optimal fishery products mixing ratio i) 30% tile fish or crab, ii) prawn, abalone, top shell, or ear shell 20%, iii) sea urchin 15%, iv) fusiform or gulf weed 5%. The order of sensory evaluation scores, on a 5-point scale, were sea urchin, crab > top shell, tile fish > abalone, ear shell > prawn > coral fish > fusiform, gulf weed. Nutrient composition analysis showed that vitamin A was 5 times higher in carrot soup than in pumpkin soup. Sensory evaluation scores show that carrot soup was prepared to pumpkin soup. A portion (200 g) of the soup would provide 144% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A. The results of this work indicate that an acceptable carrot-fishery soups of better nutritional and sensory values than pumpkin soup can be prepared.

  • This study was carried out on the ark shell Scapharca broughtonii in order to examine if organotin compounds, which are known to induce reproductive abnormalities in gastropods, have the same affect on bivalves. The research was conducted during seven weeks in spring season through a field transplantation experiment in one reference area (Ra) and two organotin-polluted areas (Opa) near a shipyard complex. Sex ratio in the Ra was 1:1.6 (female:male). Sex ratio in Opa I and Opa II were 1:0.49 and 1:1.03, respectively, illustrating slightly higher proportion of females. Gonad activity exhibited a sequence of Opa II>Ra>Opa I. Intersex individuals of 3.33% (n=4/120) were confirmed in Opa. Intersex gonads were observed only in females. The results show that organotin compounds caused reproductive disruption in Scapharca broughtonii.

  • An extremum method is presented to predict the wrinkling characteristics of the inflated cone in bending. The wrinkling factor is firstly defined so as to obtain the wrinkling condition. The initial wrinkling location is then determined by searching the maximum of the wrinkling factor. The critical wrinkling load is finally obtained by determining the ratio of the wrinkling moment versus the initial wrinkling location. The extremum method is proposed based on the assumption of membrane material of beam wall, and it is extended to consider beam wall with thin-shell material in the end. The nondimensional analyses show that the initial wrinkling location is closely related to the taper ratio. When the taper ratio is higher than the critical value, the initial wrinkles will be initiated at a different location. The nondimensional critical wrinkling load nonlinearly increases as the taper ratio increases firstly, and then linearly increases after the critical taper ratio. The critical taper ratio reflects the highest load-carrying efficiency of the inflated cone in bending, and it can be regarded as a measure to optimize the geometry of the inflated cone. The comparative analysis shows fairly good agreement between analytical and numerical results. Over the whole range of the comparison, the mean differences are lower than 3%. This gives confidence to use extremum method for bending-wrinkling analysis of inflated conical cantilever beam.

  • The analytical solutions for the free vibration and buckling of cross-ply laminated composite cylindrical shell with axial stiffeners(stringers) and circumferential stiffeners(rings), that is, orthogonally stiffened shells, are presented using the energy method. The stiffeners are assumed to be an integral part of the shell and have been directly included in analysis(it's called discrete stiffener theory). The effect of the parameters such as the stacking sequences, the shell thickness, the shell length-to-radius ratio are studied. By comparison with the previously published analytical results for the stiffened cylindrical shells, it is shown that natural frequencies can be determined with adequate accuracy.

  • Thermal Buckling and free vibration analyses of multi-layered composite conical shells based on a layerwise displacement theory are performed. The Donnell's displacement-strain relationships of conical shell structure are applied. The natural frequencies are compared with the ones existing in the previous literature for laminated conical shells with several cone semi-vertex angles. Moreover, the thermal buckling behaviors of the laminated conical shell are investigated to consider the effect of the semi-vertex angle, subtended angle, and radius to thickness ratio on the structural stability.

  • This paper is studied on the Junctiion of the large tank and the cylinderical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached a pipe or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle, so it can be approximated that nozzle is attached to plate. The analysis procedure can be viewed as the solution of interdependent subproblems: (a) the stress analysis of the cylinderical shell(nozzle), (b) the plane-stress analysis of the plate membrane problem, and (c) the analysis of the transverse bending deformation in the plate. On the procedure of (a), the Flugge formula are used, and the variables are the length and the ratio of the thickness to the radius of cylinderical shell. The solutions of thess problems are interrelated in the total solution through continuity and equilibrium conditions at the interface of middle planes of the plate and cylinderical shell.

  • The surface of 3D shell structure is created by using NURBS and nodes for generating finite element mesh on the surface are created by using external node offset method. In so doing the shortest distance between nodes on the top and bottom surface is searched and then the coordinates of nodes are determined by calculating the mid point of them in the middle of top and bottom surface. Triangular elements are formed on mid surface, and the average aspect ratio of the generated triangular elements are over 0.9.
