  • The numerical investigations have been carried out on deep beam with opening subjected to static monotonic loading to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the finite element based numerical models. The simulations were carried out through finite element program ABAQUS/CAE and the results thus obtained were validated with the experiments available in literature. Six simply supported beams were modelled with two square openings of 200 and 250 mm sides considered as opening at centre, top and bottom of the beam. In order to define the material behaviour of concrete and reinforcing steel bar the Concrete Damaged Plasticity model and Johnson-Cook material parameters available in literature were employed. The numerical results were compared with the experiments in terms of ultimate failure load, displacement and von-Mises stresses. In addition to that, seventeen beams were simulated under static loading for studying the effect of opening location, size and shape of the opening and depth, span and shear span to depth ratio of the deep beam. In general, the numerical results accurately predicted the pattern of deformation and displacement and found in good agreement with the experiments. It was concluded that the structural response of deep beam was primarily dependent on the degree of interruption of the natural load path. An increase in opening size from 200 to 250 mm size resulted in an average shear strength reduction of 35%. The deep beams having circular openings undergo lesser deflection and thus they are preferable than square openings. An increase in depth from 500 mm to 550 mm resulted in 78% reduced deflection.

  • This paper presents the shear behavior in reinforced normal and high-strength concrete beams with Belite cement due to the increase of concrete compressive strength. The shear tests were conducted on thirty two beam specimens having concrete compressive strengths of 350 and 600kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The major experimental variables are compressive strength of concrete, shear span to depth ratio, and shear reinforcement ratio. The shear responses as to each variable are discussed in terms of shear capacity. The comparison of prediction equations with test results is also presented.

  • This study is aimed to evaluate the shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams subject to concentrated loads, using a simplified strut-tie model. For the shear strength prediction of deep beams, it is prerequisite to evaluate the effective width of strut and to verify the efficiency factors proposed by MacGregor et al.. The results analyzed by truss models have been compared with those calculated by domestic code for the existing data of 90 deep beam specimens. The shear strength of deep beams were reviewed with respect to concrete strength, the shear span-depth ratio, and the ratio of web reinforcements. The results showed that the shear strength of the proposed model gave a better agreement than the domestic code approach.

  • Sixteen reinforced concrete beams were tested statically up to failure to investigate the arch action. Major variables were the shear span to depth ratio, steel ratio and existence of stirrups. The arch action in reinforced concrete beams started when flexural cracks appeared at the center of the span. Due to the reduction of internal moment arm length by the development of arch action, the measured steel tension was significantly higher than the calculated. As the shear span to depth ratio arid steel ratio decrease, the arch action in reinforced concrete eams increases. Over the entire length the force in the steel of no web reinforced beams having smaller a /d ratio than 3 was constant because the beams acted as a tied arch.

  • To evaluate the proposed shear strength models developed in a companion paper, the shear strengths of test specimens strengthened with FRP were predicted by ACl specification, and elsewhere. The advantage and disadvantage of the models were investigated by the comparisons with the test results. The characteristics and limitations of the existing model were investigated with respect to FRP types, strengthening methods, shear span to depth ratio and effective strength of FRP. The results of this parametric study showed that the proposed shear strength model is more accurate than other models.

  • Ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) is characterized by a post-cracking residual tensile strength with a large tensile strain as well as a high compressive strength. To determine a material tensile strength of UHPFRC, three-point loading test on notched prism and direct tensile test on doubly notched plate were compared and then the design tensile strength is decided. Shear tests on nine I-shaped beams with varied types of fiber volume ratio, shear span ratio and size effect were conducted to investigate shear behavior in web. From the test results, the stress redistribution ability represented as diagonal cracked zone was quantified by inclination of principal stress in web. The test results shows that the specimens were capable of resistance to shear loading without stirrup in a range of large deformation and the strength increase with post-cracking behavior is stable. However at the ultimate state all test specimens failed as a crack localization in the damaged zone and the shear strength of specimens is affected by shear span ratio and effective depth. Strength predictions show that the existing recommendations should be modified considering shear span ratio and effective depth as design parameters.

  • Test results of four reinforced concrete two-span continuous deep beams are summarized. Main variables were the configuration of web opening reinforcement. Shear span-to-overall depth ratio and the size of the web opening were fixed by 1.0 and 0.5 a $\times$ 0.2 h, respectively. To control diagonal crack and enhance strength, it can be recommended that diagonal reinforcement crossing the crack plane joining between loading points and corner of openings should be provided.

  • This paper predicted the shear behavior of reinforced concrete columns using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) considered the effects of bending moment and axial force. Nine columns with various shear span- to-depth ratios and axial force ratios were tested to verify the theoretical results obtained from TATM. Fine linear displacement transducers (LVDT) were attached to a side of the column near the shear critical region to measure the curvature, the longitudinal and transverse axial deformations, and the shear deformation of the column. The test was terminated when the value of the applied load dropped to about $85\%$ of the maximum-recorded load in the post-peak descending branch. All the columns were failed in shear before yielding of the flexural steel. The shear strength and the stiffness of the columns increased, as the axial force increased and the shear span-to-depth ratio decreased. Shear stress-shear strain and shear stress-strain of shear reinforcement curves obtained from TATM were agreed well with the test results in comparison to other truss models (MCFT, RA-STM, and FA-STM).

  • An exact dynamic analytical method for free vibrations of continuous partial-interaction composite beams is proposed based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The main advantage of this method is that the independent shear deformations and rotary inertia of sub-beams are considered, which is more in line with the reality. Therefore, the accuracy of eigenfrequencies obtained by this method is significantly improved, especially for higher order modes, compared to the existing methods where the rotary angles of both sub-beams are assumed to be equal irrespective of the differences in the shear stiffness of each sub-beam. Furthermore, the solutions obtained by the proposed method are exact owing to no introduction of approximated displacement and force fields in the derivation. In addition, an exact analytical solution for the case of simply supported is obtained. Based on this, an approximate expression for the fundamental frequency of continuous partial-interaction composite beams is also proposed, which is useful for practical engineering applications. Finally, the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed method and the approximate expression are explored using numerical and experimental examples; The influence factors including the interfacial interaction, shear modulus ratio, span-to-depth ratio, and side-to-main span length ratio on the eigenfrequencies are presented and discussed in detail.
