  • Carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) have gained increased application in aerospace structures because of their specific strength and stiffness, but are sensitive to impact-induced damage. An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the impact resistance of CFRP according to the ply angle. The specimens of angle ply laminate composites were employed with [0.deg. $_{6}$/ .deg.$_{10}$/0.deg.$_{6}$], in which 6 kinds of ply angle such as .deg.=15.deg., 30.deg., 45.deg., 60.deg., 75.deg. and 90.deg. were selected. The impact tests were conducted using the air gun type impact testing machine by steel balls of diameter of 5 mm and 10 mm, and impact-induced damages were evaluated under same impact speed of V=60m/s. The impact damaged zones were observed through a scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). The obtained results were summarized as follows: (1) Delaminations on the interfacial boundaries showed th directional characteristics to the fiber directions. The delamination area on the impact side (interface A) was considerably smaller compared to that of the opposite side (interface B). (2) Cracks corresponding to other delaminations than those mentioned in SAM photographs were also seen on the impact damaged zone. (3) The delamination patterns were affected by the ply-angle, the dimensions of the specimen, and the boundary conditions. (4) The impact damaged zone showed zone showed the delamination on the interfacial boundaries, transverse shear cracks of the surface layer, and bending cracks of the bottom layer.r.r.r.

  • A fabric of soil media may change due to certain factors such as dissolution of soluble particles, desiccation, and cementation. The fabric changes affect the mechanical behavior of soils. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of geo-material dissolution on shear strength. Experiments and numerical simulations are carried out by using a conventional direct shear and the discrete element method. The dissolution specimens are prepared with different volumetric salt fraction in sand soils. The dissolution of the specimens is implemented by saturating the salt-sand mixtures at different confining stresses in the experimental study or reducing the sizes of soluble particles in the numerical simulations. Experimental results show that the angle of shearing resistance decreases with the increase in the soluble particle content and the shearing behavior changes from dilative to contractive behavior. The numerical simulations exhibit that macro-behavior matches well with the experimental results. From the microscopic point of view, the particle dissolution produces a new fabric with the increase of local void, the reduction of contact number, the increase of shear contact forces, and the anisotropy of contact force chains compared with the initial fabric. The shearing behavior of the mixture after the particle dissolution is attributed to the above micro-behavior changes. This study demonstrates that the reduction of shearing resistance of geo-material dissolution should be considered during the design and construction of the foundation and earth-structures.

  • Purpose: Considering the rising frequency of earthquakes in Korea, it is crucial to revise the rainfall thresholds for landslide triggering following earthquake events. This study was conducted to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for adjusting rainfall thresholds for landslide early warnings after earthquakes through soil physical experiments. Method: The study analyzed the change in soil shear strength by direct shear tests on disturbed and undisturbed samples collected from cut slopes. Also, The study analyzed the soil strength parameters of remolded soil samples subjected to drying and wetting conditions, focusing on the relationship between the degree of saturation after submergence and the strength parameters. Result: Compaction water content variation in direct shear tests showed that higher water content and saturation in disturbed samples led to a significant decrease in cohesion (over 50%) and a reduction in shear resistance angle (1~2°). Additionally, during the ring shear tests, the shear strength was observed to gradually decrease once water was supplied to the shear plane. The maximum shear strength decreased by approximately 65-75%, while the residual shear strength decreased by approximately 53-60%. Conclusion: Seismic activity amplifies landslide risk during subsequent rainfall, necessitating proactive mitigation strategies in earthquake-prone areas. This research is anticipated to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for reducing the rainfall threshold for landslide initiation in earthquake-susceptible regions.

  • In the past decade, different types of underreamed ground anchors have been developed for substructures requiring uplift resistance. This article introduces a new type of umbrella-shaped anchor. The uplift behavior of this ground anchor in clay is studied through a series of laboratory and field uplift tests. The test results show that the umbrella-shaped anchor has higher uplift capacity than conventional anchors. The failure mode of the umbrella-shaped anchor in a large embedment depth can be characterized by an arc failure surface and the dimension of the plastic zone depends on the anchor diameter. The anchor diameter and embedment depth have significant influence on the uplift behavior. A finite element model is established to simulate the pullout of the ground anchor. A parametric study using this model is conducted to study the effects of the elastic modulus, cohesion, and friction angle of soils on the load-displacement relationship of the ground anchor. It is found that the larger the elastic modulus and the shear strength parameters, the higher the uplift capacity of the ground anchor. It is suggested that in engineering design, the soil with stiffer modulus and higher shear strength should be selected as the bearing stratum of this type of anchor.

  • The maximum unit point resistance ($q_{max}$) of rock socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads was investigated by a numerical analysis. A 3D Finite Difference Method (FDM) analysis and a Distinct Element Method (DEM) analysis were performed with varying rock elastic modulus (E), discontinuity spacing ($S_j$), discontinuity dip angle ($i_j$), and pile diameter (D). Based on the results of obtained, it was found that the ultimate point resistance ($q_{max}$) increased as rock elastic modulus (E) and rock discontinuity spacing ($S_j$) increased. But, it was found that $q_{max}$ decreased as pile diameter (D) increased. As for the influence of the dip angle of rock discontinuity ($i_j$), it was shown that $q_{max}$ decreased up to 50% of maximum value within the range of $0^{\circ}$ < $i_j$ < $60^{\circ}$ due to the shear failure at rock discontinuities. Furthermore, it was found that if $20^{\circ}{\leq}i_j{\leq}40^{\circ}$, influence of $i_j$ should be taken into account because $q_{max}$ tended to approach a minimum value as $i_j$ approached a value near the friction angle of the discontinuity (${\phi}_j$).

  • This research, in order to study the effects of initial shear stress of anisotropically consolidated sand that has 0.558% fines, performed several undrained static and dynamic triaxial test. To simulate the real field conditions, loose and dense samples were prepared. Besides, the cyclic shear strength of Nakdong River sand under various combinations of initial static shear stress, stress path, pore water pressure and residual strength relationship was studied. By using Bolton's theory, peak internal friction angle at failure which has considerable effects on the relative density and mean effective stress was determined. In p'- q diagram, the phase transformation line moves closer to the failure line as the specimen's initial anistropical consolidation stress increases. Loose sands were more affected than dense sands. The increase of consolidation stress ratio from 1.4 to 1.8 had an effect on liquefaction resistance strength resulting from the increase of relativity density, and showed similar CSR values in dense specimen condition.

  • This paper presents experimental results on detailing of boundary element transverse reinforcement, proposed to alleviate placement detailing of special shear wall experiencing difficulty in construction at the sites due to recently reinforced seismic regulations, according to the type and placement interval of transverse reinforcement. As a result of experiment, crack and destruction aspects of SSWR series specimen that employed the proposed detailing of transverse reinforcement showed similar trend as SSW series specimen that used closed hoop. Predicted maximum strength values were exceeded. Also as a result of comparing energy dissipation ability, SSWR2 specimen that follows alleviated placement detailing was found to have similar seismic performance as special shear wall SSW2 specimen based on the existing design standard. As it satisfies the deformation angle condition of 1.5% provided in the design standard, SSWR2 can be used as the main lateral force resistance element in structures.

  • In this study, examined the cutting characteristics of alumuminum alloy AC8A-T6 that is used to present car piston materials. And in been holding materials machining empirically escape as result that experiment comparison changing the cutting speed and feed on various condition to choose efficient machining condition. The following results can be summarized from this research. 1. As the cutting speed decreased, principal cutting force and thrust cutting force is increased, and reason that cutting force interacts greatly in the low cutting speed is thought by result by BUE's stabilization. 2. The feed speed and cutting speed increase, friction factor is decrescent and the cause appeared the thrust cutting force is fallen than cutting force relatively because chip flow according to increase of the feed rate is constraint. 3. Though specific cutting resistance grows cutting area and the feed rate are few, the cause was expose that shear angle decreases by rake face of tool gets into negative angle remarkably as wear of a cutting tool or defect part of workpiece is cut. 4. Cutting speed do greatly depth of cut is slow, surface roughness examined closely through an experiment that becomes bad, and know that it can get good surface that process cutting speed because do feed rate by 0.1mm/rev low more than 250m/min to get good surface roughness can.

  • In this study, the calcium hydroxide, an inherent product of cement hydration, was treated using biomimetic carbonation method of incorporating stearic acid to generate the hydrophobic calcium carbonate on concrete surface. Carbonation reaction was carried out at various $CO_2$ pressure and temperatures and utilizing the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), chloride-ion penetration test apparatus, and compression test machine to investigate the hydrophobicity, durability, and mechanical properties of the synthesized products. Experimental results indicate that the calcium stearate may change the surface property of concrete from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity. Increasing reaction temperature can change the particles from irregular shapes to needle-rod structures with increased shear stress and thus favorable to hydrophobicity and microhardness. The contact angle against water for the concrete surface was found to increase with increasing $CO_2$ pressure and temperature, and reached to an optimum value at around $90^{\circ}C$. The maximum static water contact angle of 128.7 degree was obtained at the $CO_2$ pressure of 2 atm and temperature of $90^{\circ}C$. It was also found that biomimetic carbonation increased the permeability, acid resistance and chloride-ion permeability of the concrete material. These unique results demonstrate that the needle-rod structures of $CaCO_3$ synthetized on concrete surface could enhance hydrophobicity, durability, and mechanical properties of concrete.

  • Automotive today has been transforming to an electronic product by adopting a lot of convenience and safety features, suggesting that joining materials and their mechanical reliabilities are getting more important. In this study, a Sn-Cu-Cr-Ca solder composition having a high melting temperature ($>230^{\circ}C$) was fabricated and its joint properties and reliability was investigated with an aim to evaluate the suitability as a joining material for electronics of engine room. Furthermore, mechanical properties change under complex environment were compared with several existing solder compositions. As a result of contact angle measurement, favorable spreadability of 84% was shown and the average shear strength manufactured with corresponding composition solder paste was $1.9kg/mm^2$. Also, thermo-mechanical reliability by thermal shock and vibration test was compared with that of the representative high temperature solder materials such as Sn-3.5Ag, Sn-0.7Cu, and Sn-5.0Sb. In order to fabricate the test module, solder balls were made in joints with ENIG-finished BGA and then the BGA chip was reflowed on the OPS-finished PCB pattern. During the environmental tests, resistance change was continuously monitored and the joint strength was examined after tests. Sn-3.5Ag alloy exhibited the biggest degradation rate in resistance and shear stress and Sn-0.7Cu resulted in a relatively stable reliability against thermo-mechanical stress coming from thermal shock and vibration.
