  • Reinforced concrete (RC) columns can be strengthened by direct fastening of steel plates around a column, forming composite actions. This method can increase both the total load bearing area and the concrete confinement stress. To predict the axial load resistance of strengthened RC columns, the equivalent passive confinement stress of the stirrups and the steel jacket should be accurately quantified, which requires the stress in the stirrups and shear force in the connections to be first obtained. In this paper, parameters, i.e., the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors are utilized to quantify the stress of the stirrups and shear force in the connections. A mechanical model for determining the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors is proposed and validated using the experimental results in a previous study. The model is found to be robust. Subsequently, a parametric study is conducted and the optimum stress ratios of the stirrups and the optimum shear force ratios of connectors are proposed for engineering designs.

  • In this paper, transverse shear spacing and effective depth of wide beams were considered as parameters to evaluate the shear capacity of wide beam according to transverse spacing of steel plates with openings in experimental way. The eight specimens were composed of: five specimens of shear reinforced by steel plates with openings and three non-reinforced specimens. Crack, failure mode, strain and load-displacement curve of specimens were analysed. Shear contribution of shear reinforcement is evaluated and maximum transverse spacing of shear reinforcement was proposed. Shear strength of the specimen that reinforced with three stirrup legs was higher than shear strength of the specimen that reinforced with two stirrup legs. And as the effective depth increased, shear strength was increased.

  • This paper discusses generalized modeling schemes for both reinforced concrete (RC) and post-tensioned (PT) flat plate buildings. In this modeling approach, nonlinear behavior due to slab flexure, moment and shear transfer at slab-column connections, and punching shear was included along with linear secant stiffness of each member or connection that accounts for concrete cracking. This generalized model was capable of simulating all different scenarios of slab-column connection failures such as brittle punching, flexure-shear interactive failure, and flexural failure followed by drift-induced punching. Furthermore, automatic detection of drift-induced punching shear and subsequent backbone curve modifications were realistically modelled by incorporating the limit state model, in which gravity shear versus drift capacity relations were adopted. The validation of the model was conducted using one-third scale two-story by two-bay RC and PT flat plate frames. The comparisons revealed that the model was robust and effective.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate punching shear strength of exterior connections in the flat plate structure with rectangular column. To inspect the effect of column aspect ratios on the punching shear behavior, eight specimens for exterior connection were made and tested. In this experimental program the length of critical perimeter was kept constant, while column aspect ratio varied from 2.0 to 4.5. Two levels of concrete strength and slab reinforcement ratio were also considered. As the column aspect ratio increased, the punching shear strengths are decreased. The decrement of punching shear strength was small in specimens with high aspect ratio of column.

  • Steel plate shear wall (SPSW) system has been increasingly used for lateral loads resisting system since 1980s when the utilization of post-buckling strength of SPSW was realized. The structural response of SPSWs largely depends on the behavior of the surrounded beams. The beams are normally required to behave in the elastic region when the SPSW fully buckled and formed the tension field action. However, most modern design codes do not specify how this requirement can be achieved. This paper presents theoretical investigation and design procedures of manually calculating the plastic flexural capacity of the beams of SPSWs and can be considered as an extension to the previous work by Qu and Bruneau (2011). The reduction in the plastic flexural capacity of beam was considered to account for the presence of shear stress that was altered towards flanges at the boundary region, which can be explained by Saint-Venant's principle. The reduction in beam web was introduced and modified based on the research by Qu and Bruneau (2011), while the shear stress in the web in this research is excluded due to the boundary effect. The plastic flexural capacity of the beams is given by the superposition of the contributions from the flanges and the web. The developed equations are capable of predicting the plastic moment of the beams subjected to combined shear force, axial force, bending moment, and tension fields induced by yielded infill panels. Good agreement was found between the theoretical results and the data from previous research for flexural capacity of beams.

  • This work focuses on the behavior of the static analysis of functionally graded plates materials (FGMs) with porosities that may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication. For this purpose a new refined plate theory is used in this work, it contains only four unknowns, unlike five unknowns for other theories. This new model meets the nullity of the transverse shear stress at the upper and lower surfaces of the plate. The parabolic distribution of transverse shear stresses along the thickness of the plate is taken into account in this analysis; the material properties of the FGM plate vary a power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of the constituents. The rule of mixture is modified to describe and approximate material properties of the FG plates with porosity phases. The validity of this theory is studied by comparing some of the present results with other higher-order theories reported in the literature, the influence of material parameter, the volume fraction of porosity and the thickness ratio on the behavior mechanical P-FGM plate are represented by numerical examples.

  • This research investigated the vibration frequency of sandwich plate made of piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite core (PFRC) and face sheets of piezomagnetic materials. The effective electroelastic constants for PFRC materials are obtained by the micromechanical approach. The resting medium of sandwich plate is modeled by Pasternak foundation including normal and shear modulus. Besides, sandwich plate is subjected to linearly varying normal stresses that change by load factor. The coupled equations of motion are derived using first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and energy method. These equations are solved by differential quadrature method (DQM) for simply supported boundary condition. A detailed numerical study is carried out based on piezoelectricity theory to indicate the significant effect of load factor, volume fraction of fibers, modulus of elastic foundation, core-to-face sheet thickness ratio and composite materials on dimensionless frequency of sandwich plate. These findings can be used to aerospace, building and automotive industries.

  • A higher order plate bending finite element using cubic in-plane displacement profiles is proposed for geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin and thick plates. The higher order plate bending element has been derived from the three dimensional plate-like continuum by discretization of the equations of motion by Galerkin weighted residual method, together with enforcing higher order plate assumptions. Total Lagrangian formulation has been used for geometrically nonlinear analysis of plates and consistent linearization by Newton-Raphson method has been performed to solve the nonlinear equations. The element characteristics have been computed by, selective reduced integration technique using Gauss quadrature to avoid shear locking phenomenon in case of extremely thin plates. Several numerical examples were solved with FEAP macro program to demonstrate versatility and accuracy of the present higher order plate bending element.

  • In this paper, a spectral finite element method for a rectangular sandwich plate with viscoelastic core having the Levy-type boundary conditions has been plated. The sandwich plate consists of two isotropic and elastic face plates with a surfaced-bonded viscoelastic core. For the analysis, the in-plane and transverse energy in the face plates and only shear energy in the core are considered, respectively. To account for the frequency dependent complex shear modulus of the viscoelastic core, the Golla-Hughes-McTavish model is adopted. To evaluate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method, the frequency response function and dynamic responses of the sandwich plate with all edges simply supported subject to an impact load are calculated and compared with those calculated by a finite element method. Though these calculations, it is confirmed that the proposed method is very reliable and efficient one for vibration analysis of a rectangular sandwich plate with viscoelastic core having the Levy-type boundary conditions.

  • In this study, the buckling analysis of the vertically curved stiffened web plate was conducted through finite-element analysis, using an eight- and nine-node flat shell element with a substitute shear strain field. To investigate the buckling behavior of the vertically curved web plate with a longitudinal or vertical stiffener under in-plane moment loading, parametric studies were conducted for the variation of the width (b) and ratio of the bending stiffness of the stiffener to that of the plate (${\gamma}=EI/bD$). The static behavior of the vertically curved web plate without a stiffener was also investigated, and then the buckling abilities of the longitudinal and vertical stiffeners were compared under moment loading.
