The thin web panels of plate girders often need to be reinforced with transverse stiffeners to increase the shear strength. Since early 1960s, extensive researches have been conducted on the ultimate shear strength of plate girder webs with transverse stiffeners. These results have been first adopted into AASHTO(1970) and British Standard(1983) Specifications for the determination of the ultimate shear strength of transversely stiffened web panels. Although the main purposes of reinforcing web panels with longitudinal stiffeners are to increase the buckling strength and to control the lateral deflections due to bending, it has been reported that the longitudinal stiffeners increase the shear strength. However lack of studies has kept the effects of the longitudinal stiffeners on the ultimate shear strength from the design of plate girder web panels. In the present study an experimental investigation is carried out in order to assess the increment of the ultimate shear strength of shear web panels due to the longitudinal stiffeners and the results are compared with the existing failure theories.
A 4-node assumed strain finite element based on higher order shear deformation theory is developed to investigate the behaviours of symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plates. The present element is based on Reddy's higher order shear deformation theory so that it can consider the parabolic distribution of shear deformation through plate thickness direction. In particular, assumed strain method is adopted to alleviate the shear locking phenomena inherited plate elements based on higher order shear deformation theory. The present finite element has seven degrees of freedom per node and denoted as HSA4. Numerical examples are carried out for symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plate with various thickness values. Numerical results are compared with reference solutions produced by other higher order shear deformation theories.
Many experiments have been performed to investigate eccentric shear strength and unbalanced moment-carrying capacity of flat plate-column connections under combined gravity and lateral load. However, each existing experiment used different test setup, and the shear strength of the connection was different depending on the test setup. Current design methods which were based on the experimental results might not accurately explain the shear strength of the flat plate. In a companion study, based on results of nonlinear finite element analyses, an alternative design method for the plate-column connection was developed. However, in this method, eccentric shear strength of the connection which was required for assessing unbalanced moment-carrying capacity was evaluated by an empirical formula. In the present study, a theoratical approach using Rankine's failure criterion was attemped to investigate failure mechanism of the eccentric shear. Based on the results, an improved strength model of the eccentric shear was developed, and it was verified by comparison with the existing experimental results. By means of the strength model, the design method developed in the companion study was re-verified.
Concentrically braced frames (CBFs) possess high stiffness and strength against lateral loads; however, they suffer from low energy absorption capacity against seismic loads due to the susceptibility of CBF diagonal elements to bucking under compression loading. To address this problem, in this study, an innovative damper was proposed and investigated experimentally and numerically. The proposed damper comprises main plates and includes a flange plate angled at θ and a trapezius-shaped web plate surrounded by the plate at the top and bottom sections. To investigate the damper behaviour, dampers with θ = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° were evaluated with different flange plate thicknesses of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mm. Dampers with θ = 0° and 90° create rectangular-shaped and I-shaped shear links, respectively. The results indicate that the damper with θ = 30° exhibits better performance in terms of ultimate strength, stiffness, overstrength, and distribution stress over the damper as compared to dampers with other angles. The hysteresis curves of the dampers confirm that the proposed damper acts as a ductile fuse. Furthermore, the web and flange plates contribute to the shear resistance, with the flange carrying approximately 80% and 10% of the shear force for dampers with θ = 30° and 90°, respectively. Moreover, dampers that have a larger flange-plate shear strength than the shear strength of the web exhibit behaviours in linear and nonlinear zones. In addition, the over-strength obtained for the damper was greater than 1.5 (proposed by AISC for shear links). Relevant relationships are determined to predict and design the damper and the elements outside it.

A four-node plate finite element for the analysis of laminated composites which is developed using strain gradient notation is presented. The element is based on a first-order shear deformation theory and on the equivalent lamina assumption. Strains and stresses can be calculated at different points through the thickness of the plate. They are averaged values due to the equivalent lamina assumption. A shear correction factor is used as the transverse shear strain is taken to be constant over the plate thickness while its actual variation is parabolic. Strain gradient notation, which is physically interpretable, allows for the detailed a-priori analysis of the finite element model. The polynomial expansions are inspected and spurious terms responsible for modeling errors are identified in the shear strains polynomial expansions. The element is corrected by simply removing the spurious terms from the shear strains expansions. The element is implemented into a FORTRAN finite element code in two versions; namely, with and without spurious terms. Results are compared to show the effects of the spurious terms on the solutions. It is also shown that a refined mesh composed of corrected elements provides solutions which approximate very well the analytical solutions, validating the procedure.

The effect of sample handling condition on the rheological measurement of regenerated silk fibroin formic acid solution using parallel plate geometry was investigated. In case of loading method, the loading by pouring sample solution resulted in the best reproducibility of rheological measurement. Loading with spoon showed a high variance of viscosity value at low shear rate region ($0.01{\sim}1sec^{-1}$) while loading with syringe exhibited a low reproducibility of viscosity at high shear region ($1{\sim}100sec^{-1}$) with a disappearance of shear thinning phenomenon. It was revealed that the sample loading with small extra amount lead to the most reproducible result. The sample loading with the exact amount for the measuring plate resulted in a lack of reproducibility of high shear viscosity, while the loading with large extra volume produced a limited consistency of low shear viscosity. It was turned out that 3 min. of waiting time before measurement was the optimum condition for reliable result. When the waiting time was less than 1 min., the low shear viscosity was obtained with a lack of consistency. On the other hand, the sample solution started drying when the waiting time increased up to 5 min.
Purpose: This study investigates mechanical behavior of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) plate in flexure. Isogeometric analysis (IGA) method coupled with shear deformable theory of higher-order (HSDT) to analyze the nonlinear bending response is presented. Method: Shear deformable plate theory into which a polynomial shear shape function and the von Karman type geometric nonlinearity are incorporated is used to derive the nonlinear equations of equilibrium for FG-CNTRC plate in bending. The modified Newton-Raphson iteration is adopted to solve the system equations. Result: The dispersion pattern of carbon nanotubes, plate geometric parameter and boundary condition have significant effects on the nonlinear flexural behavior of FG-CNTRC plate. Conclusion: The proposed IGA method coupled with the HSDT can successfully predict the flexural behavior of FG-CNTRC plate.

Energy flow analysis(EFA) is a representative method that can predict the statistical energetics of structures at high frequencies. Generally, as the frequency increases, the shear distortion and rotatory inertia effects in the out-of-plane motion of beams or plates become important. Therefore, to predict the out-of-plane energetics of coupled structures in the high frequency range, the energy flow analyses of Timoshenko beam and Mindlin plate are required. Unlike the energy flow model of Kirchhoff plate, the energy flow model of Mindlin plate is composed of three kinds of energy governing equations(out-of-plane shear wave, bending dominant flexural wave, and shear dominant flexural wave). This paper performed the energy flow finite element analysis(EFFEA) of coplanar coupled Mindlin plates. For EFFEA of coplanar coupled Mindlin plates, the energy flow finite element formulation of out-of-plane energetics in the Mindlin plate was performed. The general EFFEA program was implemented by MATLAB® language. For the verification of EFFEA of Mindlin plate, the various numerical applications were done successfully.
Parametric resonance of shear deformable composite skew plates subjected to non-uniform (parabolic) and linearly varying periodic edge loading is studied for different boundary conditions. The skew plate structural model is based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT), which accurately predicts the numerical results for thick skew plate. The total energy functional is derived for the skew plates from total potential energy and kinetic energy of the plate. The strain energy which is the part of total potential energy contains membrane energy, bending energy, additional bending energy due to additional change in curvature and shear energy due to shear deformation, respectively. The total energy functional is solved using Rayleigh-Ritz method in conjunction with boundary characteristics orthonormal polynomials (BCOPs) functions. The orthonormal polynomials are generated for unit square domain using Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process. Bolotin method is followed to obtain the boundaries of parametric resonance region with higher order approximation. These boundaries are traced by the periodic solution of Mathieu-Hill equations with period T and 2T. Effect of various parameters like skew angle, span-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, static load factor on parametric resonance of skew plate have been investigated. The investigation also includes influence of different types of linearly varying loading and parabolically varying bi-axial loading.
A 4-node element for efficient finite element analysis of plate bending is presented in this paper. This element is formulated based on Mindlin plate theory to take account of shear deformation. To overcome the overestimation of shear stiffness in thin Mindlin plate element, especially in the lower order element, five nonconforming displacement modes are added to the original displacement fields. The proposed nonconforming element does not possess spurious zero-energy mode and does not show shear locking phenomena in very thin plate even for distorted mesh shapes. It was recognized from benchmark numerical tests that the displacement converges to the analytical solutions rapidly and the stress distributions are very smooth. The element also provides good results for the case of high aspect ratio.
