  • In this study, the seismic control performance of energy dissipation devices installed in a shear all-frame structure is investigated through nonlinear time history analysis of a 12-story building. Inelastic shear walls are modeled using the multiple vertical line element model (MVLEM) and inelastic columns and girders were modeled using fiber beam elements. For a seismic load increased by 38% compared to the design load, the seismic control performance was analyzed based on the results of a nonlinear time history analysis in terms of the inter-story drift, the story shear and the flexural strain. Friction type dampers was found to performs best if they are installed in the form of a brace adjacent to the shear wall with the friction force of 15 % of the maximum story shear force induced in the original building structure without dampers.

  • To study the seismic resistance of the shear capacity of the RC beam-column joints of two-story and four-story RC buildings, sample buildings are designed with ordinary moment resisting frame. For the shear capacity of joints, the equations of FEMA 356 and NZ seismic assessment are selected and compared. For comparison, one group of buildings is designed only for gravity loads and the other group is designed for seismic and gravity loads. For 16 cases of the designed buildings, seismic performance point is evaluated through push-over analysis and the capacity of joint shear strength is checked. Not only for the gravity designed buildings but also for seismic designed buildings, the demand of joint shear is exceeding the capacity at exterior joints. However, for interior joint, the demand of joint shear exceeds the capacity only for one case. At exterior joints, the axial load stress ratio is lower than 0.21 for gravity designed buildings and 0.13 for seismic designed buildings.

  • The current seismic design code prescribes that a structural wall should be designed as a special shear wall when the building height is more than 60 m and its seismic design category is classified as D. However, the use of a special shear wall has a negative effect on constructability and economic efficiency. In the present study, the seismic performance of a special shear wall and a special shear wall with relaxed reinforcement detail was evaluated through a cyclic reversal loading test. The specimens were constructed to measure the results of the experimental variable regarding the reinforcement details of the special boundary element. Next, the seismic performances of a special shear wall structural system and that of a special shear wall structural system with relaxed reinforcement detail was evaluated by methods proposed in the FEMA P695. The cyclic reversal loading test results of this study showed that the performance of the shear wall with relaxed reinforcement detail was almost similar to the performance of a special shear wall and has the performance which requested from standard. The results of the seismic evaluation showed that all special shear walls with relaxed reinforcement detail are satisfied with the design code and seismic performance.

  • Some results of experimental investigation conducted to assess the effect of cement composite strength and ductility on the shear behavior and crack-damage mitigation of stud connections between existing reinforced concrete frame in school buildings and seismic strengthening elements from cyclically direct shear tests are described. The cement composite strengths include 50 for medium strength and 70 MPa for high strength. Two types of cement composites, strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC) and non-shrinkage mortar, are used for stud shear connection specimens. The special SHCCs are reinforced with hybrid 0.2% polyethylene (PE) and 1.3% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers at the volume fraction and exhibits tensile strain capacity ranging from 0.2 to 0.5%. Test result indicates that SHCC improves the seismic performance and crack-damage mitigation of stud shear connections compared with stud connections with non-shrinkage mortar. However, the performance enhancement in SHCC stud connections with transverse and longitudinal reinforcements is less notable for those without additional reinforcement.

  • Reinforced Concrete (RC) shear walls are one of the civil structures in nuclear power plants to resist lateral loads such as earthquakes and wind loads effectively. Risk-informed and performance-based regulation in the nuclear industry requires considering possible accidents and determining desirable performance on structures. As a result, rather than predicting only the ultimate capacity of structures, the prediction of performances on structures depending on different damage states or various accident scenarios have increasingly needed. This study aims to develop machine-learning models predicting drifts of the RC shear walls according to the damage limit states. The damage limit states are divided into four categories: the onset of cracking, yielding of rebars, crushing of concrete, and structural failure. The data on the drift of shear walls at each damage state are collected from the existing studies, and four regression machine-learning models are used to train the datasets. In addition, the bagging ensemble method is applied to improve the accuracy of the individual machine-learning models. The developed models are to predict the drifts of shear walls consisting of various cross-sections based on designated damage limit states in advance and help to determine the repairing methods according to damage levels to shear walls.

  • This paper summarizes the seismic performance of two shear walls with different reinforcement details in boundary elements. One is a special shear wall designed by KBC2009 and the other is a shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements, which is a newly proposed type of special shear wall. Experimental tests under cyclic reversed loading were carried out with two 2/3 scale shear walls which were modelled from the lower part of seismic-resisting shear wall in 22-stories wall-slab apartment building. The experimental results show that seismic performance of shear wall with improved reinforcement details was almost similar to that of special shear wall with respect to the moment-drift ratio. However, energy dissipation capacity and ductility were slightly different. Also, shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements satisfied the inter-story drift limit of 1.5% from KBC2009.

  • In steel frame-tube structures (SFTSs) the application of flexural beam is not suitable for the beam with span-to-depth ratio lower than five because the plastic hinges at beam-ends can not be developed properly. This can lead to lower ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the SFTS. To address this problem, a replaceable shear link, acting as a ductile fuse at the mid length of deep beams, is proposed. SFTS with replaceable shear links (SFTS-RSLs) dissipate seismic energy through shear deformation of the link. In order to evaluate this proposal, buildings were designed to compare the seismic performance of SFTS-RSLs and SFTSs. Several sub-structures were selected from the design buildings and finite element models (FEMs) were established to study their hysteretic behavior. Static pushover and dynamic analyses were undertaken in comparing seismic performance of the FEMs for each building. The results indicated that the SFTS-RSL and SFTS had similar initial lateral stiffness. Compared with SFTS, SFTS-RSL had lower yield strength and maximum strength, but higher ductility and energy dissipation capacity. During earthquakes, SFTS-RSL had lower interstory drift, maximum base shear force and story shear force compared with the SFTS. Placing a shear link at the beam mid-span did not increase shear lag effects for the structure. The SFTS-RSL concentrates plasticity on the shear link. Other structural components remain elastic during seismic loading. It is expected that the SFTS-RSL will be a reliable dual resistant system. It offers the benefit of being able to repair the structure by replacing damaged shear links after earthquakes.

  • In order to predict low-level wind shear at Incheon International Airport (RKSI), a Low-Level Wind Shear prediction system (KMAP-LLWS) along the runway take-off and landing route at RKSI was established using Korea Meteorological Administration Post-Processing (KMAP). For the performance evaluation, the case of low-level wind shear cases calculated from Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) from July 2021 to June 2022 was used. As a result of verification using the performance evaluation index, POD, FAR, CSI, and TSS were 0.5, 0.85, 0.13, and 0.34, respectively, and the prediction performance was improved by POD, CSI, and TSS compared to the Low-Level Wind Shear prediction system (LDPS-LLWS) calculated using the Korea Meteorological Administration's Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS). This means that the use of high-resolution numerical models improves the predictability of wind changes. In addition, to improve the high FAR of KMAP-LLWS, the threshold for low-level wind shear strength was adjusted. As a result, the most effective low-level wind shear threshold at 8.5 knot/100 ft was derived. This study suggests that it is possible to predict and respond to low-level wind shear at RKSI. In addition, it will be possible to predict low-level wind shear at other airports without wind shear observation equipment by applying the KMAP-LLWS.

  • This study evaluates the detection and utilization of wind shear using data from the Low-Level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS) and the Aerodrome Meteorological Observation System (AMOS) for the year 2023 at Incheon International Airport. A comparison of wind shear occurrence days revealed that LLWAS recorded 57 days, the reproduced LLWAS recorded 84 days, and AMOS recorded 163 days, with AMOS and the reproduced LLWAS showing higher occurrences. Performance metrics, including Probability of Detection (POD), False Alarm Ratio (FAR), Critical Success Index (CSI), and True Skill Statistic (TSS), were analyzed to evaluate detection capabilities. For the reproduced LLWAS, most wind shear events were detected, but the FAR was high, indicating lower performance. AMOS detected about 50% of actual wind shear events, with a lower FAR than the reproduced LLWAS but still relatively high. To improve detection performance, optimal thresholds for wind shear warnings were analyzed and adjusted, resulting in an increase in the CSI from 0.53 to 0.68 for the reproduced LLWAS and from 0.25 to 0.28 for AMOS. By adjusting the wind shear warning thresholds, the balance between POD and FAR was improved, confirming the potential for ground-based equipment to issue wind shear warnings effectively.

  • In the NRC (New paradigm Reinforced Concrete) beam, steel forms, main angles used as main reinforcements, and shear angles used as basic shear reinforcements are welded and assembled in the form of vierendeel truss structures in a steel factory. After the NRC truss frame is installed at the site, additional main reinforcement and shear reinforcement are distributed. In this study, the shear performance evaluation of the NRC beam was conducted through shear tests in accordance with the type of shear reinforcement of the NRC beam (shear angle, inclined shear reinforcing bar, and U-type cover bar). As a result of the test, the initial stiffness was similar before the initial cracking of each specimen, and all specimens were shear fractured. The shear reinforcements of the specimens exhibited a yielding behavior at the time of the maximum sheat force, and the shear strengths of the specimens increased as the amount of reinforcement of the shear reinforcement increased. These results show that NRC shear reinforcements exhibit shear performance corresponding to their shear strength contribution. As a result of calculating the nominal shear strengths according to KDS 14 20 22, the experimental shear strengths of the NRC beam specimens with shear reinforcement was 37~146% larger than the nominal shear strengths, so It was evaluated as a safety side.
