The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior of precast segmental prestressed concrete bridge columns. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. An unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, is used. A joint element is newly developed to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior of precast segmental prestressed concrete bridge columns is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

This paper is concerned with the simplified criterion given in ASCE 4-98, for determining whether soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis is required for seismic response analysis of nuclear power plant structures. In this study, the criterion is evaluated for a couple of example structures including an existing nuclear power plant and the Hualien large-scale seismic test building. Forced vibration analysis and seismic response analysis are carried out using the simple stick model with soil springs and an elaborated SSI analytical model. From the numerical analyses, it is found that the criterion may not allow the fixed-base analysis for bedrock with shear wave velocity of greater than 1,100m/s which is a well-known criterion for a rock site. In addition, it is indicated that peak amplification as well as the peak broadening specified in NRC RG 1.122. shall be considered to include the effects of SSI.
The design of composite space trusses is a demanding task that involves taking several decisions on the truss depth, number of panels, member configuration, number of chord layers and concrete slab thickness and grade. The focus in this paper is on the design of top concrete slabs of composite space trusses, and in particular their thickness. Several effects must be considered in the process of designing the slab before an optimum thickness can be chosen. These effects include the inplane forces arising from shear interaction with the steel sub-truss and the flexural. and sheer effects of direct lateral slab loading. They also include a constructional consideration that the thickness must allow for sufficient cover and adequate space for placing the reinforcement. The work presented in this paper shows that the structural requirements on the concrete slab thickness are in many cases insignificant compared with the constructional requirements.
A novel higher order shear-deformable beam model, which provides linear variation of transversal normal strain and quadratic variation of shearing strain, is proposed to describe the beam resting on foundation. Then, the traditional two-parameter Pasternak foundation model is modified to capture the effects of the axial deformation of beam. The Masing's friction law is incorporated to deal with nonlinear interaction between the foundation and the beam bottom, and the nonlinear properties of the beam material are also considered. To solve the mathematical problem, a displacement-based finite element is formulated, and the reliability of the proposed model is verified. Finally, numerical examples are presented to study the effects of the interfacial friction between the beam and foundation, and the mechanical behavior due to the tensionless characteristics of the foundation is also examined. Numerical results indicate that the effects of tensionless characteristics of foundation and the interfacial friction have significant influences on the mechanical behavior of the beam-foundation system.
Nonlocal elasticity and Reddy plant theory are used to study the vibration response of functionally graded (FG) nanoplates resting on two parameters elastic medium called Pasternak foundation. Nonlocal higher order theory accounts for the effects of both scale and the effect of transverse shear deformation, which becomes significant where stocky and short nanoplates are concerned. It is assumed that the properties of FG nanoplate follow a power law through the thickness. In addition, Poisson's ratio is assumed to be constant in this model. Both Winkler-type and Pasternak-type foundation models are employed to simulate the interaction of nanoplate with surrounding elastic medium. Using Hamilton's principle, size-dependent governing differential equations of motion and corresponding boundary conditions are derived. A differential quadrature approach is being utilized to discretize the model and obtain numerical solutions for various boundary conditions. The model is validated by comparing the results with other published results.

A new mechanical model for predicting the vibration of a pipe pile embedded in longitudinally layered visco-elastic media with radial inhomogeneity is proposed by extending Novak's plain-strain model and complex stiffness method to consider viscous-type damping. The analytical solutions for the dynamic impedance, the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head are also derived and subsequently verified by comparison with existing solutions. An extensive parametric analysis is further performed to examine the effects of shear modulus, viscous damping coefficient, coefficient of disturbance degree, weakening or strengthening range of surrounding soil and longitudinal soft or hard interbedded layer on the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head. It is demonstrated that the proposed model and the obtained solutions provide extensive possibilities for practical application compared with previous related studies.
In a recent $paper^1$ we reported equilibrium (EMD) and non-equilibrium (NEMD) molecular dynamics simulations of liquid argon using the Green-Kubo relations and NEMD algorithms to calculate the thermal transport coefficients-the self-diffusion coefficient, shear viscosity, and thermal conductivity. The overall agreement with experimental data is quite good. In this paper the same technique is applied to calculate the thermal transport coefficients of liquid water at 298.15 K and 1 atm using TIP4P model for the interaction between water molecules. The EMD results show difficulty to apply the Green-Kubo relations since the time-correlation functions of liquid water are oscillating and not decaying rapidly enough except the velocity auto-correlation function. The NEMD results are found to be within approximately ${\pm}$30-40% error bars, which makes it possible to apply the NEMD technique to other molecular liquids.
With the aim to provide better predication about fracture behavior, a numerical simulating strategy based on the rigid spring model is proposed for reinforced concrete (RC) structures in this study. According to the proposed strategy, concrete is partitioned into a series of irregular rigid blocks based on the Voronoi diagram, which are connected by interface springs. Steel bars are simulated by bar elements, and the bond slip element is defined at bar element nodes to describe the interaction between reinforcement and concrete. A concrete damage evolution model based on the separation criterion is adopted to describe the weakening process of interface spring between adjacent blocks, while a nonlinear bond slip model is introduced to simulate the synergy behaviour of reinforced steel bars and concrete. In the damage evolution model of concrete, the influence of compressive stress perpendicular to the interface on the shear strength is considered. To check the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed modelling, experimental and numerical studies about a simply-supported RC beam and the two-notched concrete plates in Nooru-Mohamed's experiment are conducted, and the grid sensitivity are investigated.
This paper predicts the combined resonance behavior of the truncated conical shells (TCSs) under transverse and parametric coupled excitation. The motion governing equation is formulated in the framework of high-order shear deformation theory, von Kármán theory and Hamilton principle. The displacements and boundary conditions are characterized by a set of displacement shape functions with double Fourier series. Subsequently, the method of varying amplitude (MVA) is utilized to derive the approximate analytical solution of system response of TCSs. A comparative analysis is conducted to verify the accuracy of the current computational method. Additionally, the interaction mechanism of combined resonance, parametric resonance and primary resonance is examined. And the effect of damping coefficient, the external excitation, initial phase, axial motion speed, temperature variation, humidity variation, material properties and semi-vortex angle on the vibration mechanism are analyzed.
Bearing capacity of pile is governed by only skin friction in frozen ground condition, while it is generally governed both by skin friction and end bearing capacity in typically unfrozen ground condition. Skin friction force, which arises from the interaction between pile and frozen soils, is defined as adfreeze bond strength, and adfreeze bond strength is one of the most important key parameters for design of pile in frozen soils. Many studies have been carried out in order to analyze adfreeze bond strength characteristics over the last fifty years. However, many studies for adfreeze bond strength have been conducted with limited circumstances, since adfreeze bond strength is sensitively affected by various influence factors such as intrinsic material properties, pile surface roughness, and externally imposed testing conditions. In this study, direct shear test is carried out inside of large-scaled freezing chamber in order to analyze the adfreeze bond strength characteristics with varying freezing temperature and normal stress. Also, the relationship between adfreeze bond strength and shear strength of the frozen soil obtained from previous study was analyzed. The coefficient of adfreeze bond strength was evaluated in order to predict adfreeze bond strength based on shear strength, and coefficients suggested from this and previous studies were compared.
