The characteristics and prediction model of the shear strength for unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the initial water content on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests were carried out varying the initial water content, and the applicability of existing prediction models for the unsaturated shear strength was testified. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the initial water content. A sample compacted in the lower initial water content needs a higher suction to get the same degree of saturation while the shear strength of a sample with the lower initial water content displays a lower value. In order to apply the existing prediction models of the unsaturated shear strength to granite residual soils, a correction coefficient, α, on the internal friction angle, ø'was added.
This paper reviewed characteristics of fatigue crack behavior observed by changing various shapes of initial crack and magnitudes of loading in compact tension shear(CTS) specimen subjected to shear loading. In the high-loading condition, fatigue crack under shear loading propagated branching from the pre-crack tip. Meanwhile, the secondary fatigue crack in the low-loading condition which was created in the notch root due to friction on the pre-crack face grew to a main crack. Influenced by the mode II loading condition, fatigue crack propagation retardation appeared in the initial propagation region due to the reduction of crack driving force and friction on crack face. In both cases, however, fatigue cracks grew in tensile mode type. Propagation path of fatigue crack under the shear loading was 70 degree angle from the initial crack regardless of its shape and load magnitude.
Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the characteristics of flow past a sphere in uniform shear. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=300, 425 and 480 based on the inlet center velocity and sphere diameter. The non-dimensional shear rate K of the inlet uniform shear is varied from 0 to 0.15. At Re=300, the head of the hairpin vortex loop always locates on the high-velocity side in uniform shear, and the flow maintains the planar symmetry. At Re=425 and 480, the irregularity in the location and strength of the hairpin vortex appearing in uniform inlet flow is much reduced in uniform shear, but the flows still keep the asymmetry for most inlet shear rates. However, in the cases of K=0.075 and 0.1 at Re=425, the flows become planar symmetric and their characteristics of the evolution of the hairpin vortex loops are different from those of asymmetric flows. A hysteresis phenomenon switching from the planar symmetry to the asymmetry (or vice versa) depending on the initial condition is also observed at Re=425.
In this paper, shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated soil were compared using triaxial compression tests(CD) and modified direct shear tests and thus feasibility of the newly modified direct shear testing apparatus was confirmed. The shear strength tests of unsaturated state with a soil sample, obtained from a slope where debris flow occurred at Yangpyeong in Kyeunggi province during 2010, were performed. Both tests showed a linear relationship of matric suction with the shear strength under low level of matric suction. The apparent cohesion of the unsaturated soil was also increased linearly with increase of matric suction. As results of comparing two different testing apparatus, estimated values of shear strength parameters of unsaturated soil($c^{\prime}$, ${\phi}^b$) were slightly larger in the modified direct shear tests due to constraint effect of shear box.
Stability and mechanical deformation behavior of rock masses are highly dependent on the mechanical characteristics of contained discontinuities. Therefore, mechanical characteristics of the discontinuities should be considered in the design of tunnel and underground structures. In this study, direct shear tests for rough granite joints were carried out under constant normal stiffness conditions. Effects of initial normal stress, shear velocity, and surface roughness on the characteristics of shear strength and deformation behaviors were examined. Results of shear testing under constant normal stiffness conditions reveal that shear behaviors could be classified into two categories, based on the amount of decrease in shear stress at the Int peak shear stress. With initial normal stiffness increasing, it turned out that shear displacement at peak stress and the first peak shear stress increased, however friction angle and friction coefficient showed decrease. In case of shear stiffness and average friction coefficient, it turned out that they are not dependent on the initial normal stress. Minor effects of shear velocity on rough joints were observed in several shear quantities. However, the effects of shear velocity were insignificant regardless of the normal stress increase. Change of shear strength and deformation characteristics on joint roughness were examined, however, it turned out that the variations were attributed to deviation of shear test specimens.
Residual stress is defined as a minimum stress with a large displacement of specimens and the residual stress after peak shear stress appears with displacement volume but there is no provision to select the residual stress. In the previous study, residual stress was recorded when the change of shear load is small in the condition of the strain more than 15%. But, in this study, hyperbolic function((No Abstract.see full/text), b=experimental constant) of soil test is adapted to joint of rock and the propriety is investigated. In a landslide and landsliding of artificial slope, wedge failure of tunnel with a large displacement, tests are simulated from peak stress to residual stress for safety analysis. But now. direct shear stress and triaxial compressive tests are usually performed to find out characteristics of shear stress about joint. Although these tests get a small displacement, that data of peak stress and residual stress are used for safety analysis. In this study, we tried to determine failure criteria for joints of rock using ring shear test machine. The residual stress following shear behavior was determined by the result of ring shear test and direct shear test. In conclusion, after comparing the results of the two test, we found that cohesion(c) and internal friction angle(ø) of ring shear test are 30% and 22% respectively of those of the direct shear test.

Most commercial buildings among existing RC buildings in Korea have a multi-story wall-frame structure where RC shear wall is commonly used as its core at stairways or elevators. The members of the existing middle and low-rise wall-frame buildings are likely arranged in ordinary details considering building occupancy, and the importance and difficulty of member design. This is because there are few limitations, considerations, and financial burdens on the code for designing members with ordinary details. Compared with the intermediate or unique details, the ductility and overstrength are insufficient. Furthermore, the behavior of the member can be shear-dominated. Since shear failure in vertical members can cause a collapse of the entire structure, nonlinear characteristics such as shear strength and stiffness deterioration should be adequately reflected in the analysis model. With this background, an 8-story RC wall-frame building was designed as a building frame system with ordinary shear walls, and the effect of reflecting the shear failure mode of columns and walls on the collapse mechanism was investigated. As a result, the shear failure mode effect on the collapse mechanism was evident in walls, not columns. Consequently, it is recommended that the shear behavior characteristics of walls are explicitly considered in the analysis of wall-frame buildings with ordinary details.
This reasearch was performed to provide the fundamental intonation for the mechanization of Korean pine cone harvest when the shoot shearing method is adopted. Shear force and stress of pine cone shoots were measured and analyzed for this purpose. Samples are selected along their harvesting time and tested in 17 levels of shoot diameter from 10 to 26mm with 1mm increment. 1) Shear force-deformation characteristics showed that shoot reached its rupture point after 2 to 4 of bio-yield points. It was supposed that these multiple bio-yield points were caused by the discrete compression of wood parts which are composed of water, nutrient, resin, etc. 2) Required shear force to shear shoot was proportional to the square of shoot diamter, however, shear force for shoots of early harvesting time(Aug. 31) was proportional to the shoot diameter. Variance of shear force was increased as the harvesting time was delayed. Shear forces were distributed from 468N(Aug. 31, 12mm dia) to 4153N(Aug. 31, 26mm dia) disregarding the sampling date. 3) The average shear stresses by sampling dates were 744,822, and 883N/m2, respectively, and for the earlier shoot samples shear stress was quite smaller than the others. Shear stress was proportional to shoot diameter squared, and the effect of shoot diameter on the shear stress was decreased as harvesting time was delayed.
It is necessary to better understand the effect of age-related degradation on the performance of reinforced concrete shear walls in nuclear power plants in order to ensure their structural safety in the event of earthquakes. Therefore, this paper studies seismic fragility of the typical shear wall in nuclear power plants under earthquake excitation Reinforced concrete shear wall is composed of wall, horizontal and vertical flanges. Due to characteristics of its geometry, it is difficult to predict the ultimate behavior of shear wall under earthquake excitation. In this study, for more realistic numerical simulation, the Latin Hyper-Cube (LHC) simulation technique was used to generate uncertain variables for the material properties of concrete shear walls. The effects of crack, characteristics of inelastic behavior of concrete, and loss of cross section were considered in the nonlinear finite element analysis. The effects of aging-related deterioration were investigated on the performance of reinforced concrete shear walls through analysis of undegraded concrete shear walls and degraded concrete shear walls. The resulting seismic fragility curves present the change of performance of concrete shear wall due to age-related degradation.

In end milling process, which is characterized by the use of a rotating tool, the undeformed chip thickness varies periodically with phase change of the tool. Although many efforts have concentrated on the study of end milling process, the analysis of shear and chip-tool friction behaviors has not been reported. Recently, a model has been proposed to simulate the shear and friction characteristics of an up-end milling process in terms of the equivalent oblique cutting. In the current study, the varying undeformed chip thickness and the cutting forces in a down-end milling process are replaced with the equivalent ones of oblique cutting. Then it is possible to simulate the shear and the chip-tool friction characteristics of a down-end milling process. The proposed model has been verified through two sets of cutting tests i.e., down-end milling and the equivalent oblique cutting tests. The experimental results show that the proposed model is suitable to analyze the shear and chip-tool frictional characteristics of down-end milling process. The specific cutting energy decreases with increase in equivalent undeformed chip thickness in a down-end milling process.
