  • Characteristic relaxation time and characteristic diffusion time of viscoelastic fluids are determined experimentally by measuring the zero-shear-rate viscosity by falling ball viscometer and the infinite-shear-rate viscosity by capillary tube viscometer. Fluids used in experiments are aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide Separan AP-273 and the polymer concentrations range from 300 to 2000 wppm. A newly designed laser beam and timer system is employed to overcome the difficulty in measuring terminal velocities of the low concentration solutions. Ball removal device is prepared to remove the dropped ball from the bottom of cylinder without disturbing the testing fluid. In order to measure the zero-shear-rate viscosity, densities of hollow aluminium balls are adjusted very close to the densities of testing fluids. Characteristic diffusion time, which is ball viscometer. However, terminal velocity of a needle by falling ball viscometer is not affected by the time interval of dropping needles and characteristic diffusion time is not measured with a dropping needle. Powell-Eyring model predicts the highest values of the characteristic relaxation times among models used for heat transfer experimental works for a given polymer solution. As degradation of a polymer solution continues, the zero-shear-rate viscosity decreases more seriously than the infinite-shear-rate viscosity. Characteristic relaxation times of polymer solutions decreases as degradation continues.

  • As electrorheological fluid(ER fluid) has a characteristic that apparent viscosity varies when electric field applied, so rheological characteristic(yield stress & viscosity) changes in proportion to the electric field applied and the response time is very short within a few miliseconds . In case of using ER fluid for journal bearing as lubricant, it is estimated that it's possible to realize very effective journal bearing system that is not complicate and has a very quick response time. It is necessary to examine the influence of rheological characteristic that varies with electric field applied on bearing characteristic to apply ER fluid to journal bearing, however there are few studies for about that. As for the journal bearing, it comes under high shear flow mode that has shear rate range of $10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ because rotational speed is very high and clearance is small. But most of the studies for about ER fluid issued until now is about the range of $10\~10^2s^{-1}$. So, there are a lot of difficulties to understand the characteristic offish shear flow mode and furthermore it is restricted to make an experiment for about the characteristic of ER fluid because of the limitation of experimental equipment. The equipment was prepared to make an experiment lot high shear flow mode that has the range of $10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ using ER fluid that is composed of silicon oil with dispersed particle of starch. Using the above system, the fluid characteristic of ER fluid was studied.

  • The characteristics and prediction model for the shear strength of unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the net normal stress on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests and SWCC tests were carried out varying the net normal stress, and the experimental data for unsaturated shear strength tests were compared with predicted shear strength envelopes using existing prediction models. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the net normal stress. Therefore, to achieve a truly descriptive shear strength envelope for unsaturated soils, tile effect of the normal stress on the contribution of matric suction to the shear strength has to be taken into consideration. In this paper, a modified prediction model for the unsaturated shear strength was proposed.

  • In order to investigate systematically the steady shear flow properties of aqueous po1y(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions having various molecular weights and concentrations, the steady flow viscosity has been measured with a Rheometrics Fluids Spectrometer (RFS II) over a wide range of shear rates. The effects of shear rate, concentration, and molecular weight on the steady shear flow properties were reported in detail from the experimentally measured data, and then the results were interpreted using the concept of a material characteristic time. In addition, some flow models describing the non-Newtonian behavior (shear-thinning characteristics) of polymeric liquids were employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady flow behavior, and the applicability of these models was examined by calculating the various material parameters. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) At low shear rates, aqueous PEO solutions show a Newtonian viscous behavior which is independent of shear rate. At shear rate region higher than a critical shear rate, however, they exhibit a shear-thinning behavior, demonstrating a decrease in steady flow viscosity with increasing shear rate. (2) As an increase in concentration and/or molecular weight, the zero-shear viscosity is increased while the Newtonian viscous region becomes narrower. Moreover, the critical shear rate at which the transition from the Newtonian to shear-thinning behavior occurs is decreased, and the shear-thinning nature becomes more remarkable. (3) Aqueous PEO solutions show a Newtonian viscous behavior at shear rate range lower than the inverse value of a characteristic time $1/{\lambda}_E$, while they exhibit a shear-thinning behavior at shear rate range higher than $1/{\lambda}_E$. For aqueous PEO solutions having a broad molecular weight distribution, the inverse value of a characteristic time is not quantitatively equivalent to the critical shear rate, but the power-law relationship holds between the two quantities. (4) The Cross, Carreau, and Carreau-Yasuda models are all applicable to describe the steady flow behavior of aqueous PEO solutions. Among these models, the Carreau-Yasuda model has the best validity.

  • The characteristics and prediction model of the shear strength for unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the initial water content on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests were carried out varying the initial water content, and the applicability of existing prediction models for the unsaturated shear strength was testified. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the initial water content. A sample compacted in the lower initial water content needs a higher suction to get the same degree of saturation while the shear strength of a sample with the lower initial water content displays a lower value. In order to apply the existing prediction models of the unsaturated shear strength to granite residual soils, a correction coefficient, α, on the internal friction angle, ø'was added.

  • The characteristic tests of reduced-scale high damping and lead rubber bearings are performed by changing the shear displacements and the vertical loads. The test frequency is 0.5Hz. Test results show that the shear stiffnesses obtained for both bearings are less than target values, but the damping values are greater than the targets. The shear stiffness and damping of lead are larger than those of high damping bearings. The shear-deformation characteristic values such as stiffness, damping and yield load values are changed according to the level of design vertical loads.

  • The transient shear stress response of an electrorheological fluid is investigated experimentally. The characteristic time constants of an electrorheological fluid sheared between two concentric cylinders were obtained under various electric field strengths and shear rates. Also, two experimental modes are adopted to investigate the effect of the shear flow on the dynamic behavior of the fluid; one is that the electric field is induced before shearing, and the other is the electric field is induced after shearing. From the difference in the response time between two modes, the cluster formation time were obtained. The response times were decreased with the increase of the shear rate, irrelatively of the electric field strength. The cluster formation time were monotonically increased with increase of shear rate, and thereafter, were converged with a certain value.

  • The shear wave velocity is directly related to the deformation characteristic of soils which is an engineering property represented by the shear modulus. This feature presents an opportunity of advantageous utilization of the shear wave velocity for deformation analysis in geotechnical engineering applications, since the deformation modulus is determined on strong theoretical basis, whereas penetration resistances such as N by SPT or qc by CPT rely on empirical relations. Furthermore, it is an engineering property that can be evaluated by performing the same basic measurement in the laboratory and field, and various problems in geotechnical engineering can be dealt with economically and reliably when the field and laboratory methods are combined effectively. In this article, assessment of nonlinear deformation characteristic of soils based on synergic use of the field and laboratory test results is described, and representative case histories of geotechnical applications of the shear wave velocity are illustrated.
