In this research, mechanical buckling of hybrid functionally graded plates is considered using a new four variable refined plate theory. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. The plate properties are assumed to be varied through the thickness following a simple power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of material constituents. Governing equations are derived from the principle of minimum total potential energy. The closed-form solution of a simply supported rectangular plate subjected to in-plane loading has been obtained by using the Navier method. The effectiveness of the theories is brought out through illustrative examples.

The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical fence was investigated using the two-frame PTV system. The Reynolds number based on the fence height(H) was 2950. From this study, it is revealed that at least 400 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics, but only 100 field data are sufficient for the time-averaged mean velocity information. Various turbulence statistics such as turbulent intensities, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were calculated from 700 instantaneous velocity vector fields. The fence flow has an unsteady recirculation region behind the fence, followed by a slow relaxation to the flat-plate boundary layer flow. The time-averaged reattachment length estimated from the streamline distribution is about 11.2H. There exists a region of negative Reynolds shear stress near the fence top due to the highly convex (stabilizing) streamline-curvature of the upstream flow. The large eddy structure in the separated shear layer seems to have significant influence on the development of the separated shear layer and the reattachment process.

An analytical model for predicting the shear strength of prestressed concrete beams was developed, applying the previously proposed strain-based shear strength model. In flexure-compression member without shear reinforcement, compression zone of intact concrete primarily resist to the shear force rather than tension zone. The shear capacity of concrete at the compression zone was defined based on the material failure criteria. The shear capacity of the compression zone was evaluated along the inclined failure surface considering interaction with the normal stress. Since the distribution of normal stress varies due to the flexural deformation of member, the shear capacity was defined as a function of the flexural deformation. Finally, the shear strength was determined at the intersection of the shear capacity curve and the shear demand curve. As a result of the comparisons to prior test data, the proposed model accurately predicted the shear strength of specimens.
The characteristics of the skin shear stress distribution for the fixed length of the ground anchor are extremely nonlinear and the engineering mechanisms are complex relatively. So it is difficult to design the anchors simulating the actual behavior by considering various soil conditions and nonlinear behavior. Due to these limits, constant skin shear stress distributions for the whole fixed length of the ground anchor are usually assumed in the design for the sake of convenience. In this study, to assess the pull-out behavior of the tension-type ground anchors, the in-situ pull-out tests in weathered-soil conditions were carried out. Based on the test results, the skin shear behaviors for the fixed length of tension-type ground anchors were established and the multi-linear slip shear model predicting this behavior and an analytical technique applying this model were proposed. From the similarity between the results of the in-situ pull-out tests and those of the analytical technique, the applicability and availability of the multi-linear slip shear model and the proposed analytical technique were verified. The maximum shear stress was developed at the start point of the fixed length acting with the smaller load than the maximum pull-out load but the minimum shear stress was developed at the start point of the fixed length and the maximum shear stress was developed at the point apart from the start point of the fixed length after the maximum pull-out load.
A finite element model is presented for the analysis of composite steel-concrete beams based on a refined high-order theory. The employed theory satisfies all the kinematic and stress continuity conditions at the layer interfaces and considers effects of the transverse normal stress and transverse flexibility. The global displacement components, described by polynomial or combinations of polynomial and exponential expressions, are superposed on local ones chosen based on the layerwise or discrete-layer concepts. The present finite model does not need the incorporating any shear correction factor. Moreover, in the present $C^1$-continuous finite element model, the number of unknowns is independent of the number of layers. The proposed finite element model is validated by comparing the present results with those obtained from the three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis. In addition to correctly predicting the distribution of all stress components of the composite steel-concrete beams, the proposed finite element model is computationally economic.

A general structural model, which is an extension of the Vlassov theory, is developed for the analysis of composite rotor blades with elastic couplings. A comprehensive analysis applicable to both thick-and thin-walled composite beams, which can have either open- or closed profile is formulated. The theory accounts for the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and transverse shear deformations. A semi-complementary energy functional is used to account for the shear stress distribution in the shell wall. The bending and torsion related warpings and the shear correction factors are obtained in closed form as part of the analysis. The resulting first order shear deformation theory describes the beam kinematics in terms of the axial, flap and lag bending, flap and lag shear, torsion and torsion-warping deformations. The theory is validated against experimental results for various cross-section beams with elastic couplings.
The success of porcelain laminate veneer depends on the bond strength between tooth structure and ceramic restoration and the design of tooth preparation. In particular, incisal coverage and incisal finish line are the two most important factors in long-term fracture resistance. Although the majority of clinicians are practicing incisal coverage and there are various opinions on the geo-metrical ratio between the clinical crown length of the remaining tooth structure and the length of incisal extension in porcelain laminate veneer and the optimal incisal finish lines. scientific evidence still loaves much to be desired. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the amounts of incisal coverage and the types of incisal finish line on the stress distribution in maxillary anterior porcelain laminate veneers under two different loading conditions. Three-dimensional finite element models of a maxillary anterior porcelain veneer with differ-ent amounts of incisal coverage ; 0, 1, 2, and 3mm and different incisal finish lines feathered edge, incisal bevel, reverse bevel and lingual chamfer with various amounts of lingual extension were developed. 300N force was applied at the point 0.5mm cervical of the linguoincisal edge in two loading conditions ; A) 125 degrees, B) 132 degrees. Tensile and compressive stress in ceramic and shear stress in the resin cement layer were analyzed using three-dimensional finite element method. The results were as follows : 1. The types of incisal finish line had more influence on the stress distribution in porcelain laminate veneer than the amounts of incisal coverage. 2. In case of no incisal coverage, incisal beveled laminate exhibited more evenly distributed tensile stress than feathered edged laminate. And in case of incisal coverage, reverse beveled laminate and lingual chamfered laminate with 1mm lingual extension exhibited more evenly distributed tensile stress than lingual chamfered laminates with 2mm and 3mm lingual extension. 3. As long as the lingual chamfer goes, less tensile stress was found at the incisal edge, while much more tensile stress was found at the lingual margin area in proportion to the length of lingual extension. 4. Under 125 degree load, tensile stress in porcelain laminate veneer had increased compared with that under 132 degree load and the difference exhibited by the change of the amount of tooth support was larger. 5. The types of incisal finish line and the distance from the incisal finish line to the loading point had more influence on the shear stress distribution in the resin cement layer than the amounts of incisal coverage. In contrast loading condition had little influence.
The degree of work hardening in the subsurface zones varied with the experimental conditions under the rolling contact fatigue wear test of high carbon Cr-Ti alloy steel was evaluated by the distribution of residual stresses. Surface residual stresses before the test did not affect the wear property. Surface residual stresses after the test decreased by the increase of contact stress and running. velocity. but the maximum compressive residual stress and its depth of saturation in the subsurface zone increased. The relationship between these experimental results and the distribution of the theoritical shear stress was also discussed.
Fatigue crack in most rails take place by rolling contact between wheel and rail in railway industry. Therefore, it is critical to understand the rolling contact phenomena, especially for the three-dimensional situation. In this paper the steady-state rolling contact problem of KTX wheel and rail (UIC60) has been studied with three-dimensional finite element analysis. The variation of contact pressure and contact stresses on rolling contact surface were obtained using the finite element method. The three-dimensional distribution of contact stresses on the contact surface are investigated. Results show that the distribution of shear stress and contact stress (von Mises) on the contact surface varies rapidly as a result of the variation of stick-slip region. The contact stress at the leading edge is greater than at the trailing edge because of stick and slip phenomena.

In recent years. finite element methods have been used with increasing effectiveness in analysis of displacements and stresses within soil masses. However, one of the weakest links in the analytical representations used in these methods is the models of the material behaviour. Herein is discribed a modification to the finite element methods that allows solution problems with realistic stress-strain relation for soils. A finite element program for the precision prediction of the stress distribution within foundation has been developed using the elasto-plastic Work-Hardening model. The developed program is verified by comparing the results of this study with the tested results for Sacramento river sand. The main results obtained from the numerical examples are as follows: The vertical total stress increments are insensitive to drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The horizontal total stress increments are considerably affected by the drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The maximum shear stresses are affected by the drainage only in elasto-ptastic meterirals. The excess pore water pressures and the volumetric strains not only are considerably affected by the constitutive equation of materials. but also have almost similar distribution.
