In this paper, we propose a 3D shape restoration system which measures height and surface shape of transparent ITO glass and delivers errors in focal length and incident angle of laser beam to femto-second laser micromachining. The proposed system is composed of a line scan laser, a high resolution camera, a linear motion guide synchronized to image capturing, and a control station. Also, we define the sensitivity indices that represent a relation between measurement error and a position of a camera and scan laser, and utilize it for optimum design. The results of the proposed system are compared with results of SPM(Scanning Probe Microscope) and prove the usefulness of the system.
An eigenvalue design sensitivity formulation of a general nonsymmetric-matrix rotor-bearing system is devised. using the DDM (direct differential method). Then, investigations on the design sensitivities of critical speeds are carried out for an APU turbogenerator with a spline shaft connection. Results show that the dependence of the rate of change of the critical speed on the stiffness changes of bearing models of spline shaft connection points is negligible, and thereby their modeling uncertainty does not present any problem. And the passing critical speeds up to the 4th critical speed are not sensitive to the design stiffness coefficients of four main bearings. Further, the dependence of the rate of change of the critical speed on the shaft-element length changes shows quantitatively that the spline shaft has some limited influence on the 4th critical speed but no influence on the 1st to 3rd critical speeds. With no adverse effect from the spline shaft, the APU system achieves a critical speed separation margin of more than 40% at a rated speed of 60,000 rpm.

Design sensitivity analysis and topology design optimization for a piezoelectric crystal resonator are developed. The piezoelectric crystal resonator is deformed mechanically when subjected to electric charge on the electrodes, or vice versa. The Mindlin plate theory with higher-order interpolations along thickness direction is employed for analyzing the thickness-shear vibrations of the crystal resonator. Thin electrode plates are masked on the top and bottom layers of the crystal plate in order to enforce to vibrate it or detect electric signals. Although the electrode is very thin, its weight and shape could change the performance of the resonators. Thus, the design variables are the bulk material densities corresponding to the mass of masking electrode plates. An optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal topology of electrodes, maximizing the thickness-shear contribution of strain energy at the desired motion and restricting the allowable volume and area of masking plates. The necessary design gradients for the thickness-shear frequency(eigenvalue) and the corresponding mode shape(eigenvector) are computed very efficiently and accurately using the analytical design sensitivity analysis method using the eigenvector expansion concept. Through some demonstrative numerical examples, the design sensitivity analysis method is verified to be very efficient and accurate by comparing with the finite difference method. It is also observed that the optimal electrode design yields an improved mode shape and thickness-shear energy.

This paper discusses design sensitivity analysis and its application to a structural dynamics modification. Eigenvalue derivatives are determined with respect to the element parameters, which include intrinsic property parameters such as Young's modulus, density of the material, diameter of a beam element, thickness of a plate element, and shape parameters. Derivatives of stiffness and mass matrices are directly calculated by derivatives of element matrices. The first and the second order derivatives of the eigenvalues are then mathematically derived from a dynamic equation of motion of FEM model. The calculation of the second order eigenvalue derivative requires the sensitivity of its corresponding eigenvector, which are developed by Nelson's direct approach. The modified eigenvalue of the structure is then evaluated by the Taylor series expansion with the first and the second derivatives of eigenvalue. Numerical examples for simple beam and plate are presented. First, eigenvalues of the structural system are numerically calculated. Second, the sensitivities of eigenvalues are then evaluated with respect to the element intrinsic parameters. The most effective parameter is determined by comparing sensitivities. Finally, we predict the modified eigenvalue by Taylor series expansion with the derivatives of eigenvalue for single parameter or multi parameters. The examples illustrate the effectiveness of the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis for the optimization of the structures.

In this paper, the CAD data for the optimal shape design obtained by isogeometric shape optimization is directly used to fabricate the specimen by using 3D printer for the experimental validation. In a conventional finite element method, the geometric approximation inherent in the mesh leads to the accuracy issue in response analysis and design sensitivity analysis. Furthermore, in the finite element based shape optimization, subsequent communication with CAD description is required in the design optimization process, which results in the loss of optimal design information during the communication. Isogeometric analysis method employs the same NURBS basis functions and control points used in CAD systems, which enables to use exact geometrical properties like normal vector and curvature information in the response analysis and design sensitivity analysis procedure. Also, it vastly simplify the design modification of complex geometries without communicating with the CAD description of geometry during design optimization process. Therefore, the information of optimal design and material volume is exactly reflected to fabricate the specimen for experimental validation. Through the design optimization examples of elasticity problem, it is experimentally shown that the optimal design has higher stiffness than the initial design. Also, the experimental results match very well with the numerical results. Using a non-contact optical 3D deformation measuring system for strain distribution, it is shown that the stress concentration is significantly alleviated in the optimal design compared with the initial design.

In this paper, we develop continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) methods using both direct differential method (DDM) and adjoint variable method (AVM) for non-shape design problems. The developed DSA method is further utilized for the topology design optimization of 3-dimensional structures. In numerical examples, the analytical DSA results are verified using finite difference ones. The topology optimization method yields very reasonable results in physical point of view.
A numerical procedure for optimizing the shape of three-dimensional sedimentation tank is presented to maximize its sedimentation efficiency. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis for multi-phase flow. Standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model is used as a turbulence closure. Three design variables such as, tank height to center feed wall diameter ratio, blockage ratio of center feed wall and angle of distributor are chosen as design variables. Sedimentation efficiency is defined as an objective function. Full-factorial method is used to determine the training points as a means of design of experiment. Sensitivity of each design variable on the objective function has been evaluated. And, optimal values of the design variables have been obtained.

This paper presents an optimal design process using beads on a body panel to improve interior noise of a passenger vehicle. Except modification of structural members, it is difficult to find effective countermeasures that can work for the intermediate frequency range from 100 Hz to 300 Hz which lies between the booming and low medium frequency. In this study, it is a major goal to find additional counter-measures for this intermediate frequency range by performing optimal design of beads on body panels. The proposed method for design optimization consists of 4 sub-steps, that is, a) problem definition, b) cause analysis, c) countermeasure development and d) validation. The objective function is minimization of interior noise level. The major design variables are the geometrical shape of a bead and combination of beads on the critical panels. Sensitivity analysis and optimization are performed according to the predefined process for an optimal design. It is verified that the proposed design decreases the level of noise transfer function above 5 dB.

Using the level set and the meshfree methods, we develop a topological shape optimization method applied to linear elasticity problems. Design gradients are computed using an efficient adjoint design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method. The boundaries are represented by an implicit moving boundary(IMB) embedded in the level set function obtainable from the "Hamilton-Jacobi type" equation with the "Up-wind scheme". Then, using the implicit function, explicit boundaries are generated to obtain the response and sensitivity of the structures. Global nodal shape function derived on a basis of the reproducing kernel(RK) method is employed to discretize the displacement field in the governing continuum equation. Thus, the material points can be located everywhere in the continuum domain, which enables to generate the explicit boundaries and leads to a precise design result. The developed method defines a Lagrangian functional for the constrained optimization. It minimizes the compliance, satisfying the constraint of allowable volume through the variations of boundary. During the optimization, the velocity to integrate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained from the optimality condition for the Lagrangian functional. Compared with the conventional shape optimization method, the developed one can easily represent the topological shape variations.
Static or dynamic elastomeric O-ring seals are installed between joining parts, and play key roles of high pressure-tightening. Sealing performance and structural safety of the O-ring are dependent on groove design, plain diameter, squeeze and applications such as pressure and temperature. In this study, to solve O-ring problem squeezed and highly pressurized under laterally one-sided constrained condition, hyperelastic FE analyses are performed, and FE results are compared with measured ones by computer-aided tomography, deformed shape and extrusion depth of the O-ring. Through the comparisons, FE analysis technique was verified. In order to evaluate design sensitivity, Taguchi method was used to select FE analysis cases. Adjustment parameters are clearance gap, groove comer radius, plain diameter and squeeze. By means of verified FE analysis technique, it has been analysed how the parameters have effects on contact stress fields, internal stress fields, and extrusion depths. Sealing performance has been evaluated based on contact stress fields and contact widths, and structural safety on internal stress and strain, extrusion lengths.
