  • As most the scanning systems developed until now provide radiation scan plane images of the inspected objects, there has been a limitation in judging exactly the shape of the objects inside a logistics container exactly with only 2-D radiation image information. As a radiation image is just the density information of the scanned object, the direct application of general stereo image processing techniques is inefficient. So we propose that a new volume-based 3-D reconstruction algorithm. Experimental results show the proposed new volume based reconstruction technique can provide more efficient visualization for X-ray inspection. For validation of the proposed shape reconstruction algorithm using volume, 15 samples were scanned and reconstructed to restore the shape using an X-ray stereo inspection system. Reconstruction results of the objects show a high degree of accuracy compared to the width (2.56%), height (6.15%) and depth (7.12%) of the measured value for a real object respectively. In addition, using a K-Mean clustering algorithm a detection efficiency of 97% is achieved. The results of the reconstructed shape information using the volume based shape reconstruction algorithm provide the depth information of the inspected object with stereo X-ray inspection. Depth information used as an identifier for an automated search is possible and additional studies will proceed to retrieve an X-ray inspection system that can greatly improve the efficiency of an inspection.

  • The YORP effect is non-gravitational force that changes the spin-status of asteroid. So far this effect has been directly detected only from the Near-Earth asteroids (Taylor et al. 2007; Lowry et al. 2007, 2014; Breiter et al. 2011; Durech et al. 2008, 2012). Pravec at el. 2008 found the evidences for changing spin rate of small asteroids (3 - 15 km) by the YORP effect in the Main-Belt and Mars-crossing asteroids. The Mars-crossing asteroids (1.3 < q < 1.66 AU) are objects that cross orbit of the Mars. The Mars-crossing asteroids are regarded as one of the main sources for the Near-Earth asteroids. We expect that rotation of Mars-crossing asteroids would be influenced by the YORP effect. We try to search observational evidence of the YORP effect for the Mars-crossing asteroid. Our target 2078 Nanking is a population of the Mars-crossing asteroid. First light-curve of 2078 Nanking was obtained from Mohamed et al. 1994, and Warner et al. 2015 recently published new observational data. We observed this asteroid on 26th Nov. 2014 and 17th Jan. 2015 using SOAO (Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory) 0.61 m telescope with 4K CCD. Using light-curve inversion method (Kaasalainen & Torppa 2001; Kaasalainen et al. 2001), we try to determine the pole orientation and shape model of this asteroid based on the combination of our light-curve and literature photometric data. Knowing spin parameters, such as rotational period and spin axis, are essential for studying the YORP effect. In this presentation, we provide some preliminary results of our recent study: light-curve and processing of shape modeling of 2078 Nanking. We plan to find observational clue for the YORP effect on the Mars-crossing asteroids.

  • This paper proposes a new scheme to obtain enhanced 3D shape information rapidly for WLPSI(White Light Phase Shifting Interferometry). WLPSI is a convenient method to measure the height of the micro products. First we propose an effective method of limiting search interval for detecting the peak of the visibility function in order to obtain 3D shpae information rapidly. Second we propose an automatic base level decision method basad on image processing and a correction algorithm using the least square approximation method to overcome the global tilt problem of the conventional WLPSI algorithms. Third we propose an adaptive filtering method to remove the distortion known as bat-wing effect which appears near the step discontinuity. Experimental results show that the proposed overall technique is fast and provides more enhanced 3D shape information compared with the conventional WLPSI algorithms.

  • A numerical design analysis is conducted to search for an optimal shape of outlet in a rotating-disk CVD reactor. The goal is to suppress flow recirculation that has been found in a reactor having a sudden expansion of flow passage outside of the rotating disk. In order to streamline gas flow, the sidewall at which the flow in the Ekman layer is impinged, is tilted. The axisymmetric laminar flow and heat transfer in the reactor are simulated using the incompressible ideal gas model. For the conventional vertical sidewall, the flow recirculation forming in the corner region could be expanded into the interior to distort the upstream flow. The numerical results show that this unfavorable phenomenon inducing back flow could be dramatically suppressed by tilting the sidewall at a certain range of angle. The assessment of deviation in deposition rate based on the characteristic isotherm illustrates that the sidewall tilting may expand the domain of stable plug-like flow regime toward higher pressure. A physical interpretation is attempted to explain the mechanism to suppress flow recirculation.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review size, shape, and crystal structure-dependent toxicity of major metal oxide particles such as silicon dioxide, tungsten trioxide, aluminum oxide, and titanium dioxide as byproducts generated in semiconductor fabrication facility. Methods: To review the toxicity of major metal oxide particles, we used various reported research and review papers. The papers were searched by using websites such as Google Scholar and PubMed. Keyword search terms included '$SiO_2$(or $WO_3$ or $Al_2O_3$ or $TiO_2$) toxicity', 'health effects $SiO_2$(or $WO_3$ or $Al_2O_3$ or $TiO_2$). Additional papers were identified in references cited in the searched papers. Results: In various cell lines and organs of human and animals, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, hepatoxicity, fetotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and histopathological changes were induced by silicon dioxide, tungsten trioxide, aluminium oxide, and titanium dioxide particles. Differences in toxicity were dependent on the cell lines, organs, doses, as well as the chemical composition, size, surface area, shape, and crystal structure of the particles. However, the doses used in the reported papers were higher than the possible exposure level in general work environment. Oxidative stress induced by the metal oxide particles plays a significant role in the expression of toxicity. Conclusions: The results cannot guarantee human toxicity of the metal oxide particles, because there is still a lack of available information about health effects on humans. In addition, toxicological studies under the exposure conditions in the actual work environment are needed.

  • Formulation of the geometric optimization for truss structures based on the elasticity theory turn out to be the nonlinear programming problem which has to deal with the cross-sectional area of the member and the coordinates of its nodes simultaneously. A few techniques have been proposed and adopted for the analysis of this nonlinear programming problem for the time being. These techniques, however, bear some limitations on truss shapes, loading conditions and design criteria for the practical application to real structures. A generalized algorithm for the geometric optimization of the truss structures, which can eliminate the above mentioned limitations, is developed in this study. The algorithm proposed utilizes the two-levels technique. In the first level which consists of two phases, the cross-sectional area of the truss member is optimized by transforming the nonlinear problem into SUMT, and solving SUMT utilizing the modified Newton Raphson method. In the second level, which also consists of two phases the geometric shape is optimized utillzing the unindirectional search technique of the Powell method which make it possible to minimize only the objective functlon. The algorithm proposed in this study is numerically tested for several truss structures with various shapes, loading conditions and design criteria, and compared with the results of the other algorithms to examine its applicability and stability. The numerical comparisons show that the two- levels algorithm proposed in this study is safely applicable to any design criteria, and the convergency rate is relatively fast and stable compared with other iteration methods for the geometric optimization of truss structures. It was found for the result of the shape optimization in this study to be decreased greatly in the weight of truss structures in comparison with the shape optimization of the truss utilizing the algorithm proposed with the other area optimum method.

  • The Soswaewon Garden, which was constructed by Yang San-Bo around 1520, is a private traditional garden in Korea. Soswaewon Garden has long been and still is the focus of continuous research. However, relatively few studies have been conducted on the restoration of buildings that were lost in the past. The Goam-Jeongsa and Boohwondang buildings, which were lost in 1597 during the Japanese invasion, were restored in 1614 and depicted in a picture of Soswaewon Garden in 1755. However, they eventually disappeared and no longer exist in the present. Therefore, the restoration of these two buildings is considered an urgent task. This research aims to search for the original location of these buildings and estimate their size and shape in terms of physical space. Several years ago, an estimation of the building site was carried out, providing a stepping stone on this matter. This can be studied through "Soswaewon's 48 quatrains with five Chinese characters in each line," "Soswaewon-sasil," and "Soswaewon's drawing." Some parts of the shape of Soswaewon also appear in the "Yuseoseokrok," which is helpful. Thus, in this research, information on the Goam-Jeongsa and Boowondang buildings appearing in research results and literature to date are collectively analyzed. The location and architectural features of both buildings are identified by focusing on excavations. Also, for the purpose of restoration planning, base data on the location, size, and shape of both buildings are presented. In line with this process, a valid restoration plan is presented by analyzing the abovementioned historical research materials and comparing empirical data, such as excavation results.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop an efficient method for the quick determination of multiple isocenters plans to provide optimal dose distribution in sterotactic radiosurgery. A Spherical dose model was developed through the use of fit to the exact dose data calculated in a 18cm diameter of spherical head phantom. It computes dose quickly for each spherical part and is useful to estimate dose distribution for multiple isocenters. An automatic computer search algorithm was developed using the relationship between the isocenter move and the change of dose shape, and adapted with a spherical dose model to determine isocenter separation and cellimator sizes quickly and automatically. A spheric81 dose model shows a comparable isodose distribution with exact dose data and permits rapid calculations of 3-D isodoses. the computer search can provide reasonable isocenter settings more quickly than trial and error types of plans, while producing steep dose gradient around target boundary. A spherical dose model can be used for the quick determination of the multiple isocenter plans with 3 computer automatic search. Our guideline is useful to determine the initial multiple isocenter plans.

  • In this paper, we present a new effective algorithm for element failure compensation of Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC). While the GSC is well formulated, little works have been done on array element compensation in the presence of faulty elements. Element failure changes the problem of a linearly equally spaced array into that of an unequally spaced array. Typical research approaches have been directed at using search techniques to optimize unequally spaced arrays. The proposed algorithm matches the linear constraint conditions and the general shape of the desired beam pattern at the expense of an increase of beam-width in the overall main lobe. Numerical results are included to demonstrate the capability of compensation for various situations.
