The Effect of Process Variables on Mechanical Properties and Formability in GTA Welds of Commercial Pure Titanium Sheet (순 Ti 박판 GTA 용접부의 기계적 성질 및 성형성에 미치는 공정변수의 영향)

  • In this work, the effect of welding variables on weldability of gas tungsten arc(GTA) welding was investigated with experimental analysis for a commercial pure(CP) titanium (Grade.1). The GTA welding tests on sheet samples with 0.5mm in thick were carried out at different process variables such as arc length, welding speed and electrode shape. In order to search an optimum arc length with full penetration, bead- on-plate welding before butt-welding were performed with different arc length conditions. From the bead- on-plate welding results, the optimum condition considering arc stability and electrode loss was obtained in the arc length of 0.8mm. Butt-welding tests based on the arc length of 0.8mm were carried out to achieve the optimum conditions of welding speed and electrode shape. Optimum conditions of welding speed and electrode shape were suggested as 10 mm/s and truncated electrode shape, respectively. It was successfully validated by the microstructural observation, tensile tests, micro-hardness tests and formability tests.

  • Unlike former researches, this study for developing the caricature generator began observing the methods that other caricature experts have adopted. According to the observation, it seemed that experts tried to exaggerate characteristics of the target shape from other similar objects. When we are saying "This is similar to that," we give salience to their difference among the identical form groups. This study was to find the most similar geometry form to the target shape and then to transform its form through exaggeration. The research scope was restricted to exaggerate the outline shape of two-dimensional looped curve as a caricature form. For this, the author discussed the following: (a) organization method of four kinds of similar geometry form database, (b) search method to find the pertinent similar geometry form, (c) arrangement method for those searched data, and (d) method to exaggerate the target shape. Human faces and cars were selected as research categories to make the database. According to the survey over the transformed results, it was proved its possibility.

A Study on the Shape-Based Motion Estimation For MCFI (MCFI 구현을 위한 형태 기반 움직임 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation(MCFI) has been used to reduce motion jerkiness for dynamic scenes and motion blurriness for LCD-panel display as post processing for large screen and full HD(high definition) display. Conventionally, block matching algorithms (BMA) are widely used to do motion estimation for simplicity of implementation. However, there are still several drawbacks. So in this paper, we propose a novel shape-based ME algorithm to increase accuracy and reduce ME computational cost. To increase ME accuracy, we do motion estimation based on shape of moving objects. And only moving areas are included for motion estimation to reduce computational cost. The results show that the computational cost is 25 % lower than full search BMA, while the performance is similar or is better, especially in the fast moving region.

Real-Time Face Detection by Estimating the Eye Region Using Neural Network (신경망 기반 눈 영역 추정에 의한 실시간 얼굴 검출 기법)

  • In this paper, we present a fast face detection algorithm by estimating the eye region using neural network. To implement a real time face detection system, it is necessary to reduce search space. We limit the search space just to a few pairs of eye candidates. For the selection of them, we first isolate possible eye regions in the fast and robust way by modified histogram equalization. The eye candidates are paired to form an eye pair and each of the eye pair is estimated how close it is to a true eye pair in two aspects : One is how similar the two eye candidates are in shape and the other is how close each of them is to a true eye image A multi-layer perceptron neural network is used to find the eye candidate region's closeness to the true eye image. Just a few best candidates are then verified by eigenfaces. The experimental results show that this approach is fast and reliable. We achieved 94% detection rate with average 0.1 sec Processing time in Pentium III PC in the experiment on 424 gray scale images from MIT, Yale, and Yonsei databases.

Free Vibrations of Compressive Members Resting on Linear Elastic Foundation (선형 탄성지반 위에 놓인 압축부재의 자유진동)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate both the fundamental and some higher natural frequencies and mode shapes of compressive members resting on the linear elastic foundation. The model of compressive member is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such members subjected to an axial load is derived and solved numerically for calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The Improved Euler method is used to integrate the differential equation and the Determinant Search method combined with the Regula-Falsi method to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. In numerical examples, the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, clamped-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. The convergence analysis is conducted for determining the available step size in the Improved Euler method. The validation of theories developed herein is also conducted by comparing the numerical results between this study and SAP 90. The non-dimensional frequency parameters are presented as the non-dimensional system parameters: section ratio, modulus parameter and load parameter. Also typical mode shapes are presented.

Numerical Computation of Matching Boundary Values of Electromagnetic Wave Absorbers (전파흡수체 정합경계값의 수치계산)

  • The design of broad-band, thin layer electromagnetic wave absorbers usually employs magnetic materials. The common absorber consists of a magnetic material layer bonded to a metal plate at the back. For such structure, a theoretical expression involving six parameters defines the allowable material shape and values of electromagnetic parameters that will produce zero reflection or more practically more than 99% absorption (20dB attenuation). The Secant Method was employed to compute the matching boundary values corresponding to 20dB attenuation. In addition, a search algorithm coupled with the Secant Method was developed to obtain allowable range of material parameters for the design of wave absorbers. These numerical methodes applicable to any six parameters effectively yielded accurate solutions in the least iterations.

Truss structure damage identification using residual force vector and genetic algorithm

  • In this paper, damage detection has been introduced as an optimization problem and a two-step method has been proposed that can detect the location and severity of damage in truss structures precisely and reduce the volume of computations considerably. In the first step, using the residual force vector concept, the suspected damaged members are detected which will result in a reduction in the number of variables and hence a decrease in the search space dimensions. In the second step, the precise location and severity of damage in the members are identified using the genetic algorithm and the results of the first step. Considering the reduced search space, the algorithm can find the optimal points (i.e. the solution for the damage detection problem) with less computation cost. In this step, the Efficient Correlation Based Index (ECBI), that considers the structure's first few frequencies in both damaged and healthy states, is used as the objective function and some examples have been provided to check the efficiency of the proposed method; results have shown that the method is innovatively capable of detecting damage in truss structures.

  • The field based morphing requires the user to set most of the control lines manually which requires much time and skill to get satisfactory results. This thesis proposes a method to acquire semi-automation of image morphing through first acquiring shape information from the source image and the target image, then after the user manually designates the least amount of a pair of feature points, these are used as standards for polygon based vertex search to set the appropriate control line to the source mage and target image, and then using the ratio of control line lengths and space. Using the proposed method, the user can reduce the time setting the control line and unskilled persons can get natural image morphing results while designating the least amount control line.

  • So far, many researches have been done to index high-dimensional feature values for fast content-based image retrieval. Still, many existing indexing schemes are suffering from performance degradation due to the curse of dimensionality problem. As an alternative, heuristic algorithms have been proposed to calculate the result with 'high probability' at the cost of accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new extendible hash-based indexing scheme for high-dimensional feature values. Our indexing scheme provides several advantages compared to the traditional high-dimensional index structures in terms of search performance and accuracy preservation. Through extensive experiments, we show that our proposed indexing scheme achieves outstanding performance.

QP-DTW: Upgrading Dynamic Time Warping to Handle Quasi Periodic Time Series Alignment

  • Dynamic time warping (DTW) is the main algorithms for time series alignment. However, it is unsuitable for quasi-periodic time series. In the current situation, except the recently published the shape exchange algorithm (SEA) method and its derivatives, no other technique is able to handle alignment of this type of very complex time series. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm that combines the advantages of the SEA and the DTW methods. Our main contribution consists in the elevation of the DTW power of alignment from the lowest level (Class A, non-periodic time series) to the highest level (Class C, multiple-periods time series containing different number of periods each), according to the recent classification of time series alignment methods proposed by Boucheham (Int J Mach Learn Cybern, vol. 4, no. 5, pp. 537-550, 2013). The new method (quasi-periodic dynamic time warping [QP-DTW]) was compared to both SEA and DTW methods on electrocardiogram (ECG) time series, selected from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) public database and from the PTB Diagnostic ECG Database. Results show that the proposed algorithm is more effective than DTW and SEA in terms of alignment accuracy on both qualitative and quantitative levels. Therefore, QP-DTW would potentially be more suitable for many applications related to time series (e.g., data mining, pattern recognition, search/retrieval, motif discovery, classification, etc.).
