The semi-implicit scheme proposed by Backhaus is introduced to solve two-dimensional shallow water equation. This mothod is applied for the numerical model solving surface elevation and velocity field of Geum River estuary. For the verification of the method, numerical solutions by this model are compared with ones by Heap's well known explicit model. Solutions of two models resemble each other. The time-step chosen for the semi-implicit scheme turned out to be 3 to 6 times longer than explicit model depending on the stringent CFL criterion. The computation time could be reduced at least 50%. It was proved that this scheme is easy to handle dry banks which can be seen in Geum River estuary and numerical stability is obtained for long time computation.

Under natural condition, many rivers had shallow and gently curved shape in plane. A two dimensional mathematical model of the flow was a very attractive one. The flow characteristics in bended open channels were analyzed. The mathematical model based on the mass and the momentum equation of the two-dimensional unsteady flow was developed by introducing finite difference method and the double sweep algorithm. For the purpose of the verification of this model, the modeling results were applied to the L.F.M flume and the I.I.H.R flume. The results had a good agreement with the experimental data of the flumes. The results could be more close to the experimental data by controlling Chezy Coefficients in order to reduce the effect of friction around side wall, and be studied the importance of the convective term. The water surface profile, the direction and scale of depth average mean velocity and the path of the thread of maximum velocity in bended open channels could be computed.

The satellite image acquired by RADARSAT SAR on August 15, 1996 reveals internal waves in north coastal waters of Cheju Island. It is indicated from the image data, the tidal elevation data, and the bottom topography data, the internal waves seem to be generated by interaction between shallow bottom and tidal currents travelling in the stratified water in the summer time during the tidal changeovers from ebb to flood. The internal waves generated in such condition show patterns of trains of solitons. Probable amplitude of observed solitons is calculated using estimation of the soliton wave length from SAR image data and K-dV equation. Detection of the internal waves is very significant not only to military strategist for underwater maneuvers such as operation of submarines, but also to physical and biological oceanographers. Temporal and spatial variation of the internal waves are needed to be measured by simultaneous in-situ field study together with SAR to examine the nature of these internal waves.

The present modified FUNWAVE-TVD model, which is a modification to its previous version 2.1, is applied to solitary wave propagation and is tested against the experiments of Vincent and Briggs(1989) and Luth et al.(1994). The eddy viscosity breaking scheme is used for comparison with the existing study in the case of breaking experiment. The symmetry of wave-induced current is maintained when the modified model is employed to Vincent and Briggs(1989) breaking experiment, but the symmetry of wave-induced current in previous model is not maintained. A better agreement with the breaking experimental data is obtained in the modified model using eddy viscosity breaking scheme than the shock capturing breaking scheme using nonlinear shallow water equation. For comparison with the schemes in the model, the fourth order MUSCL-TVD scheme by Erduran et al.(2005) and the third order MUSCL-TVD scheme using minmod limiter is applied, and the numerical solutions of solitary wave are compared.

In this study, a numerical model of debris flow considering driftwood and entrainment erosion is developed. Subsequently, numerical simulations based on the observation data of the 2011 Mt. Umyeon are performed. To develop the debris flow model, the Nays2DFlood model, which is a flooding model based on the shallow water equation, is coupled with the transport diffusion of mixed sediment concentration, debris flow bottom shear stress, and entrainment erosion modules. The simulation closely reproduced the depth, flow velocity, and debris flow volume of Mt. Umyeon. In addition, the reproducibility of the simulation result with driftwood is more accurate than that without driftwood. The results of this study can facilitate in establishing measures to reduce debris disasters, thus alleviating the current increase in debris damage due to climate change.
A land nodal seismic system was employed to acquire seismic reflection data using stand-alone cable-free receivers in a land-river area. Acquiring reliable data using this technology is very cost effective, as it avoids topographic problems in the deployment and collection of receivers. The land nodal airgun system deployed on the mouth of the Hyungsan River (in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk Province) used airgun sources in the river and receivers on the riverbank, with subparallel source and receiver lines, approximately 120 m-spaced. Seismic data collected on the riverbank are characterized by a low signal-to-noise (S/N) and inconsistent reflection events. Most of the events are represented by hyperbola in the field records, including direct waves, guided waves, air waves, and Scholte surface waves, in contrast to the straight lines in the data collected conventionally where source and receiver lines are coincident. The processing strategy included enhancing the signal behind the low-frequency large-amplitude noise with a cascaded application of bandpass and f-k filters for the attenuation of air waves. Static time delays caused by the cross-offset distance between sources and receivers are corrected, with a focus on mapping the shallow reflections obscured by guided wave and air wave noise. A new time-distance equation and curve for direct and air waves are suggested for the correction of the static time delay caused by the cross-offset between source and receiver. Investigation of the minimum cross-offset gathers shows well-aligned shallow reflections around 200 ms after time-shift correction. This time-delay static correction based on the direct wave is found essential to improving the data from parallel source and receiver lines. Data acquisition and processing strategies developed in this study for land nodal airgun seismic systems will be readily applicable to seismic data from land-sea areas when high-resolution signal data becomes available in the future for investigation of shallow gas reservoirs, faults, and engineering designs for the development of coastal areas.

The formation of brown-colored precipitates is one of the serious problems frequently encountered in the development and supply of groundwater in Korea, because by it the water exceeds the drinking water standard in terms of color. taste. turbidity and dissolved iron concentration and of often results in scaling problem within the water supplying system. In groundwaters from the Pajoo area, brown precipitates are typically formed in a few hours after pumping-out. In this paper we examine the process of the brown precipitates' formation using the equilibrium thermodynamic and kinetic approaches, in order to understand the origin and geochemical pathway of the generation of turbidity in groundwater. The results of this study are used to suggest not only the proper pumping technique to minimize the formation of precipitates but also the optimal design of water treatment methods to improve the water quality. The bed-rock groundwater in the Pajoo area belongs to the Ca-$HCO_3$type that was evolved through water/rock (gneiss) interaction. Based on SEM-EDS and XRD analyses, the precipitates are identified as an amorphous, Fe-bearing oxides or hydroxides. By the use of multi-step filtration with pore sizes of 6, 4, 1, 0.45 and 0.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$, the precipitates mostly fall in the colloidal size (1 to 0.45 $\mu\textrm{m}$) but are concentrated (about 81%) in the range of 1 to 6 $\mu\textrm{m}$in teams of mass (weight) distribution. Large amounts of dissolved iron were possibly originated from dissolution of clinochlore in cataclasite which contains high amounts of Fe (up to 3 wt.%). The calculation of saturation index (using a computer code PHREEQC), as well as the examination of pH-Eh stability relations, also indicate that the final precipitates are Fe-oxy-hydroxide that is formed by the change of water chemistry (mainly, oxidation) due to the exposure to oxygen during the pumping-out of Fe(II)-bearing, reduced groundwater. After pumping-out, the groundwater shows the progressive decreases of pH, DO and alkalinity with elapsed time. However, turbidity increases and then decreases with time. The decrease of dissolved Fe concentration as a function of elapsed time after pumping-out is expressed as a regression equation Fe(II)=10.l exp(-0.0009t). The oxidation reaction due to the influx of free oxygen during the pumping and storage of groundwater results in the formation of brown precipitates, which is dependent on time, $Po_2$and pH. In order to obtain drinkable water quality, therefore, the precipitates should be removed by filtering after the stepwise storage and aeration in tanks with sufficient volume for sufficient time. Particle size distribution data also suggest that step-wise filtration would be cost-effective. To minimize the scaling within wells, the continued (if possible) pumping within the optimum pumping rate is recommended because this technique will be most effective for minimizing the mixing between deep Fe(II)-rich water and shallow $O_2$-rich water. The simultaneous pumping of shallow $O_2$-rich water in different wells is also recommended.

Most of slope failures are triggered by heavy rainfall during rainy season. If the rain keeps on for the season, the water content of the ground increases and its matric suction decrease, and then the safety factor of soil slope gets lower. The change of water table level for soil slope stability dose not describe the behavior of the soil slope in real situation, hence it may be necessary to modify the design standard for slope stability in association with rain infiltration. For correct design, economical construction, and maintenance of a soil slope, unsaturated flow analysis is needed for estimation of slope instability regarding water infiltration and soil behavior on unsaturated soil slopes. The entire soil slope cannot be saturated by prolonged rainfall and wetting band depth (saturated zone) just deepens from slope surface, hence the cause of the shallow surface slide is the wetting band depth depending on rainfall duration and intensity. Therefore, the paper presents the differences between theoretical equation and numerical analysis for wetting band depth on soil surface and its safety factor, and compares the slope stability obtained from unsaturated flow analysis with that obtained from conventional slope stability analysis.
In general, the upstream dam changes downstream flow regime dramatically, i.e., from natural flow regime to hydropeaking flows. This study investigates the impact of the natural flow pattern on downstream fish habitat in a regulated river in Korea using the physical habitat simulation. The study area is a 13.4 km long reach of the Geum-gang River, located downstream from the Yongdam Dam, Korea. A field monitoring revealed that three fish species are dominant, namely Zacco platypus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, and Opsariichthys bidens, and they account for 70% of the total fish community. Specially, Opsariichthys bidens is an indigenous species in the Geum-gang River. The three fish species are selected as target fish species for the physical habitat simulation. The Nays2D model, a 2D shallow water equation solver, and the HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) model are used for hydraulic and habitat simulations, respectively. To assess the impact of the natural flow pattern, this study uses the annual natural flow regime and hydropeaking flows from the dam. It is found that the natural flow regime increases significantly the Composite Suitability Index (CSI) in the study reach. Then, using the Building Block Approach (BBA), the scenarios for the modifying dam operations are presented in the study reach. Both Scenario 1 and scenario 2 are proposed by using the hydrological method considering both magnitude and duration of the inflow and averaging the inflow over each month, respectively. It is revealed that the natural flow regime embodied in scenario 1 and scenario 2 increases the Weighted Usable Area (WUA) significantly, compared to the hydropeaking flows. In conclusion, the modifying the dam operations by restoring to the natural flow pattern is advantageous to fish community.
Optimal data processing parameters were designed to attenuate multiples in seismic data acquired in the south-eastern area of the East Sea, in 2008. Bunch of multiples caused by shallow sea water depth were perceived periodically up to two way travel time of 1,750 ms at every 250 ms over seismic traces. We abbreviated sea bottom multiple as SBM, Peg-leg multiple as PLM, and free-surface multiple as FSM. To attenuate these multiples, seismic data processing flow was constructed including NMO, stack, minimum phase predictive deconvolution filter and wave equation multiple rejections (WEMR). Prevalent multiples were suppressed by predictive deconvolution and remaining multiples were attenuated by WEMR. We concluded that combining deconvolution with WEMR was effective to a seismic data of study area. Derived parameter can be applied to the seismic data processing on adjacent survey area.
