It is well known that the peak strength envelope of geomaterials with no cohesion, such as sand, gravel and rockfill, exhibits significant curvature over a range of stresses. In a practical design of slope, however, the linear Mohr-Coulomb's failure envelope is used as a failure criterion and consequently gives inaccurate safety factors, especially for some ranges of small normal stresses on shallow failure surfaces. Necessity of a nonlinear shear strength envelope in slope stability analysis is on this point. Hence, this study describes how to evaluate nonlinear shear strength of gravel fill materials using the results of large triaxial tests under consolidated-drained condition, and compares the safety factors from slope stability analyses for a homogeneous gravel fill or rockfill embankment incorporating the non-linearity of strength, so as to show its effects on safety factors.
To dissolve the multi-layered model problems, and to complement 2-layered model's simplicity, assumed fluid-fluid-solid 3-layered model. Generally it is known that if the sediment thickness is more than 10 wavelength, the half space's influence to the in-water acoustic field could be disregarded. By tracking the maximum correlation coefficient of calculated results and experimental ones we confirmed that the requirement could be more realized. To calculate the maximum correlation coefficient we used single sensor transmission loss. On the assumption that the sediment sound velocity was 1813 m/s and frequency range 50 kHz to 120 kHz, the conversion condition was from 2.5 to 7.7 wavelength.

Soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) is one of the important issues in the seismic design for evaluating the exact behavior of the system. A seismic design of a structure can be more precise and economical, provided that the effect of SFSI is properly taken into account. In this study, a series of the dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to compare the seismic response of the single degree of freedom(SDOF) structure on the various types of the foundation. The shallow and pile foundations were made up of diverse mass and different conjunctive condition, respectively. The test specimen consisted of dry sand deposit, foundation, and SDOF structure in a centrifuge box. Several types of earthquake motions were sequentially applied to the test specimen from weak to strong intensity of them, which is known as a stage test. Results from the centrifuge tests showed that the seismic responses of the SDOF structure on the shallow foundation and disconnected pile foundation decreased by the foundation rocking. On the other hand, those on the connected pile foundation gradually increased with intensity of input motion. The allowable displacement of the foundation under the strong earthquake, the shallow and the disconnected pile foundation, have an advantage in dissipating the earthquake energy for the seismic design.

Rocking behavior of shallow foundation during the earthquake can reduce the seismic load of the superstructure. The dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to investigate the availability of using rocking behavior for the weathered soil condition. The centrifuge test model was composed of the weathered soil, shallow foundation and single degree of freedom structure. And the accelerations of soil, foundation and structure, and the foundation settlement were measured during the earthquake. From the test result, the seismic load of the structure for the strong earthquake input was reduced by the rocking behavior with foundation uplift and the maximum foundation settlement was less than 0.5% of the foundation width. This shows the potential that the rocking foundation concept can be used in the economical seismic design of foundation for the weathered soil in the future with additional research and verification.

Preliminary conceptual design of hulls is developed and a theoretical evaluation study performed for the comparison of the hull concepts. Systematic variation of the side hull location is carried out to find an optimum position of side hulls for a trimaran by CFD computation. In order to compare computed results, the model test of trimaran was carried out. Shallow water effect is considered due to the route which has critical water depth of 20m for the design speed and investigated on the condition of different speeds and water depth by the numerical computations.
Tidal propagation in the Keum River has been routinely handled by numerical integration of the long fravity wave equation by Dronkers. The dynamic equations include non-linear terms thereby reproducing the shallow water tides. The model was used to compute tidal distribution of the Kum River for aveage spring, mean, neap tidal conditions and further utilised to investigate the waterlevel response within tidal reaches by combined tide and flood discharge effects. The objective of this initial study is to investigate the tidal dynamics of the lower reaches of the Keum River under the condition of before-cross-channel barrage construction.
Unstable seedling stand establishment of wet direct seeding culture of rice is one of the major elements preventing the extension of its culture area. In order to develop methods of seedling stand improvement in direct seeded rice on flooded surfaces, three field experiments were conducted on silty loam soil using a cultivar 'Donjinbyeo' for three years, mainly focusing on water management after seeding and seed soaking with plant growth regulators (PGRs). Under the condition of shallow flooding after seeding, seedling stand rate increased and floating seedling rate decreased in both early and normal season seeding compared to deep flooding. With earlier draining time after seeding, there was a tendency towards preferential growth of the seminal root, increase of seedling stand and decrease of the floating seedling rate. Therefore the highest seedling numbers per unit area and the lowest floating seedling numbers were found upon drainage at 1 day after seeding (DAS), while a contrary tendency was shown upon conventional drainage at 7 DAS. Seed soaking with PGRs such as Metalaxyl or mixing of Metalaxyl with gibberellic acid (GA$_3$) significantly increased the seedling stand. In addition the effects of PGR treatment on seedling stand and the early growth of plants were greater under flooded conditions than under drained conditions after seeding, although draining of water after seeding improved the seedling establishment rate more when compared with the PGR treatment. These results suggest that draining management after seeding or maintaining of shallow flooding for a week is the most effective method to improve the seedling stand rate in wet direct seeding.

It can be assumed that the ocean waves consist of many independent pure sinusoidal components which progress in arbitrary directions. To analyze irregular sea waves, both the spectrum method and the individual wave method have been used. The spectral approach is valid in the region where the water depth is deep and the linear property of velocity distribution is predominent, while the individual wave analysis method in the region where the water depth is shallow and the wave nonlinearity is significant. Therefore, to investigate the irregular wave transformation from the deep water to the shallow water region, it is necessary to relate the frequency spectrum which is estimated by the spectrum analysis method to the i oint probability distribution of wave height, period and direction affected by the boundary condition of the individual wave analysis method. It also becomes important to define the region where both methods can be applied. This study is a part of investigation to establish a systematic approach for analyzing the irregular wave transformation. The region where the spectral approach can be applied is discussed by earring out the experiments on the irregular wave transformation in the two-dimensional wave tank together with the numerical simulation. The applicability of the individual wave analysis method for predicting irregular wave transformation including wave shoaling and breaking and the relation between frequency spectrum and joint probability distribution of wave height and period are also investigated through the laboratory experiment and numerical simualtion.

In this study, Hunt's analytical solution and Ward & Lough's analytical solution for two-layered leaky aquifer system were used to estimate stream depletions due to shallow and deep groundwater pumping, and their differences were compared. Depending on the combination of the separation distance between the stream and the well, the transmissivity and the storage coefficient of the aquifer, and the leakage coefficient between the upper and lower layers, the stream depletion, which is the amount of stream water reduction compared to the amount of groundwater pumping, for each of 45,000 cases was calculated for both shallow and deep groundwater pumping, and the differences were analyzed quantitatively. When the leakage coefficient was very small, with a value of 10-61/d, the difference in the average five-year stream depletion due to the pumping of shallow and deep groundwater showed a large deviation of up to 0.9 depending on the given hydraulic characteristics; this value exponentially decreased as the stream depletion factor (SDF) increased. This exponential relationship gradually weakened as the leakage coefficient increased due to interaction effects between layers, resulting in a small difference of up to 0.2 when the leakage coefficient reached 10-31/d. Under the condition of greater interlayer hydraulic connectivity, there was little influence of the depth of groundwater pumping on the stream water reduction.

Even though there can be a relative long-term or short-term change of their size in natural beaches due to various changes of sea condition such as the location, weather condition (wind and rain) and sea water flow, the budget of deposits in a specific area is generally regarded to be in a condition of equilibrium in terms of technology. However, as coasts are developed by many different kinds of ways (such as construction of sea walls and estuarine, dredging for gathering the aggregate and shore protection construction for establishing a structure) and sources of silt and gravel from rivers are decreased in balanced beaches, the beaches are in a serious danger of lack of sand and sand sources which are one of the maul elements to consist of them. Many swimming beaches in East Sea are directly exposed by waves generated and transmitted from outer seas. On the other hand, the Song-Do sandy beach which is this study's target area has a great condition for beach development because it locates the deepest place that is relatively shallow in Young-Il Man and there is big energy decrease given to waves from outer seas while the waves are reaching the Song-Do beach. Nevertheless, it is considered that artificial condition changes such as dredging for site extension by POSCO, getting straight of Hyoung-San Gang river flow and extension of Po-Hang harbor caused the sand loss of the beach. Therefore, some recovery plans of Song-Do sandy beach will be presented in this study and they will be compared and examined each other by numerical modeling experiment. After that, the best plan will be recommended.
