This paper presents an experimental study on active control of self-excited vibration for a high speed turbomachinery. In order to suppress the self-excited vibration, it is necessary to actively control the air film pressure or the air film thickness. In this study, active pads are used to control the air film thickness. Active pads are supported by pivots containing piezoelectric actuators and their radial position can be actively controlled by applying voltage to the actuators. The transfer characteristics from actuator inputs to shaft vibration outputs are experimentally investigated. In a tilting-pad gas bearing (TPGB), a shaft is supported by the pressurized air film. Four gap sensors were used to measure the vibration of the shaft and PID was used in the feedback control of the shaft vibration. The experimental results show that the self-excited vibration of the rotor can be effectively suppressed if the PID controller gains are properly chosen. As a result we find that the feedback control is effective for suppressing the self-excited vibration of a rotor system using stack-type PZT actuators.
In this paper it is intended to set-up a sound model of the 60,000rpm 100kW prototype APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system, and particularly to investigate the influences of the tie shaft on the rotordynamic characteristics of the entire APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system, employing the dual shaft model. Firstly, a mock-up APU rotor has been constructed to test and verify the model. Analytical natural frequency results have agreed with the corresponding modal test ones to within 5% difference. Then, the rotordynamic characteristics of the prototype APU rotorbearing system have been investigated. Natural vibration and unbalance response analyses results have shown that the inner tie shaft resonance can cause high enough vibration of the outer main rotor shaft. This could be a concern as the rotor journals operate on very thin air film at high speed. It is concluded as a conservative design practice that the inner tie shaft should be explicitly modeled in the rotordynamic analysis of the APU rotor-bearing system.

Coupled transverse shaft vibrations have become the target of great concern in high powered ships such as container ships. Due to increasing ship's dimensions and high propulsive power, resonance frequencies of the propeller shaft system tend to decrease and can appear in some cases within the operating speed range of engine. In this connection, the coupled free transverse vibrations of shaft system in two planes are theoretically investigated. This shaft system carries a number of discs and is flexibly supported by a number of bearing stiffness are considered for the calculation. Transfer matrix method is applied to calculate the shaft responses in both planes. A digital computer program is developed to calculate the shaft responses of the coupled transverse vibrations in two planes. An experimental model shaft system is made. It is composed of a disc, shafts, ball bearings thrust bearings and flexible bearing supports. The shaft system is excited by an electrical magnet, and shaft vibration responses in two planes are measured with the strain gage system. From these measurements, the natural frequencies of the shaft system in both planes are found out. The developed program is also used to calculate the shaft vibration responses of experimental model shaft system. From the results of these calculations, the natural frequencies of shaft system in two planes are derived. Theoretical predictions of model shaft natural frequencies show good agreements with its esperimental measurements.
In this paper, a simplified model is studied to predict analytically the vibration from the helical gear system due to an axial excitation of helical gears. The simplified model describes gear, shaft, bearing, and housing. In order to obtain the axial force of helical gears, the mesh stiffness is calculated in the load deflection relation. The axial force is obtained from the solution of the equation of motion, using the mesh stiffness. It is used as a longitudinal excitation of the shaft, which in turn drives the gear housing through the bearing. In this study, the shaft is modeled as a rod, while the bearing is modeled as a parallel spring and damper only supporting longitudinal forces. The gear housing is modeled as a clamped circular plate with viscous damping. For the modeling of this system, transfer matrices for the rod and bearing are used, using a spectral method with four pole parameters. The model is validated by finite element analysis. Using the model, parameter studies are carried out. As a result, the linearized dynamic shaft force due to the gear excitation in the frequency domain was proposed. Out-of-plan displacement from the forced vibrating circular plate and the renewed mode normalization constant of the circular plate were also proposed. In order to control the axial vibration of the helical gear system, the plate was more important than the shaft and the bearing. Finally, the effect of the dominant design parameters for the gear system can be investigated by this model.
For the in-line three cylinder engine whose crankshaft has a phase of 120 degrees, the total sum of unbalanced inertia forces occurring in each cylinder will be counterbalanced among three cylinders. However, parts of inertia forces generated at the No.1 and No.3 cylinders will cause a primary moment about the No.2 cylinder. In order to eliminate this out-of-balance moment, a single balance shaft has been attached to the cylinder block so that the engine durability and riding comfort may be further improved. Accordingly, the forced vibration analysis of the in-line three cylinder engine must be implemented to meet the required targets at an early design stage. In this paper, a method to reduce noise and vibration in the 800cc, in-line three cylinder LPG engine is suggested using the multibody dynamic simulation. The static and dynamic balances of the in-line three cylinder engine are investigated analytically. The multibody dynamic model of the in-line three cylinder engine is developed where the inertia properties of connecting rod, crankshaft, and balance shaft are extracted from their FE-models. The combustion pressure within the No.1 cylinder in three significant operating conditions(1500rpm-full load, 4000rpm-full load and 7000rpm-no load)is measured from the actual tests to excite the engine. The vibration velocities at three engine mounts with and without balance shaft are evaluated through the forced vibration analysis. Obviously, it is shown that the vibration of the in-line three cylinder engine with balance shaft is reduced to the acceptable level .
This paper presents a vibration analysis method of crank shaft of six cylinder internal combustion engine. For simple analysis journal, pin and arm parts were assumed to have uniform section. Transfer Matrix Method was used, considering branched part and coordinate transformation part. Natural frequencies, modeshapes and transfer functions of crank shaft were investigated based upon the Euler beam theory: It was shown that the calculated natural frequencies, modeshapes agree well with the existing paper results.
To predict the noise and vibration characteristics of induction motor system, it is necessary to develop the mathematical model including all the mechanical elements such as shaft, blower, rotor, fan, bearing, case and mounting parts. Coupling effect between case-mount system and rotor- shaft system including shaft, blower, rotor, fan and bearing is examined. Impact exciting experimentation was done in order to verify vibration model of the induction motor system. From experimental results, we can appreciate that the natural frequencies of induction motor system are in good agrements with analysis.
A projected 100 kW APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system has a main outer shaft, which is composed of some numbers of segmented sections for manufacturing and assembly conveniences. For a secure assembly of the segmented sections a tie shaft or inner shaft is installed inside of the outer shaft and a tensional axial preload of 50,000 N is provided to it. In this paper it is intended to set-up a sound modeling method of the APU rotor system, and particularly, the influences of the tie shaft on the rotordynamic characteristics of the entire APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system are investigated. Analysis results show that as a conservative design practice the inner tie shaft should be actively modeled in the rotordynamic analysis of the APU rotor-bearing system, and its effects on the dynamic behaviors of the outer shaft should be thoroughly design-reviewed.
In order to reduce the booming noise caused by first bending mode of drive shaft, this paper proposes a simulation program for prediction of the bending mode frequency of any tubular shaft. This program consists of a pre-processor for modeling of geometrical shape of drive shaft and applying the boundary conditions of various joints, a processor for constructing of global finite element matrices using beam elements and an eigen-solver based on MATLAB program. Using this simulation program, the effective and accurate FE model for a shaft attached in vehicle can be obtained by aid of database for stiffness of each joint. Thus the resonance frequencies and mode shapes of a shaft can be calculated accurately. Because the effect of the resonance on interior noise can be verified, more improved shaft can be proposed at the early stage of design.
This paper describes the characteristics of vibration of a hydraulic turbine mainly due to cavitation occurrence. The analysis of vibration spectra of the turbine shaft shows that hub vortex cavitation occurs in the downstream of the turbine runner, which is verified from coherence analysis between shaft vibration displacement and dynamic pressure at the draft tube. Even though acceleration level measured at the guide vane lever, which is usually used for evaluation of cavitations performance, is decreased during forced aeration, it is found from the analysis of dynamic pressure spectra that cavitation around runner blades still remains unchanged. It is also found that lateral vibration of the turbine shaft is mainly due to the hub vortex cavitation of the turbine runner.
