Vibration Control of Condensate Motors in Nuclear Powerplant By Bearing Redesign (베어링 재설계에 의한 원전 COP motor의 진동 제어)

  • This paper presents the summary of control of abnormal vibration found in the COP motors of a nuclear power plant. All six identical units of COP pump-motor assemblies showed unstable vibration pattern of which one or two showed higher vibration enough to exceed the allowable level from the installation stage. Many trials of test, measurement, overhaul and replacement had been repeated to investigate and solve the problem but only to reach unsatisfactory settlement. Recently several times of site tests are made and followed by significant diagnostic actions in which the authors group participated. It was found that the coupled shafting system of motor and pump is in close resonance with the $1^{st}$ shaft rotating speed. Redesign of topside motor bearing clearance is made to increase bearing stiffness and hence to avoid the resonance which consequently led to reduce the troubled vibration to allowable and stable status.

  • The increasing needs for higher cargo capacity in the container vessels' fleet has led to ship builder's demand for higher power output rating engine to meet the propulsion requirement, thus, leading to the development of super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. This large sized bore engines with more than 12 cylinders are capable of delivering power output up to more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating. The thrust variation force due to axial vibration occurring in propulsion shafting of these ships are transmitted to ship structure via thrust bearing. This force may vibrate the super structure of ship in the fore-aft direction and the fatigue strength of crank shaft can be decreased by additional bending stress increase in crank shaft pin and journal. In this paper, the axial vibration of propulsion shafting system on the 14RT-flex96C super large diesel engine with 14 cylinders is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.

  • Field balancing is required in any kind of phase information for the determination location balancing mass toward a rotor unbalance mass. Phase or phase angle is a measurement of the relationship of how one vibration signal which relates to another vibration signal and is commonly used to calculate the placement of balance weight. In this paper, A right guideline shows the photo optical speed sensor as the external keyphasor is a very useful when diagnosing machinery vibration problems on considering a phase lag comparing to the laser optical speed sensor. Some experimental results generate the interesting phase errors when appling to a wrong conditions. So, Usage of photo optical speed sensor which is used primarily to measure the shaft rotating speed serves as a reference for measuring vibration phase information has effect on the placement of phase angle how it was misunderstood. This paper will help a right method to search for the position of balancing weight and serves as baseline for further measurements using low cost and much easier user convenience. It is concluded that the propose baseline is likely to be applicable to apply to the practical field balancing weight.

Development of Vibration Compensator for Vertical Vibration Damping of Ships (선박의 수직방향 진동 감쇠를 위한 진동보상기의 개발)

  • The aim of this study is to develop a vertical vibration compensator that attenuates the vertical vibration of ships. The vibration compensator was designed according to the principle of generating vertical excitation forces by rotating two eccentric bodies of the same mass in opposite directions at the same rotational speed. In addition, the structural stability was analyzed using the finite element method. The maximum stress in the drive shaft was 95.6 MPa, which was approximately 35% of the allowable stress of the shaft material (SM45C, 270 MPa). The acceleration signals of the vibrator compensator body and the testbed were determined to evaluate the efficiency of the vibration compensator and the designed excitation forces. Subsequently, the excitation forces were estimated based on the relationship between force and acceleration. The estimated results were very close to the theoretical values with an error of less than 3%.

  • The analysis of a mechanical system, body traveling along the elastic structure, has been a topic of interest. The establishment of analytical method for the development and control of this system is required in the fields of many machine operations such as modern weapons and high-speed feed drive system for a machine tool. The dynamic equations are derived on the torsion of a cantilever hollow shaft induced by the spin-up of a moving mass and the displacement of the mass. Influences of design parameters such as the inertia ratio, the mass moving speed and the friction coefficient are discussed on the transient response of the system.

  • Pump-storage power plants, which pumps water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir using the extra electronic power at night and generates the electronic power in the daytime, are more increasing. Currently it has a tendency to be high-head large-capacity machines. So in the processing of design, we need to know the vibration characteristics of pump-turbine shaft system sufficiently. In this paper, we developed the computer programs for analyzing pump-turbine shaft system considering magnetic force of generator, hydraulic force at runner, dynamic characteristics of guide bearings and the effect of add mass of water. And the superiority of this program was verified by applying it to the real model and calculating high quality critical speed, natural mode and unbalance response.

  • This paper describes the fluttering characteristics of the upper pad in a tilting pad journal bearing(6-pad, LOP type) using a steam turbine. In order to investigate the phenomena of the pad fluttering experimentally, the absolute vibration of the upper pads, the relative vibration between the bearing and the shaft and the circumferential distribution of the film thickness are measured under the different values of oil supply flow rate, shaft speed and bearing load.   • Torsion mode or bending mode of drive-line for rear-wheel drive vehicle exists in low frequency band. If resonance exists there between natural mode of driveline and powertrain excitation force, drive-line will manifest excessive vibration response. Also, the vibration response can be transmitted to vehicle body and can induce booming noise. A vehicle in this study exhibits a booming noise problem under specific transmission gear condition. To draw performance improvement plan, finite element analysis technique was used. Modification was evaluated qualitatively and priorities were derived. Finally, effectiveness of best modification was verified through test and full vehicle FE analysis.

  • The spindle motor in a computer hard disk drive can be modeled as a rotor-bearing system supported by the base plate. Ball bearing is the crucial element to determine the stiffness of the spindle motor, and its design parameters and operating conditions determine the dynamic characteristics of the spindle motor. In the analysis of a rotor-bearing system with a short shaft like a spindle motor, the stiffness of the base plate as well as ball bearings must be considered accurately to analyze the dynamic charateristics of a spindle motor. In this paper, the lateral and the axial vibration of the spindle motor were analyzed by the transfer matrix method for the dual-shaft rotor-bearing model and by d.o.f lumped parameter model, respectively. The simulation results had good agreements with the experimental modal testing. The dynamic characteristics were fully investigated for the change of the major design parameters of the spindle motor, i.e. the preload of ball bearings and the rotational speed.
