  • This study derives load characteristics and analyzes the safety of plowshares operating in dry fields. We mounted a three-blade, reversible plow on a 23.7 kW tractor and measured the plow's tractive force as well as the torque from the engine output shaft on the rear axle under various working speeds (L4, M1, M2, M3). We chose a Korean test site of Seomyeon, Chuncheon with sandy soil texture, as determined using the USDA method. We constructed the load spectrum for torque and tractive force using measured data and derived the fatigue life of the plowshare from a stress-cycle (S-N) curve of the plow material. Our results show that the M3 gear maximizes the driving shaft torque loads and, applying the tractive force load spectrum, creates a cumulative damage sum of $4.14{\times}10^{-5}$. Considering sampling time, we estimate a fatigue life of 805 hours while using the M3 gear. When using the other working speeds, however, all of the stress levels fell within the endurance limits and, therefore, our model predicts infinite plowshare lifetimes. For this analysis, we used a yield strength of 1,079 MPa for the plowshare and static safety factors, analyzed using the maximum stress, between 6.83 and 8.63 under each working speed.

  • Induction hardening has been used to improve the torsional strength and characteristics of wear for axle shaft that is used to transmit driving torque from the differential to the wheel in automobiles. After the rapid heating and cooling processes of induction hardening are carried out, the shaft has residual stress and material properties change; this affects the allowable transmitted torque. The objective of this study is to predict the distribution of residual stress and estimate the torsional strength of induction-hardened axle shafts with residual stress. In this study, the finite element method is used to study the thermomechanical behavior of the material, and the results are compared with experimental results. The results indicate that the torsional strength of the axle shaft depends on the surface hardening depth and distribution of residual stress.

  • A new control method for precision robust position control of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor using asymptotically stable adaptive load torque observer is presented in the paper. Precision position control is obtained for the BLDC motor system approximately linearized using the field-orientation method Recently, many of these drive systems use BLDC motors to avoid backlashe. However, the disadvantages of the motor are high cost and complex control because of nonlinear characteristics. Also, the load torque disturbance directly affects the motor shaft. The application of the load torque observer is published in [1] using fixed gain. However, the motor flux linkage is not exactly known for a load torque observer. There is the problem of uncertainty to obtain very high precision position control. Therefore a model reference adaptive observer is considered to overcome the problem of unknown parameter and torque disturbance in this paper. The system stability analysis is carried out using Lyapunov stability theorem. As a result, asymptotically stable observe gain can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance detected by the asymptotically stable adaptive observer is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current which gives fast response. The experimenta results are presented in the paper.

  • Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) have combined characteristics of SRM and magnetic bearing. Production of radial force for rotor shaft magnetic suspension is explained with differential stator windings. Bearingless SRM is simple structurally because the permanent magnet does not exist and bearing does not take the influence at the environment because it does not exist and has strong torque, and loss of bearing by bearing current has the advantage not to exist. In this paper, a design method of bearingless SRM for suspension power and starting torque is proposed. The design model is implement by maxwell.

  • A new control method for precision robust position control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is presented. In direct drive motor systems, a load torque disturbance directly affects the motor shaft. The application of the load torque observer is published in using a fixed gain to solve this problem. However, the motor flux linkage cannot be determined precisely for a load torque observer. Therefore, an asymptotically stable adaptive observer base on a deadbeat observer is considered to overcome the problems of unknown parameters, torque disturbance and a small chattering effect. To find the critical parameters the system stability analysis is carried out using the Liapunov stability theorem.

  • This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a HDD spindle system due to the imperfect roundness of a rotating shaft. The shaft of a spindle motor rotates with eccentricity by the unbalanced mass of the rotating part. The eccentricity generates the run-out of a spindle motor which results in the eccentric motion of a rotating part. Roundness of a shaft affects this motion which limits the memory capacity of a HDD. This research proposes a modified Reynolds equation for the coupled journal and thrust FDBs to include the variable film thickness due to the roundness. Finite element method is used to solve the Reynolds equation for the pressure distribution. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress, respectively. The dynamic behavior is determined by solving the equations of a motion of a HDD spindle system in six degrees of freedom with the Runge-Kutta method to characterize the motion of a rotating part. This research shows that the roundness of a rotating shaft causes the excitation frequency with integer multiple of a rotating frequency.

  • A torque converter, connected to a transmission/transaxle input shaft, connects, multiplies and interrupts the flow of engine torque into the transmission. Damper springs are usually equipped in a torque converter to convert stably the torque power supplied from engine. Damper Springs generally have the most flexible design variables among vehicle transmission parts, so that they could be effective design factors to improve the entire vehicle's performance. Damper spring, however, has geometric complexity after it equipped in a torque converter. For that reason, modeling a damper spring requires expert's knowledge to determine many design parameters and satisfy the functional requirements at the same time. In this paper, we introduce an optimum design method applied in detailed-design stage to reduce design process and financial loss caused by adequate design. Many design variables have to be classified and structuralized for Optimization. This also could make designer concentrate on functional requirements of damper spring, not on design possibility. In addition, modeling an assembled spring has technical restriction with primitives of the current major CAD solutions because of complexity of assembled spring shape. Thus, one of modeling solution presented in this paper since detailed and exact modeling is important for CAE or DMU.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to compare tillage and loads characteristics of three types of rotavators in farmland working condition of Korea. Methods: Tillage operations using three types of rotavators, i.e. rotary-type, crank-type and plow-type, were carried out in a dry field of Korea. The same prime mover tractor was used for driving three types of rotavators, and under several operational conditions, tillage characteristics such as actual working speed, rotavating depth, rotavating width, actual field capacity, flow of tilled soil, soil inversion ratio, and pulverizing ratio were measured. In addition, loads characteristics like torque and required power of Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft were calculated. Results: The average rotavating depth was smaller than the nominal value for all rotavators, and the difference was the greatest in the plow-type rotavator. Nevertheless, the plow-type rotavator showed the largest rotavating depth. The rotavating width was the same as the nominal value of all rotavators. The flow of tilled soil at the same operational conditions was the greatest in the plow-type rotavator and was the smallest in the rotary-type rotavator. In the most commonly used gear conditions of L2 and L3, the average soil pulverizing ratio was the greatest in the rotary-type rotavator, and followed by crank-type and plow-type rotavators in order. In the gear L2 and L3, the plow-type rotavator also had the lowest average soil inversion ratio while the rotary-type and crank-type rotavators had the same soil inversion ratio each other. The average torque and power of PTO shaft in the gear L2 and L3 were the highest in the plow-type rotavator. The load spectra of PTO shaft applying rain flow counting method and Smith-Waston-Topper equation to the measured torque showed that the modified torque amplitude was the greatest in the crank-type rotavator. This may come from the large torque fluctuation of crank-type rotavator during tillage operations. Conclusions: The three types of rotavators had different tillage and loads characteristics. The plow-type rotavator had the deepest rotavating depth, the smallest soil inversion ratio, the largest soil pulverizing ratio and required PTO power. Also, the crank-type rotavator showed a large torque fluctuation because of their unique operational mechanism. This study will help the farmers choose a suitable type of rotavator for effective tillage operations.

  • The coke oven plant on a steel works has not, in the past, been regarded as a prime user of modern instrument technology. The reason for this perception may be due to the fact that the basic design of the coke battery has been changed little over the years. The recording and analysis of oven pushing force on a routine basis is seen as a means of monitoring plant operation. A torque sensor is set up at the shaft of the rotor for measuring pushing force. Pushing force data which is communicated form torque sensor to staor by telemetry method are shown on MMI(Man-Machine Interface) screen and stored in the database automatically. Perhaps the most important feature is that is allows a problem oven to be identified at an early stage and for corrective action to be taken before it develops into a refusal to push. In this way the mechanical loads imposed on the battery structlure can be held to a necessary minimum, so helping to prolong its service life.
