  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological variables related to sexual issues and sexual violence experiences by gender in university students. Methods: A self-report survey collected responses from 469 university students in three regions. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ${\chi}^2$-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: While male students' scores on sexual assertiveness and sexual assault recognition were lower than female students', their scores on gender role stereotype and sexual violence permissiveness were higher. Female students' sexual violence victims were higher than male students', however, their scores on sexual violence perpetrations were lower than male students'. Sexual violence victims and perpetrations experiences were significantly related to sexual assault recognition and sexual violence permissiveness in male and female students. There were significant relationships between sexual violence perpetrations experiences and gender role stereotypes in male students, while there were significant relationships between sexual violence victims and inflictions experiences and sexual assertiveness in female students. Conclusion: The present study suggests that differentiated programs for preventing or arbitrating sexual violence should be developed and applied by gender because there were differences between male and female students in the level of psychological variables related to sexual issues and sexual violence experiences.

  • Objective : This study aims to investigate the relationship between negative sexual experience and psychiatric symptoms by gender and compare the effects of sexual assault and unwanted sexual experiences on psychiatric symptoms in patients with depression or anxiety disorders. Methods : A total of 204 respondents who have had negative sexual experiences of outpatients diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorders were evaluated with AUDIT, PSS, STAI, BDI, and SSI. Independent samples t-test was performed to compare the psychiatric symptom scale scores between male and female and identify the difference of the psychiatric symptom scale scores between those who have had sexual assault and those who have had only unwanted sexual experience. Results : There was no difference in psychiatric symptom scale scores except for AUDIT between male and female in 204 patients with negative sexual experience. There was also no significant difference in AUDIT, PSS, and STAI scores between those who experienced sexual assault and those who experienced only unwanted sexual experiences. BDI and SSI scores are significant higher in those who experienced sexual assault than those who experienced only unwanted sexual experiences. Conclusion : This suggests that male and female may have similar levels of psychiatric symptoms after experiencing negative sexual experiences. Psychiatric symptoms caused by sexual assault may have differences from the psychiatric symptoms caused by unwanted sexual experience. Understanding the differences in psychiatric symptoms according to the type of negative sexual experience may helpful to direct the therapeutic plans.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of traditional korean medical doctors (TKMD) who have treated victims of sexual violence by collecting their qualitative data that cannot be obtained with statistical data. Methods : In-depth interviews were conducted with semi-structured questionnaires for each of 5 TKMDs who had experiences in treating sexual violence victims. For analysis, the interviews were recorded along with their facial expressions and actions during the interview process, and all collected data were analyzed by colaizzi's method. In each process, a 'phenomenological reduction' was applied. Results : The identity of TKMD's experience of treating sexual violence victims was structured into 25 themes, 9 theme clusters, and 4 categories. The 4 categories included 'Professionalism and sense of efficacy', 'Personal life experiences and mental trauma treatment experiences that are mutually influencing each other', 'Factors needed to increase TKMD's participation in treatment of sexual violence victims', 'Deriving the future strategy of traditional korean medicine'. Conclusions : This study derived the essence and meaning of TKMDs' experiences in treating sexual violence victims, and presented future directions of traditional korean medicine in this field. It is expected that the results of this study would be used as the basis for establishing the traditional korean medical support system for sexual violence victims in the context of the korean medical system.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze sexual experience rates according to socio-demographic factors, health behavioral factors, and internet use time, and to identify sex experience related factors in high school students using the data from the 11th Korean Youth Health Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. Methods: A total of 33,744 students (17,346 boys and 16,398 girls) in high schools were analyzed using the SPSS WIN version 22 program. SPSS complex samples methods were used for analyses. Socio-demographic factors, health behavioral factors, and internet use time as independents variables were included. The complex samples logistic regression analyses were used to calculate the odds ratio of the sexual experience according to the socio-demographic factors, health behavioral factors and internet use time. Unweighted frequencies and percentages were represented in result tables. Results: 3.6% of girls and 9.9% of boys in high school had sexual experiences. Daily average smoking amount and daily alcohol drinking amount were a dose-response relationship with sexual experience after considering confounding factors. Students who smoke 10-19 cigarettes had 5.74 times higher risk and 20 cigarettes or more had 7.27 times higher risk of sexual experiences, comparing with non-smoking students, relatively. Likewise, students who drink soju less than 1-2 bottles and more than 2 bottles had 3.82- and 4.35 times higher chance of sexual experiences, compared with non drinking students, respectively. Conclusions: We found that there were the dose-response relationship between health behavioral characteristics and sexual experiences. Further research is needed to identify an interaction effect between smoking and drinking alcohol on sexual experiences in high school students.

  • This investigation analyzed differences in sexual experiences between general and multi-cultural adolescents using the 7th data of youth health behavior online survey and examined effects of fathers' education and sex education on these differences. Specifically, sexual experiences were assigned as dependent variable, multi-cultural background as independent variable, and fathers' education and sex education as moderating variable. Effects of independent and moderating variables were examined using SPSS 20.0 to perform GLM (General Linear Model). As a result, a main effect of multi-cultural background was verified along with the regulation effects of fathers' education and sex education. Specifically, multi-cultural adolescents had more sexual experiences than general adolescents and the effects of fathers' education and sex education were more significant with multi-cultural adolescents than those with general adolescents. While fathers' education and sex education of general adolescents did not make a big difference in sexual experiences, multi-cultural adolescents whose fathers' education levels were low and those who were not taught sex education had more sexual experiences.

  • The purposes of this phenomenological study were to investigate the sexual experiences of juvenile delinquents, and to understand how ecological systems affected their sexual activities. The participants were 13 adolescents on probation and 12 adolescents from juvenile correctional facilities or prisons. They explained their meanings of sex, their sexual behaviors, and their coping strategies for sexual problems. Participants conceptualized sex as physical intercourse, while excluding the emotional aspects of sex. They accepted adults' sexist attitudes toward male and female sexual behaviors, and followed adults' commercialization of sex. In contrast to their routinizing sexual behaviors, they had neither enough knowledge of sex nor effective strategies to solve sexual problems. The sexual activities of juvenile delinquents were influenced by their peer groups and sexual messages from media and internet, rather than by their tamely and school. The holistic view of the study highlights the importance of interactions between individuals and the ecological systems when interpreting the sexual experiences of juvenile delinquents.
