This paper deals with the water treatment of the leachate from sewage filled ground by a pulsed power technology. Leachate from sewage filled ground should be treated below regulation level of COD in order to prevent environmental pollution and usually treated by a chemical method. Among the pollutants mixed in the leachate, chemical compounds of benzene series are known to be difficult to break down, and need to use high cost treat methods. The treatment of the benzene compounds by high power pulsed power supply was studied. For the high-rate, cost-effective treatment of leachate, pulsed power supply should have high repetition rates and require switching devices of long lifetime. In order to meet the demands of the above condition, pulsed power generator based on semiconductor switches using IGBTs as primary switches were developed. The experimental results verified that benzene compounds can be treated effectively by high voltage electric pulses, and this fact indicates that the treatment method by pulsed power source is a promising substitute.
The watershed of Gohyeon Stream was divided into the 10 sub-basins, and 19 sampling points were selected in their tributaries, which the characteristics of the water quality and pollution loads variance were investigated for during the rainy and dry seasons. The results of water quality analysis revealed that the upper watershed(T1~T8) of Gohyeon Stream had a feature of rural area, and its lower watershed(T9~T19) had a feature of the municipal area. The non-point pollution loads of the tributaries were estimated with 2,063, 601, 365, and 45 ton/yr of SS, COD, DIN, and DIP, respectively. The pollution loads of the parameters except DIP were generated about 60% during the rainy season, which suggested that a precipitation significantly influenced on the discharge of non-point source pollution. Meanwhile, the non-point pollution load of DIP was generated about 60% during the ordinary and dry seasons, which suggested that control of a phosphorus pollution source was significantly required during these seasons. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that SS pollution source of the upper watershed was definitely different from that of the lower watershed, that is, the pollution load from the upper watershed was mainly caused by the discharge of SS due to soil erosion in the farmland and forest land during the rainy season, and that of the lower watershed by the discharge of sewage and municipal run-off.
Background: When developing water quality improvement strategies for eutrophic lakes, questions may arise about the relative importance of point sources and nonpoint sources of phosphorus. For example, there is some skepticism regarding the effectiveness of partial reductions in phosphorus loading; because phosphorus concentrations are too high in hypertrophic lakes, in-lake phosphorus concentrations might still remain within typical range for eutrophic lakes even after the reduction of phosphorus loading. For this study, water quality and the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities were monitored in a hypertrophic reservoir (Lake Wangsong) before and after the reduction of phosphorus loading from a point source (a sewage treatment plant) by the installation of a chemical phosphorus-removal process. Results: Before phosphorus removal, Lake Wangsong was classified as hypertrophic with a median phosphorus concentration of $0.232mg\;L^{-1}$ and a median chlorophyll-a concentration of $112mg\;L^{-1}$. The dominant phytoplankton were filamentous cyanobacteria for the most of the ice-free season. Following the installation of the advanced treatment process, phosphorus concentrations were reduced to $81mg\;L^{-1}$, and the N/P atomic ratio increased from 42 to 102. Chlorophyll-a concentrations decreased to $42{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and the duration of cyanobacterial dominance was confined to the summer season. Cyanobacteria in spring and autumn were replaced by diatoms and cryptomonads. Filamentous cyanobacteria in summer were replaced by colony-forming unicellular Microcystis spp. It was remarkable that zooplankton biomass increased despite the decrease in phytoplankton biomass, and especially cladoceran zooplankton which increased drastically. These responses to the reduction of point source P loading to Lake Wangsong imply that reducing the point source P loading can have a big impact even when nonpoint sources account for a large fraction of the total annual phosphorus loading. Conclusions: Our results also show that the phytoplankton community can shift to decreased cyanobacterial dominance and the zooplankton community can shift to higher cladoceran dominance, even when phosphorus concentrations remain within the typical range for eutrophic lakes following the reduction of phosphorus loading.
The efficiencies of Gang-Byeon sewage treatment facilities, which are based on GPS-X modelling, were analysed and used to design recycle water treatment processes. The effluent of an aeration tank contained total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) of 1.8 mg/L with both C-1 and C-2 conditions, confirming that most ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3{^+}-N$) was converted to nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3{^-}-N$). The concentrations of $NH_3{^+}-N$ and $NO_3{^-}-N$ were found to be 222.5 and 227.2 mg/L, respectively, with C-1 conditions and 212.2 and 80.4 mg/L with C-2 conditions. Although C-2 conditions with higher organic matter yielded a slightly higher nitrogen removal efficiency, sufficient denitrification was not observed to meet the discharge standards. For the total nitrogen (T-N) removal efficiency, the final effluent concentrations of T-N were 293.8 mg/L with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of 2,500 mg/L, being about 1.5 times lower than that (445.3 mg/L) with BOD of 2,000 mg/L. Therefore, an external carbon source to increase the C/N ratio was required to get sufficient denitrification. During the winter period with temperature less than $10^{\circ}C$, the denitrification efficiency was dropped rapidly even with a high TKN concentration (1,500 mg/L). This indicates that unit reactors (anoxic/aerobic tanks) for winter need to be installed to increase the hydraulic retention time. Thus, to enhance nitrification and denitrification efficiencies, flexible operations with seasons are recommended for nitrification/anoxic/denitrification tanks.
In order to reclaim the effluent discharged from sewage treatment facilities application of an irradiation technique was investigated in this study for industrial water reuse. Samples were filtered using a sand filter to remove particles. Co-60 was used as an irradiation source and the irradiation dose was varied from 0.1 kGy to 15 kGy. The major source of colour in secondary treatment effluent was humic substances, which could be easily removed by irradiation with a dose 5 kGy. Bacteria could be also disinfected even at low doses. It was possible to get high quality water for industrial water reuse. But the effluent still contained a small amount of organic compounds. Further treatment, of residual organic compounds will be necessry if the higher quality water is required.
Taihu Lake is a major water source for part of Yangtze Delta, which is one of the most urbanized and economically prosperous areas in China. In last couple of decades, some parts of the lake were highly polluted due to eutrophication. This study analyzed dioxin-like potential and mutagenic potential in surface water samples from Taihu Lake. The samples were prepared by XAD-2 resin procedure. A batch of biological assays, including dioxin-like potential microassay with the rat hepatocyte cell line H411E, and Ames test was employed in the research. Results showed that jour water samples have high content of dioxin-like biological potential, the highest activity TEQ to 2,3,7,8-TCDD was 48 pg/ι in sample 1. The mutagenic effect with reading-frame shifting mechanism was confirmed in 3 of 4 samples. The effective sewage treatment facilities and reliable monitoring surveillance system are urgently needed for this area.

The purpose of this study is to identify the efficiency of LID technologies for controlling non-point source pollution from urban areas. The recent technical responses to managing water resource and urban areas according to the influence of climate change is an important national policy, along with green growth. Through various reference studies reasonable ways to consider a wholistic plan on urban-eco-friendly river management, the Low Impact Development (LID) as the adequate river management method is being undertaken in foreign countries to technically apply to urban plans. However, the LID is at the initial stage in Korea, with no specific studies implemented. Thus, this study explored whether LID technologies can be efficient measures to control non-point source pollution on the cost side. Ulsan's Namgu and Bukgu have been chosen as case studies that illustrate the efficiency of the LID technologies. On investigation, if LID technologies are designed properly, the efficiency of them is expected to higher than that of sewage treatment plant.
The purpose of this research was to suggest the water quality improvement in streams by evaluating the distribution characteristics of organics and ammonia nitrogen discharged by pollution sources from human living. The public sewage treatment plants'(PSTPs) effluents and the waters from streams in Gyeonggi-do were sampled and analyzed. Nitrogenous oxygen demand (NOD) was measured for the stream waters as well as the PSTPs effluents, and the correlations of NOD and $NH_3$-N, $NH_3$-N and water temperature in the PSTPs effluents were confirmed. In the case of the stream waters, the ratios of NOD to BOD and $NH_3$-N increased in the downstream sites after discharging the PSTPs effluents. As a result of statistical analysis of $NH_3$-N concentrations for the national water quality monitoring streams in Gyeonggi-do, $NH_3$-N showed the non-normal distribution which were biased to the left, but showed the considerable level because of higher coefficient of variation. Therefore, it is required to establish the water quality standard for the $NH_3$-N as a new parameter for judging the quality of the streams. In addition, inducing complete nitrification and introducing a logical standard setting system are needed to improve the water quality of streams by identifying distribution of the nitrogen components from PSTPs effluents.
This study intends to investigate the characteristics of the foul smell of sewer pipes near large apartment complexes as complaints about offensive odors have drastically increased in urban residential areas. Targeting apartments where people actually complained about foul orders, the study result revealed that components in the smell of the water-purifier tank of the target apartment were very similar to those of sewage treatment plants and night soil treatment plants. Measuring components of odors inside the management layer of tank showed that the concentration of hydrogen sulfide was 10ppm, which is approximately 160 times the safety standard of 0.06ppm; the concentration of mercaptan was 0.9ppm, which is about 220 times the safety standard of 0.004ppm. The source materials of foul odors were discharged outside through ducts, and those households living near outlets producing bad smell complain that it gets worse depending on the air pressure or wind direction and strength, and they could not even open windows. As well, these source materials were transferred by discharge pumps to public sewer pipes outside the apartment complex. While discharge pumps starts operating, they remain on the sewer pipe and then begin to spread over to roads through small openings of manholes on the road. Then, the smell offends passers-by and residents near the road, leading to a lot of complaints. The study results suggest that, among the sources of foul odors in sewer pipes of residential areas, especially those from the water-purifier tank of large apartments, hydrogen sulfide should be the main target for follow-up treatment.
The sewage and wastewater (SAW) are a well-known major source of eutrophication and greentide in freshwaters and also a potential source of thermal pollution; however, there were few approaches to thermal effluent of SAW in Korea. This study was performed to understand the behavioral dynamics of the thermal effluents and their effects on the water quality of the connected streams during winter season, considering domestic sewage, industrial wastewater and hot spring wastewater from December 2015 to February 2016. Sampling stations were selected the upstream, the outlet of SAW, and the downstream in each connected stream, and the water temperature change was monitored toward the downstream from the discharging point of SAW. The temperature effect and its range of SAW on the stream were dependent not only on the effluent temperature and quantity but also on the local air temperature, water temperature and stream discharge. The SAW effects on the stream water temperature were observed with temperature increase by $2.1{\sim}5.8^{\circ}C$ in the range of 1.0 to 5.5 km downstream. Temperature effect was the greatest in the hot spring wastewater despite of small amount of effluent. The SAW was not only related to temperature but also to the increase of organic matter and nutrients in the connected stream. The industrial wastewater effluent was discharged with high concentration of nitrogen, while the hot spring wastewater was high in both phosphorus and nitrogen. The difference between these cases was due to with and without chemical T-P treatment in the industrial and the hot spring wastewater, respectively. The chlorophyll-a content of the attached algae was high at the outlet of SAW and the downstream reach, mostly in eutrophic level. These ecological results were presumably due to the high water temperature and phosphorus concentration in the stream brought by the thermal effluents of SAW. These results suggest that high temperature of the SAW needs to be emphasized when evaluating its effects on the stream water quality (water temperature, fertility) through a systematized spatial and temporal investigation.
