  • In order to determine the message that is communicated to students about people who use math, this study analyzes contexts, human presence in particular, used in problems presented in a U. S. high school mathematics textbook. A framework was developed to analyze the human presence and was used to determine both the degree to which humans are present in the curriculum as well as characteristics of the present humans. One outcome of this study is the framework itself which can be used to analyze the human presence in any mathematics curriculum. Other outcomes include the determination that the particular mathematics textbook under study contains an overwhelming lack of humans, a surprising lack of named humans, and a disappointing presence of humans in math-related careers. These findings raise concerning questions about the message that is communicated to students about the usefulness of school mathematics and missing a valuable opportunity to inspire students to pursue degrees in mathematics. Additionally, it is hoped that these findings would inform the work of the Korean mathematics education communities on the textbook development.

  • Objectives: A content analysis was conducted to examine whether the current school textbooks providing smoking information are effective or not. Methods: The authors reviewed 111 qualified textbooks using elementary through high schools during 2006-2007 academic year in Korea. Educational components were coded with an analysis tool developed through the present research. Result: Tobacco education components were narrowly focused on long-term physiological consequences of tobacco use, addictiveness, and harmful ingredients and they were repetitively shown in the textbooks. Negative health consequences such as lung cancer were emphasized 10 times among 12 smoking-related textbooks. Educational messages or contents are mainly based on medical knowledge (72%) rather than psycho-social components. The US school-based smoking prevention programs, however, employ psycho-social approach with cognitive and life-skill components and they contain only 7-17% of smoking-related medical knowledge. In order to increase psycho-social smoking prevention components in Korean textbooks, the present study identified social subjects of textbooks (and relating core sessions) for elementary, middle, and high school. It also provided guidelines for school instructors to use. Conclusion: Adolescent smoking behavior is not caused by the deficit of health information, but mostly by social influences including media and peer pressure. School textbooks proving smoking information need to increase psycho-social context. One of the most effective ways as a psycho-social smoking prevention program is to use social subjects (or curriculum) of textbooks such as social studies, ethics, social cultures, social environment, and home management.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the seventh curriculum textbooks and teacher's guides of high school science courses in relation to the generation (mechanism) of magma in subduction boundary and find the incorrect descriptions of the texts and the figures (illustrations) and then suggest some improved schemes. According to the result there are many discrepancies in definition of 'magma' among the textbooks and further little scientific explanations about the formation mechanism of magma in most textbooks, and even no descriptions about that. In addition, the figures are inconsistent with the description of the text and also have some incorrect depiction which might contribute to the forming and reinforcing misconceptions about Plate Tectonics as well as a volcanic activity in subduction boundary. On the basis of the previous researches, therefore, some improved schemes (text descriptions and figures) are suggested. The results of this study should be used as a reference for publishing science textbook, developing science curriculum, and teaching effectively in the high school.

  • The study analyzed 343 government-authorized and officially approved textbooks of the Seventh Curriculum's specialized subjects in high school from March to September, 2007. The textbooks were categorized into the area of agriculture, industry, commerce, household and business, science, foreign languages and physical exercise and analyzed in terms of the target and content areas of marine education. And the findings were as follows: First, among the textbooks in the seven groups serving as the focus of this study, 19.8% have oceanic-related information but pages including ocean contents occupy only 0.8%. Consequently ocean-related contents are scarcely included. The ocean-related contents are necessary to be treated goals. Second, the goals of school oceanic education are focused in vocational subjects. In order of commonality, information & knowledge are most frequent, then functionality, followed by activity & participation. There was no education provided focusing on value & attitude. Given that school oceanic educations were selected for promoting the importance of the ocean and highlighting the problems of the ocean, the lack of information & knowledge is of concern. The goals of oceanic education should be augmented to actively and positively participate in the solutions of the problems with knowledge, ocean-friendly value & attitude, and increased activity & participation. Third, the contents of school oceanic education commonly focuses on the relationships of oceans and humans, oceans and ecology, and artificial oceanic environments and facilities. Less common but still introduced are ocean resources, sea pollution, sea preservation and measures. Yet, in contrast there is a lack of education in the ethics of sea preservation.

  • This study analyzed in what ways the instructional materials have been dealing with the fraction as quotient, since the seventh national mathematics curriculum. An analysis of this study urged us to re-consider the content related to the fraction as quotient. First, the fraction as quotient has weakened in the current mathematics textbooks and workbooks in comparison to those developed under the previous curriculum. Second, the contexts of whole number division taught in grades 3 and 4 were not naturally connected to those of the fraction as quotient taught in grade 5. Third, the types of word problems, visual models, and partitioning strategies in the textbooks and the workbooks were partial, and the process of formalization was limited. Building on these results, this study is expected to suggest specific implications which may be taken into account in developing new instructional materials in process.

  • In this paper an attempt was made to establish a direction in systematizing the technical education with regard to the relation to environmental education. This study was made mainly through literature review concerning the relationship between technology and environment, and thus this study has a purpose of connecting the contents of technical education with environmental education. It will provide referential data for environmental education. The main text of this study dealt with which goal to establish in the technical education from the viewpoint of academical position considering the relationship between technical education and environmental education. Also, it dealt with the organization of contents of environmental education according to the 7th curriculum and, as a result, it reached the following conclusions: In the first place, technology and environmental education which have close relationship with each other should be considered in the developmental aspect. In the second place, technology, in any directions, affects natural environment. In the third place, environmental education should be done by the integrated approach and one of the alternatives can be through SET education including society and culture, environment, and technology all together. In the fouth place, the environmental education should be environmentally sound and developed sustainably so that the technology can be developed along with environment. One example can be found in the ecological architecture. In the fifth place, the environmental education which is a souce of technical education has its necessity in 8 aspects. In the sixth place, according to the 7th curriculum, the following can be the teaching contents which will connect technical education and environmental education: gardening, vegetable raising, planting and trimming, the future techniques, energy and transportation techniques, and so on. In the seventh place, the technical education can have seven goals concerning environment. In the eighth place, the environmental education in the technical education should be considered in the aspect of contents, of teaching and learning, of evaluation, and of the relations with subjects. In the ninth place, should be included as teaching materials of the units of technology textbooks where environment education will be dealt with.

  • Environmental education as worldwide sustainable education is effective when it is carried out as early as possible. But we do not have any aims and textbooks for environmental education in the elementary school. The purpose of this study is systematizing environmental syllabus as sustainable education. To achieve this purpose, firstly, the meaning of environmental education as sustainable education was conceptualized, secondly, the aims of environmental education was set up, thirdly, domains of environmental education was revised, and lastly, the syllabus for environmental instruction were created for each grade. Literature review was practiced over 143 textbooks and teacher's guidebooks from the 4th to 7th curriculum period. The result of this study follows. First, environmental education as sustainable education in the elementary school was conceptualized as an integrative education to keep the lifelong education and welfare. Second, the synthetic aim of environmental education as sustainable education in the elementary school was set up as 'cultivating desirable environmental people that behave for the sustainable future with environment-friendly value and attitude. Third, our environmental domains were divided into 11-12 independent areas, and ESSD (Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development) was located on the subcategory of environmental domain. These domains were revised into three environmental domains and five sub-domains. Fourth, according to the aims of environmental education as sustainable education and five environmental domains, 253 objectives were established. Fifth, objectives of environmental education of 10 subject matters and integrative objectives were presented. Sixth, based on the objectives of domains and subject matters, 255 contents for environmental education in the elementary school were abstracted and distributed to each grade in the consideration of balance among domains and appropriateness of grades. Seventh, analytic results of textbooks of 7th curriculum shows heavy stress on the 'knowledge perception' section and deficiency on the altitudes and behavior section. The environment-related level and contents overlapped and fragmented deeply. Furthermore, 33 parts of textbooks could bring to mis-concept on environment.
